Wow, I'm amazed that you re-listed some of your MLP content, it's been forever since I've seen any of these.
I took a long break from watching your channel (and anime in general) a few years ago, and don't know too much about what you've been doing lately (just found out you took down a bunch of your videos, like, 10 minutes ago.)
Either way, I'm glad to see you've been growing into a happier person lately (as far as I can tell).
Good luck with everything you are aiming to do, Beatrice!!!

Honestly, Digi, I hope that the comics are NOT canon. The existence of the Nightmare forces as a Venom-esque outside force that takes control of a pony and makes them an evil version of themselves with no control of their own actions, then the arc of Luna's fall, Redemption, and Subsequent Character growth are made Narratively pointless. I prefer to think that the pent up anger and rage in Luna's heart built up and interacted with her magic, causing the unstable power that Luna had been building up to erupt and form Nightmare Moon, which- even after being purified by the Elements of harmony- still exists within Princess Luna, but is now balanced by the love and friendship that the ponies demonstrated for her.

I was hoping for either Digibrony or Bronycurious to make a video on this. But it looks as if they do not even see the problem.
The second arc gave us Nightmare Moon without Luna and Luna without Nightmare Moon, i.e. a sub-Chrysalis and a sub-Cadance. If that happened in the show, it would ruin the character for me.

    • @Trueknightofblades
      @Trueknightofblades 10 лет назад +4

      *****
Indeed. That is my thought exactly. In my view Nightmare Moon is simply the Darker side of Luna's personality given form by her magic and then allowed to overwhelm her. The Power of the Elements essentially countered the magic, by showing Luna what friendship was. This allowed her own nature to reassert itself, but that darkness, that pain is still there, it is a part of her, and it always will be. It just is not in control anymore.
Of course, one part of the main series comics Non-cannon means making the entire thing Non-cannon, and honestly, I am okay with that. It makes it so that events similar, though not exactly the same as the Chrysalis saga to happen in the Show, since Twilight in the comics does seem to lack wings.

      Skye Silverwing
Back in S1, I think I was a lot more open to the common fanfic idea of "the Nightmare" as a separate entity able to jump hosts. NmM and "Woona" were so different from each other that it made sense. But then came Eclipsed, an episode that took the two previous designs and portrayals and merged them into a new coherent whole. It even ended with Luna accepting to be Nightmare Moon for the holiday. And it was glorious! There is no way I would let all that go so easily.
In issues #5-6 of the main comic series, the way the nightmare forces were described made them look similar to the dark side in Star Wars. And I was completely okay with that. But then she talked and she explained how she had been defeated by the elements before but could no longer be now that she had taken over Rarity. They might as well have revealed that Anakin had been possessed by the ghost of an ancient Sith and that Vader was now in Lando's body.
The worst part is that it might actually have been Lauren Faust's original concept.
Now, regarding Twilight's wings, she will have them from issue #13 onward. The comics are catching up with the show.

    • @jedimasterpickle3
      @jedimasterpickle3 10 лет назад +2

Well, the Nightmare seems to feed off of its hosts insecurities and negative aspects of themselves i.e Luna's jealousy and Rarity's need to feel important. The Nightmare is everything you said, except the forces come from an external source, with Luna welcoming the Nightmare into her body so she wouldn't feel like the lesser sister. Does that make Luna possessed? Yes but willingly at first. The Nightmare did not force its way into Luna. She wanted it, and it came, and so Nightmare Moon was born

      *****
If you allow me, I would point out two problems with this argument:
      1) We see the whole process at work on Rarity. All it takes is one moment of fear and confusion for the Nightmare to take full control. There is no real consent.
      2) This is the same world in which another monster queen can use your love to feed on and control you.

Amazon has full arcs in single books (I've got nightmarity, chrysalis, and the mane 6 micro so far) which are significantly cheaper than buying them issue by issue. Mail delivery also sends them in an unmarked box, so that's neat.

I only read up through the 4 arcs and Twilight's and Rainbow's.
Though I wouldn't know of the artists so to speak, I did enjoy those comics much more than some of the show. They did a magnificent job on the main arcs of the story and found both humorous and edgy at the same time. Nothing ever really slowed down for me when reading them, adding just enough spice in each part to keep me interested and hooked.

