Tobal No. 1 (トバル ナンバーワン) is a fighting video game for the PlayStation developed by DreamFactory and published by Square in 1996. The game was DreamFactory's first release, as well as Square's first release on the CD-based console.
Tobal No. 1 marks Square's first incursion into the fighting game genre, although an adventure-like quest mode is part of the game. The game's mechanics were designed with the aid of fighter game designer Seiichi Ishii, while all the characters were designed by Akira Toriyama of Dragon Ball fame. The sequel, Tobal 2, was never released in North America and Europe.
Packaged with both the North American and Japanese version of the game was a sampler disc featuring a pre-release playable demo of Final Fantasy VII and video previews of Final Fantasy Tactics, Bushido Blade, and SaGa Frontier.

Still a great 3D fighting game!
Everyone voting for Bloody Roar when asked for a fighting game franchise revival, but this is the game that comes to my mind.
I played this one but , yes Blood Roar was much more fun to me, and there was one called Psychic Force too.

Tobal was so ahead of its time. Blocking animation when getting hit. Perfectly timed button presses for extra special moves(later copied by tekken) and best of all toriyama designed characters.
I would pay to get a tobal remake or a 3rd game.
What did you think about Tobal No 2? I finally played it last year and it's great and all, but I still feel like Tobal No 1 is more fun to play. It also has the better music imo.

This is one of the best fighting games of all time that almost never gets brought up. I first bought it only for the Final Fantasy 7 demo disc and found a gem without knowing it. I didn't even know what Dragonball was at the time either so I didn't recognize Akira Toriyama's character designs.

The correct way to depict a husky woman. As a teen, I was....confused by her design. Today, there is no confusion. Too bad the technology at the time could not fully realize Akira's design. Still....it did the job.

The only few times Akira Toriyama used tough motherly women in his design, without having his typical bombshell bodies. And questionable age choices.
I am not one of those 'diversity' folks, but I like when characters have varied design and don't ALL look like copies of each other with different hair and clothing.
