Best explanation video I've seen on Roller Derby so far. Nice one guys :) I'll definitely be passing this on to all my family/friends/colleagues when they ask for an explanation!
70s-80's Roller Derby on American TV had fights, clotheslines and people thrown out over a rail. I was very young but remember it was a lot like wrestling. After this video, I now know how its supposed to be
so this is a good explanation of what this sport is. so thank you. it still seems brutally weird to me personally though. different strokes for different folks.
This is super helpful thank you, my gf wants to get into it so I sent her this as well. Methinks with a coordination disorder I will be best in a supportive crowd capacity haha
have you gone into the roller derby community yet? Im in the roller derby community since around July this year. I enjoy the sport a lot, I have a sprained ankle currently, but im going to my next practice and going to suck it up lol. Are you a junior?
@@brexpeep I have actually, and I enjoy it alot, since I already knew how to skate I just needed to learn something's and now I'm in minimal contact, it's a great sport, I must agree! And yes I'm a junior
@@rowancotter1045 it really fun! Of course, my place shut down cause of covid and the place we were in kicked us out but I can tell you that it's a lot of fun. You make friends and they encourage you a lot! It's really active and it really gets you excited, especially when you learn new things. You also go fast >:D which I like lmao
This is an awesome video! Unfortunately, though, the legal target zone is incorrect in Pippa's description. It is not knee and above, it is mid-thigh and above. The area between knee and mid-thigh is NOT a legal target zone.
no, not at all. People always think that, but actually males play the sport too. People think it wouldnt be fair, but thats why their is different rules put into play. Also if you go to a roller derby bout you will see all the refs in the center of the track, its to make sure the game is played fairly
I don't get it still lol. So they are getting blocked by their own team? And have to circle the track to repeatedly break through everyone? I thought it was like Nascar where they're just going round and round just knocking eachother off
Trust me, if you saw a live bout, people get sent to the hospital practically every game. Also, its even cooler if youre on the track swaying through the blockers, or blocking the jammer
Wrong! It starts with everyone going forward. It's a game of fluidity. This VERSION is lazy. You block going forward. Without that it's boring. No speed, no endurance,no excitement. It's a sissified version. There must be a bank track. It's must be coed. Alfa males and woman reaching a goal. That dynamic was exciting. Old school or go home. The reason this version is not catching on is for the reasons I mentioned. Get it together and stop trying to sell this watered down boring version. Play real Roller Derby I I'm just saying.

This was really helpful. I had no idea how roller derby was played beyond roller skates and circular track.

No it isn't. This is garbage.

This video really helped me since I may be going into roller derby!

Hi I'm thinking of starting once the places near me open back up for seasons after covid- is it fun? What is it like?

Just what I needed!!

Why would the lead jammer call it off? Idk
I like this compared to some of the others, because it's more of a "How to spectate" than "How to play"
nice one
Informative and hilarious!
how come all the roller derby videos i've seen are all women ? is it a women's sport exclusively ?
It is primarily a Women's sport, but men play too. Search for "mrda championships".

There is a junior team, men's teams, & co-ed teams
I'm gonna be in roller derby
Great vid Rosanna Scott !

One of the best video-explainations ever seen! Only question: why is a ref whistling the start of the jam? :p
they do that to start a jam, so the jammer knows when to go through the wall/pack (the blockers)
@@brexpeep In WFTDA rules, it's usually an NSO who starts the jam. In MADE and some other rulesets, a ref may blow the start whistle.
@@brexpeep their called jam timers they start off the game i'm a jam timer
Ya really cleared it up. Thanks! BTW, nice accent!! :)
This sounds so fun!
This seems pretty fun, not as violent as I thought it was o.o
Thank you :P
Best ever!
This looks like so much fun! Man I wish they had a dudes league!
They do! Mens roller derby leagues exist!
Hmm. Seems fun.
you know i thought it would be cooler...like that roller ball movie..

Basically you took out all of the things that are fun from the rules ....
Confusing af