Aside from the fact that the stories and artwork are always perfect, one of my favorite parts about these comics is all the little things in the background. You can read the same comic four times and still discover something new each time you do.
There are cameos everywhere, they pretty much canonized that Doctor Whooves is actually THE Doctor, if you pay close attention to the background in the latest arc you'll find out who wrote the Daring Do books, and there is a plethora of older gen ponies slipped in there for the fans who grew up on the old series.
These comics really are a must-read for all MLP fans, and I'm really glad to see you read them as well, Digi.

Well after I read the *Nightmare* story arc(like several times because I liked it so much), I did a lot of thinking and came to a realization, the very thing that made Luna become Nightmare Moon in the first place, is actually very similar to how Spider-Man's Eddie Brock(or who ever depending on the incarnation) became Venom, these "Nightmare Forces" as they are called, are actually similar to the *Marvel Comics' Symbiotes*, but instead of being slime-like blobs, they're ghost-like clouds of smoke, like the Symbiotes they require hosts in order to be at their true power, and they are able to grant their hosts great powers, but at the cost of consuming both their minds & bodies, turning them into monsters that are only focused on their host's most negative emotions, and since they are creatures of *Dark Power* the Nightmare Forces are vulnerable to bright lights & the power of positive emotions(similar to how the Symbiotes are weak against intense heat & loud sounds), so their ultimate goal is to bring forth the eternal so that they could thrive in non-stop darkness, and similar to how the Venom Symbiote retained all of the memories of Peter Parker when it bonded with Eddie Brock, Nightmare Rarity retained the personality of Nightmare Moon even though it was no longer bonded to Luna, plus the ponies keep mentioning that the Nightmare Forces possess something called the "Nightmare Energy", which apparently is the name of the form of Magic they wield, which allows them to trap anyone in a coma & make them live their worst nightmares and/or most tempting dreams forever, over all after analyzing both the show's episodes & the comics' story arc issues, I realized that they do have a lot of similarities to the *Marvel Symbiotes* which may explain why I like that story arc so much, but hey that's just how *I* see it, so whatever.

They can be found on places like Ebay and there are a few online indie shops like CC comics that also sell the physical copies if you prefer holding the real thing in your hands. Me, I get most of mine ordered on Ebay the day they come out. This can be more expensive than getting the digital copies, of course, but it really depends on your preference as a collector/pony fan.

I mean sure they're probably good and they might even be better then the show. But i never found any love for this type of media. I can't put my finger on why i never touched Comics, but i don't like reading them.

      @CrimsonCreed603 10 лет назад

TheRealVastile Also be warned even the good ones such as Chrysalis and the sorts have some people that didn't enjoy it due to rehashes and the sorts (I don't want to spoil something but the mane 6 get the idiot ball and forget for some time they are fighting changelings). Along with that, the Chrysalis and Nightmare ones have some lore breakers and logic rippers that don't fit in the show and have some inconsitencies. They also will use internet jokes and memes that can be sometimes grating. Finally, the Twilight one isn't bad per say but kinda scraped by with an okay plot and is generally considered one of the worst in terms of art style. RD is disliked for caricature nature and contradicting important plot points. Fluttershy's seems to be generally considered the worst and AJ's isn't praised. Bar the EQG and the rest, the general consensus of the others seems positive if a bit critical of the flaws that exist (and whilst I enjoyed them they were a bit huh even to me)

Thanks to your hidden description secrets, I literally just finished reading the first issue and then came back to finish the video, while avoiding the minefield. Let me tell everyone now: First of all, thoroughly look over that description. Secondly, the comics caught me on the first speech bubble. As I was reading, it became obvious that these comics were targeted at the brony community. Which lines up, as they seem to take place after the royal wedding. The humor and story telling, while still appropriate for a younger audience, are much more adult. It's obvious that these comics were written to appease an audience of teens and up. It reminded me of some of the Spider-Man comics I read when I was a kid. While there was nothing in them that should stop a kid from reading them, I was still able to enjoy them years later. And as a kid who has always gotten adult topics far ahead of his peers, I understood those aspects as well. So not only are these comics sedating my pony withdraw since the Legends of Equestria servers went down, but they're giving me an unexpected nostalgia trip. Even the art style is very much like the older comics I read, but with a comedic twist. Couple that with blatant fan service and humor that would only get people above fourteen laughing (and I'm being merciful with that), you've got yourself a fine example of comic books in general. Screw the fact that it's about MLP. Honestly nothing about these felt like they had the stigma attached to them like the show does. They're just solid comics, that you can only recognize as MLP thanks to the title and superb handling of the world and characters.

