Yes, I think it's abusive. Brachycephalic animals have immeasurably more health issues than non-brachy animals, not only dogs but also cats and rabbits.
Pugs, bulldogs, Boston terriers, Pekingese, all are prone to breathing problems. (I have literally never known a pug in my life that didn't develop serious health problems.) So are brachycephalic cats like Persians, Himalayans, and Exotic shorthairs, which also tend to have tear duct problems because their squished faces cause malformed tear ducts. Tear duct issues also exist in brachycephalic rabbit breeds like the Netherland dwarf, Lionhead, and Holland lop; which are increasingly bred for shorter and shorter faces because people think it's cute. A brachycephalic head is especially harmful to rabbits, because their teeth grow continuously throughout their lives, and their incisors have to line up perfectly in order to be naturally worn down. A brachy head means the lower jaw is longer than the upper jaw, and their teeth frequently become misaligned. Some even have to have their incisors removed. And all because we think short faces are soooo cute.
It may be an unpopular opinion, especially to people who own one of the breeds I'm talking about, but I personally think animals intentionally bred to be brachycephalic should go the way of the dodo bird. In my opinion, it's animal abuse for purely aesthetic reasons.
A campaign was done a few years ago by a united force of dog, cat, and rabbit welfare groups, and as part of it they compared profiles of brachy breeds with more natural, non-brachy breeds, and the results were pretty startling, as well as disturbing:...pls adopt street dogs don't shop dogs
