If anyone is interested, it was reported that playing in ares resulted in the lost of a PWM channel trying to play this demo. The team found that the header included the Mega CD identifier which is shouldn't have, and if you actually played this game on real hardware with a Mega CD also present you would end up with the same result. Which is pretty cool. It's fairly easy to find a tool to edit the ROM header to disable Mega CD if you want to run on ares, or a full hardware stack. It should be fixed going forward. Also, this is one hell of a port!
This is an incredible display of what the 32X could potentially have done. I tried this on my flash cart and while the framerate in this footage is better than what I got on a real 32X (especially in the last half of Greenflower 2 with that large open area) the fact that it even runs at all and is playable is a miracle. It'll be interesting to see this project's development though I think there will definitely have to be some level design concessions to keep a playable experience. One thing I would like to see is support for a WASD+mouse control layout like what Doom 32X Resurrection does with the Sega Mouse. That would be incredible.
Gave it go on the mister and god that was impressive. Just imagine if the 32x had launched with something like this. Between open lara, doom resurrection and now srb2 its oretty clear the 32x never came close to realizing its potential
This looks absolutely incredible! You probably know this already, but the current version of SRB2 on PC is one hell of a game. That is to say that I freaking love that game! I find the differences between the 32X and PC versions so fascinating, especially the level design for Greenflower Zone and Sonic's moveset.
@ 100% it’s another one of those “WTF were you thinking Sega!?” Decisions (or indecisions) they made so commonly around that time. Really would love to see them make a comeback and take on the big N again.
When I first played SRB2 years ago I always imagined this would fit perfectly on Saturn. Seeing this on 32X with the announcement trailer recently is even cooler! I hope they keep on porting the entirety of the game to it because that's the Sonic game people surely waited for way back in the day.
No one would have cared about that frame rate back in the day. There was hardly a word for it in the gaming press and the still images would have been irresistible! Looks great!
What is amazing is that the original SRB2 could hammer some even reasonable PC's simply due to the amount of moving elements in the levels. That they managed to get this on 32x, running at any speed and contained in the 256KB of RAM is down right amazing! That they are intending to do the rest of the game could make this THE Sonic game that 32x never got. One of the most amazing homebrew things I have seen in years. One additional note, you will see occasional flickers of single lines going from the top to the bottom of the screen, this is just a behavior of the Doom engine when there are joins that aren't resolved/connected properly. This turns up in all versions of the ray casting version of the Doom engine when level data isn't exact. This isn't the fault of the developers being lazy, it is just a neat quirk of the engine.
Despite being basically a Doom mod this would have been impressive back in the day. It's funny how it's more of a game than the one little snippet of 3D Sonic we were given on the Saturn.
It's easy to see from this why SEGA struggled so much getting Sonic into 3D. Hardware limitations considered, it really requires that paradigm shift that they couldn't manage, looking at Sonic R and the demos we do have of Sonic in 3D.
I think Frontiers is a pretty decent game (and the best open world Sonic), but there's a reason Generations is still considered the best 3D Sonic. Game just needs to be on rails/side scroller.
@@RyRyTheBassGuy Not played Frontiers but you have the hardware to work with there. I'd argue that it's only with the Dreamcast that you have the hardware grunt to bring Sonic alive in 3D while keeping the fast gameplay lively and intact. That's why I think we see Sonic R and Sonic Xtreme made they way they were, they are compromises for hardware limitations. Not played Sonic in 3D since Adventure 2... 😅
@@Idelacio Yeah, the DC had the hardware to make something decent, but I don't think they succeeded at all. It really did take until Generations for things to finally click. And then they f'd it up with Unleashed.

@@atemporalmusic6622 You got it all wrong, brother. My hate for the Dreamcast stems from the fact that Sega betrayed us, and it really has nothing to do with the technical capabilities of the machine. If the Dreamcast library were able to have another three years of software, then we would have seen some truly amazing games on the machine. But, as it currently stands, we are left with first-generation garbage, and that is the truth. I love Sega, but I hate how they handled the Dreamcast.
I feel like the collective trauma of not getting a 3D Sonic at the time makes everyone overly excited, including me. This looks like a great visual demo, but has there actually ever been a good 3D Sonic game?
Given that the original game uses GZDoom (IIRC), it would be interesting to see if the D32XR team might have some advice as far as optimizing the underlying engine goes.
Actually it uses Doom Legacy with extensive modifications including adding slopes and 3d models. Also adds hardware rendering with open gl. On the 32X the performance could be most likely be improved by cutting down the draw distance and reducing more details if possible.

Ooh interesting. Good info to know!
This would've blown people's minds back in the day before Saturn and PS1.
It was the 3D Sonic game we deserved back then
This would by itself probably make the 32x much more successful!
Would have def helped
Highly impressive, which means that a saturn version could even be more dope by using the different cpus and layers.
Yes I bet that’s the next step

Maybe in the future it could support mouse and keyboard
Really thankful to see the 32x receive some love here, it had the potential for powerful and gorgeous 2D games.
32x deserves way more love than it got back in the day
If they port Sonic Robo Blast Kart the 32x will have a better library than the PS5
Haha I dunno about that but I’d love to see it

Yes this is legit still just the tech demo stage
32X! Cool!
Fun Sega Xmas bonus
Will look forward to seeing how this pans out.
As a olde skool Sega fan the lack of a good 3D sonic on that gen always made me sad.

Luckily in 2024 it’s getting a decent amount. Hopefully 2025 is even better

even though this uses Ray Casting (Doom), I feel like it looks more 3D than Doom does. It might be due to the 3rd person perspective