Thanks Digi, I've ways wondered about the comics. Sadly comics are just not my thing and it seems like they don't expand the shows canon, or at least not in the way I'd be looking for. It be so great to have an official source of deep canon and backstory that deals with topics the show has brought up, but never really dealt with fully. However, I was pleased to read that the people behind the comics are fully behind Princess Twilight.

I love the comics, heck the first one I bought was the hardback that combined all of arc 1, even got Andrea Libman to autograph it! The comic is a worthwhile investment. With art and humor that I kind of enjoyed a bit more the then the show, also it has more Luna and you can't go wrong with that.

Oh, I want to read the comics, I just don't know of any comic shops anywhere near where I live. Several grocery stores and Walmart sell comics, but not MLP, so I have to wait for Amazon to get the TPBs, which I prefer as they're easier to keep track of, and buy them. I have the first volume and love it.

Well, I'm certainly enjoying the comics so far. I've been following them dutifully since issue three or so and it has made the wait for season 4 far more bearable. The main arcs are, of course, fantastic, and while I do find the micro series much more hit and miss, I find it hard to call any of them outright terrible, just kinda... meh on the low end of the scale. But when the micros end, I will be VERY interested to see how the new 'friends forever' line takes over, since those comics will be focusing on pairing up specific characters for a story, rather than focusing on a single pony. I have the annual ordered, but it hasn't come yet, and as someone who also enjoyed EQG (though I am fully aware of its flaws) I am very interested to see some more background with Sunset and the Humane five. Excellent work as always, Digi, can't wait to see some of the content that will be coming out with Season 4.

I'm of two minds about the comics, myself. I can't deny that they're objectively very good, and I liked both of the Micros that I managed to get a look at, but... The arc stories rub me the wrong way. Much like Flutterhulk, it just doesn't do anything for me, though I'm at a loss to explain WHY I didn't like it. That in turn is rather frustrating...

However, I will admit I've only read the Chrysalis arc and one issue of the Nightmare Rarity arc, so maybe some of the others are better?

Wait, there's actually a school that exist in the Equestria? That actually surprised me the most. Well, I wasn't exactly paying attention at the time, but is it the same Magic school that Twilight originally tried to get into in the Cutie Mark Chronicles?

With the nearest store I could buy the comics in being MANY miles away from me, lacking gear to read it without everything being blurry and lacking the money to buy them, there is no large surprise that I have not read them. I get a little frustrated about it.

I found it extremely odd how Babs Seed is older than Applejack in the EQG comic, but the same age as the CMC in the show. I also find it odd that Twilight in the EQG comic is pre-faithful student and Sunset is a freshman, but Twilight and Sunset are both seniors in the EQG movie. The explanation for that I can come up with is that time moves faster in MLP than in EQG.

I really liked the Twilight micro. I really the author's art style. I've read his other works. The Rarity Mightmare arc was my favorite too. (though her armor clashed)
The comics in general are either a success or a miss. It's interesting to see the show in different art styles and writers. You don't have to read them in order to enjoy the show. They don't give you more depth into the world. They feel more like fun official fanfics.
    I can't wait for Luna's micro.

So with Daring Don't being what it is how does that gel with the Shining Armor comic or specifically the background Easter egg about Twilight Velvet writing Daring Do? Or is it possible that it is more a matter of Twilight Velvet writing AN award winning Daring Do novel but not being the original writer of the series?

I was wondering if there was any connection between the nightmare dreamscape creatures from that Nightmare comics and the fallowing villains from the series
Discord, King Sombra, Trixie, Queen Chrysalis, and maybe even Gilda
the reason for me asking this is because of how the Nightmare Dreamscape creatures affect others according to their fear of being alone

according to hasbro, the comic writers, and the show writers everything from the comics is canon to the show. So yes, there most likely is.

