I started Junior Roller Derby last October and I've loved every second. I take my skills test this month so I can be an official Derby Girl! Can't wait. Love this sport.
I'm a female captain of a men's team. Men's Roller derby is played differently. Men are very shoulder hit heavy while women tend towards the full body or hip check. Men skate backwards more frequently and give out the cross shoulder hits. Both are worth watching, honestly.
It is absolutely different strategies because of different body types and even skating style. I find it most fascinating to see co-ed games where both women and men need to adapt their hitting styles based on their target!
@@Boc3phu5 I would not say that! Hip checks are going to be more effective at moving and controlling your opponent. Shoulder heavy hits are easier to avoid by shifting your weight away from the hit but hip hits can sweep you off your feet!
Sure. Along with the camaraderie and athleticism, I believe there is a certain "feeling" that comes with falling in love with derby that is the hardest to portray. It's an evolving sport and many parts of the documentary are already outdated despite only being a few years old (namely, that men's derby is becoming more popular) but I think the family aspect and the feeling that derby saved your soul is something that will always be relevant. Thanks for your message!
Its fascinating to see the rise, brick by brick, of a new sport. Emerging and being captured in this kind o doc its pure gold. Keep the footage going and keep the great work on what you all realy love!
I've already posted the link to the documentary. Being in my 60s with physical challenges, I go to as many of the Free State Roller Derby bouts that are at home as I can. The women I have met who participate in this sport, whether they are one of the home teams or a visiting team, all seem happy to have people come out and watch them. Even the few I have spoken with who are on guest teams seem to have real sportsmanship! In addition to supporting the local team, that is one of the reasons I like to watch. Regarding the sportsmanship, you are like the contestants on American Ninja Warrior! I can't think of a better compliment to give to the women I have met in this sport!
Aaaah you just made me miss roller derby so much more. Life pushes skaters OOB temporarily, but hopefully some of us will re-enter some lovely day. Thank you for a great documentary. So much has changed in this sport, can't believe it's only been 4 years since this was published.
+Laura Lopez Bueno It really has changed so much! It's crazy watching games from just a few years ago and men's teams are becoming more prevalent! Someone commented on champs 2012 and asked why skaters were taking a knee... Oh roller derby!
Hehe, ah, the knee. Rather the event when it was first seen. I don't know many skaters who were keen on it, really. One of derby's surprising moments. :) Yes, it's interesting to see men's teams getting established and doing so well.
Great job covering the most important elements of roller derby-- skill, work, and community. It looks like DRD are doing a top-notch job at preparing SKATERS before throwing them into full-contact derby, which is totally important. It ain't all about tattoos and bein' badass, its about learning together...and then hitting the crap out of each other. Get it Phan clan! derby
Yvonne, your documentary was great. Congrats on your roller derby success. I've been skating with a Rec-League for about a year and I can't wait to try out for a league eventually. Everything you've said, are the immediate reactions I go through in roller derby. -Sailor Doom!
@@spottay212 Yeah! Have you seen that music video? A real pump up song for roller derby. I was a kid back in the 80s when I 1st saw a rollee derby on TV, and that was the 1st sport that I saw women participate in and I was blown away! And at a young age I already knew that girls can do what boys can do!
Love how this is edited and put together. I watched this a few months back and just started basic training. Thanks for helping to get me ready for the journey, Yvonne. :)
Pretty cool! Most of all, I think it's very validating. I worked really hard, got there, and was just rostered for regular rotation for my first game rather than just being an alternate or bench-warmer. To think I'm "good enough" feels so good. The new challenges are exciting. I like working with charter at practices instead of B and C teams. It's easy to get caught up helping newer skaters rather than honing your own skills. It's a very rewarding thing to do also, but I'm ready for something different, you know? :)
I'm loving this video! I love Derby! There was a team to form here locally (I live in Kentucky) and I was to be ref for them. They did a few practices but the team ended before it began. I hope to one day actually see some derby action! Much love friends!
Thank you! It was mostly difficult to coordinate schedules with interviewing people, that was probably the hardest part. I also didn't have a good lighting source so I often tried to work with outdoor interviews to get natural lighting to help me. I had hours and hours of footage, which was a gift but also a curse in a way. Thankfully, because I loved everything about this documentary, it was easy to stay in focus and not get tired of watching the footage!
I'd no idea about this sport..I'm latin.. U cannot see so much about this in my country but this is AMAZING srslly if I were able to make it here would be a dream.. CONGRATS GURLS! this so cool!! xx Grom Colombia Keep on doing it and givin' the B E S T!
