    In 2013 (after applying for 12 years) I drew a Black Hills, SD Archery Elk tag. Of course I was after a herd bull, but when a decent 5x5 satellite started walking straight toward me from 70 yds away, I was running everything thru my mind if he wasn't going to turn & give me a broadside shot.....picturing the anatomy that I had studied so hard, deciding how close he would have to get to me, if I was confident in myself & my bow enough, what angle I would need to shoot to get into the goods & not hit bone....well, he never turned at all. When he got to about 20 yds, he walked thru some low hanging mossy branches. I drew & held steady. I kept my top pin 8-10 inches above where dark & light hair meet, picturing where the arrow would travel inside him. He began staring me down a bit, but not stopping his long stride walk right at me. My husband was about 25-30 yds behind me, sitting among some heavy low hanging spruce branches, holding a 'Heads Up' cow decoy. The bull saw the decoy...would look at it, then back to me. Finally, at 12 yds, he stopped, drool falling from his mouth, nostrils flared, eyes wild. I took a shallow breath, & began to exhale slowly as I released the arrow. He spun to his right, blood squirting as he did. Then, immediately, he stumbled 3 side steps & fell with all 4 hooves reaching to the heavens!!! He didn't even make it 15 yds & was down! And in less than one minute from the time I released my arrow, he took his last breath with a half-hearted groan!! I was in shock!! As was my husband! He jumped up & down in excitement more than me & couldn't believe his wife killed an elk with her bow!! We just stood there together, staring at this huge animal...in disbelief of what just happened! When I opened his body cavity up, my arrow was situated completely inside the bull...the lighted nock glowing near his heart & the broadhead up above his you know what!! The top arteries of the heart were severed off. And the blood loss was impressive! Frontal shots are not for everybody, but if you've researched this scenario & are confident, it's a deadly quick kill shot!!

    Hey guys I am from New York and went to Idaho on my first ever elk hunt last year and thanks to watching your guys videos I was totally confident in the frontal shot. I was able to take a spike bull at 18 yards with a frontal quarter to and had a pass thru out behind the shoulder on the opposyside. The elk only went 10 yards and fell into a heap. I love what you guys are doing and have inspired me to travel out west now. Also I ordered the kill pack of calls and wow awesome calls. Thank you again and hope to run into you guys some day.

    I just made this shot on a bull 2 days ago. Idaho hunt.. an hour from pocatello. Rained all day and hailed really bad for half of the day. 15 yards.. exactly like your explanation of the pocket. Blood trail was literally puddles of bright red with bubbles. Expected lung shot. He bled like this for 300 yards. 1.5 miles later the blood was decent still.. found the arrow. Had a big chunk of a membrane of some sort on the broadhead. It penetrated 20 inches. At mile 2.36 on OnX.. the hail storm had moved in and we lost tracks and blood. We spent 2 days looking for him. Going back up in a couple days. He lost more blood in the first 300 yards then any animal I have ever shot with my bow combin. Have you seen this before? Broad head chisel tip and blades are in perfect condition..

    I just started a couple months ago but I'll tell ya, I practice 6 days of the week and by time elk season comes, I see a big ol elk, I'm taking that shot. some big dawgs on the tube straight spine a buck because it's a trophy.
    I'm not saying I'm taking the shot no matter what, but I'll be practiced, confident and ready when the time comes.

    I'm 4 for 4 on frontals. I've yet to have a frontal run more than 50 yds with unbelievable blood trails. Two of them had the broadhead pass through the whole cavity half exiting the hind end. I've had nothing but great experiences so I would say it's a very ethical shot 25 yds or closer with a straight on angle.

    I'm not trying to be a jerk, but the arrow weight is very important. If a guy of gal has a short draw length and shooting an arrow that is 420 gr. The frontal should be out of the question.. Heavy arrow at high rate of speed is the way to go for this shot.... Momentum is key.
    Just my opinion....

    • @berlinetta350
      @berlinetta350 6 лет назад +4

      The Hungry hunter his arrow for his recurve was probably around 600gr tho. That's why it got so much penetration.

      @timberg7377 6 лет назад

      Andy Gray thanks for your smartass response.. I have a 26 in draw length and I shoot 70lbs, my arrow is 430gr and my penetration sucked on my Elk.... I have a great deal of respect for the animal I hunt..
      I going to do what's best for me and my set up.

    That was bad to the Ivory...most people don't know that.. I loved it .. I once came into track after a frontal shot in idaho, I found a ton of blood, at first then the bull ran about 200 yrds up hill, no blood did 3 circles around and saw the passed 150 yrds from the trailhead, I didn't find him, I lost the track! No , blood, no arrow
    ! He, started up hill but did 3 big loops and the next season I found him, 200 yards from the heavily used trail head .. I identified it by my clients arrow from previous hunts,, arrow burried half way into rib cage.

  • @bfrykman
    @bfrykman 6 лет назад +6

    This is not an ethical nor lethal shot. Too much cape and fur, strong sternum, and a protected heart make this shot a "NO GO". I personally helped cut up two elk shot during g rifle season in Montana that had carbon arrows stuck in their lung or shoulder surrounded by puss. The arrows, and entrance wounds were from someone bow hunting (which I love to do) that thought this lazy ass shot was worth a try. This shot is not a lethal shot most of the time. Do yourself and your elk a favor and pass on the frontal shot. It's amazing an elk can survive an arrow in a lung, but it really can, tough buggers!

    • @andygray5172
      @andygray5172 6 лет назад +3

      Amy Frykman I get that it is not a shot you would want to take but you can't deny the lethality of it. I would argue that the frontal is good because it either kills them within seconds or they survive. Wounding elk is never the goal of course. I would take a frontal at 20 over a broadside at 40 any day of the week.

    You guys should not be promoting frontal shots---especially when young novice hunters may try it. It is not a ethical shot---to high of a risk period----don't be lazy and take the frontal shot---wait for the broadside lung/heart shot period. Here in Wyoming all my buddies just wait for a solid ethical side shot--period-don't post stupid things like this ---just to get subscribers ---it may work against you.--avid--wyoming hunter