I fail to see how the Nightmare Rarity arc could possibly be considered canon. There was an overwhelmingly large number of entirely overlooked show-canon progression points used to make Rarity fit and fall into the Nightmare role, as well as a number of later comments, actions and lines that completely overshoot points of her characterization.

  • @thewalrus45

I like most of the comics, cept some and the Micros and the Nightmare Rarity arc which characterizes Luna so so so badly to the point where she feels more like stupid fanon around her than she does in any actual episode or even the other comics and I dislike the Nightmare Forces as a concept.

My personal opinions on the comics:
Chrysalis arc- Awesome, hilarious, but a bit of a letdown finale. 4 stars
Nightmare arc- Awesome, dramatic, and with an awesome finale, but a slightly lacking middle. 5 stars
Big Mac arc- Hilarious and heartwarming, especially with all the mares who seem to have a thing for Big Mac!. 5 stars
Shining Armour/Cadance arc- Hilarious, nice backstory, finally gives Shiny and Cadance some personality, and a tonne of geek humour (Katie Cook displays alot of geek-cred here, she clearly knows her RPG gaming.) 5 stars
Twilight Sparkle Micro- Odd art style, a bit dull but kinda heartwarming and lots of neat literature puns. 3.5 stars
Rainbow micro- A bit oddly written, I agree, and the story is a bit simplistic, but ultimately alright with a nice art style. 3 stars
Rarity micro- Brilliance from start to finish. Lots of hippie-humour and great artwork. 5 stars
Pinkie Micro- Adorable and just leaves you with a good feeling, as well as an awesome art style that rivals Andy Price's. 5 stars
Fluttershy Micro- Artwork is decent, but otherwise, honestly kinda lacking. I'm not sure what it was but something about it just didn't really click with me. 3 stars.
Applejack Micro- A bit of a bland art style, but otherwise pretty funny. 4 stars.
CMC Micro- Art style take some getting used to, but otherwise pretty funny stuff, though the conflict seems a bit lacking. But then it makes an MST3K joke and it regains a point. 4 stars.
Celestia Micro- Very funny, great artwork, lots of Harry Potter jokes (And a cameo by Gordon Ramsay of all ponies!) and a decent heartwarming story. And yes, the ending does seem a little sobering and a little hard-hitting if you think about it too hard. 5 stars.
Spike Micro- Neat art style, and a very interesting concept (Spike creates a society of amphibious, overgrown Sea-Monkeys and gives them intelligence, just say that out loud to yourself!), but the conflict is kinda lacking and it is kinda bland. 3 stars.
EqG Annual- Incredible backstory for Sunset Shimmer with great artwork and a really rather dark storyline. And for the rest, a very unique art style that takes a bit of getting used to, but otherwise a very engaging little backstory.
All in all, it may have a few hiccups in terms of artwork and stories, but hey, every comic series has that. I highly recommend getting the MLP comics!

Arc 1: A great start and gives Chrsalys more character unlike how the episode they introduce her.
Arc 2: In my my honest opinion it has the best story I have seen and it just blows me away.
Arc 3: A character I love and now even more and the best part it fixed what Hearts and hooves did. Thank you Meghan for ruining him having any chance to have character in the show. Unless season 4 comes ins and disprove it.
Arc 4: You know when EG is horrible when the writers of the comic tells a better highschool story than that piece of garbage But has one big issue. If twilight knew that Candance has a crush on his brother, Why is it so surprising to her? The only explanation I can think of is that she doesn't knew her full name.
Micros: So far its a mix bag for everybody as its hit or miss. I do like all of them in their own rights but ya there do have problems.
EG comic: It really shows a lot and I love it but trying to connect to EG is really hard to do do to how terrible the movie was. But at least they tried unlike the writer who never had cared for EG.

thats for the EG overview. I was not putting down 8 bucks for one comic. Sure one episode of the show is only 2 bucks but it starts to get stupid when I can buy 4 episodes of an hour long show or of MLP for it.