You are absolutely cool. I hope you have a long and victorious derby career with DRD. I'm a starting out this season as a rookie NSO down here in SoCal and I feel the same way about being part of this derby community we've found.
Badass and totally inspiring! Im in the middle of basic training for my local team on the other side of the pond. Great to hear about your experiences!
I'm about to attend my fourth session. This first one is hard, but the more you do it, the easier it becomes. I even practice in my kitchen just to improve my balance. I'm hooked!
Oh my goodness, right? It was recently my *14 year* tryout anniversary on 4/20. It’s changed so much. My years playing with amazing athletes will always hold a special place in my heart.
I think that the Roller Derby girls SHOULD get paid. They work hard, some of them get hurt, they have to work as a team, and it's an AMAZING sport for girls. I think I want to play when I grow up. :)
Amazing video! Finaly one I can give people, when they ask me " what is roller derby? Where are the ball? " etc.. And now even Norway has gotten Roller Derby! :D
Love the short film you did. Music choice is awesome. Sound is clear and video is really good to. Do want to chime in on something though. I noticed a part where someone said men wouldn't see a point to devoting this much time into something for the shear fun of it. Well we do. there are 20 MRDA teams now and championships are going to be in St Louis in October!
I am going to have to agree, I coach the Morgantown Roller Vixens, and as a man it is difficult to deal with so many women. But I too am a glutton for punishment and I love this sport too much to let that get in my way!!
There's no coincidence that the Best Attendance award almost always accompanies the Most Improved award every year... always practice if you want to get better!
I liked this until it started talking about men not skating... We work closely with a men's league and the are amazing and we push each other to become a better, stronger team.
Jackie McCloughan I'm not Yvonne, so I can't speak for her. But I am her sister, so I'm going to try! The parts in the documentary that talk about derby being a female-dominated sport aren't meant to be a snub toward any men (or transgender or genderless people). I think she just wanted to address part of what drew her--and many others--to roller derby, which is that it was very much all about the ladies, good sportswomanship, the dedication, etc. Please keep in mind, also, that this documentary was made over four years ago. Since then, many strides have been made to make the sport more inclusive. Leagues have changed their gender policies to include more than just those who identify as female. Some leagues have even changed their names--for example, the Denver Roller Dolls are now known as Denver Roller Derby, and their affiliate men's league (Ground Control) is great! I guess what I'm trying to say is: Yvonne loving women's roller derby doesn't mean she is against men's derby. But of course you are absolutely welcome to like or dislike this documentary, that is your choice. I just wanted to make that first part known.
I used to skateboard, but I was always super intrigued by roller derby girls because they seemed to have the same kind of chutzpah. Rad video. I hope I have a bout I can watch somewhere this summer. Very cute to infinity and yvonne:-)
Have you checked so see if there is any "junior derby" in your city? Go to a bout and ask one of the players or coaches and they'll hopefully tell you all you need to know. Good luck and derby rocks.
@sirAthrus Men's roller derby does exist but has not nearly caught on like women's roller derby. There are actually some clips in my documentary that feature a co-ed bout my league held!
It's not as scary as it looks! Sometimes it is. There are injuries. But, you have to remember that no one (at least, 99% of the time) is ever trying to hurt you.
It is, but with certain restrictions in place during the pandemic. Smaller events have been allowed to occur, such as an informal BIPOC tournament hosted by Denver this weekend! I actually skated in it and was reminded that I am no spring chicken anymore
i live in colorado too! :) im 15 and too young to play for a legit league yet (that i know of) but i got hooked last summer when i went to see the bionic banked track team they had... im pretty excited for it to start up again, and maybe play if i can find a good junior league, or a team that woud maybe take me?
There is just something to be said about the fact that modern flat track roller derby is dominated by females. Sometimes when it gets rough (physically and mentally), you can sometimes think, "Why am I doing this?" And anyone that has found roller derby knows it's because you've found something great, even if it takes all the work that it does.
See if a league nearby has a junior league! Most leagues have a minimum age requirement of 18, for legal and safety reasons. Our junior league age ranges from 6-17 years old!
madjack956 It’s a good question! The issue tends to be with cost to own one and transport one. Flat track is a lot more affordable and easier to transport if needed. Some leagues aren’t privileged to have a regular practice space so flat track also allows teams to take chalk or tape and draw up a track and play. The flat track style is governed by its own set of rules that are quite different than banked track!
I started Junior Roller Derby last October and I've loved every second. I take my skills test this month so I can be an official Derby Girl! Can't wait. Love this sport.
