Hundred percent agreed, there are a lot of cases where someone of disability will be seen as not as intelligent, but that’s because no one put the extra effort in to teach them.
Growing up with a handicapped relative his mom wouldn't tolerate that she was amazing and held him to it & was just lime this teacher he died at 70 a good man because of this

Did something similar to my little brother. He's autistic, and I would have him take a step back from everything and allow him to calm down in his room. I would explain everything to him if we needed to do something different. He evenutally learned that I would not induldge him in his tantrums and fits, and instead completely ignore him. We just talk things out now. He still throws fits with my parents, but almost never with me.
Uk I’ve met plenty of autistic children in my life but only once have I met one with violent outbursts, as a man I would still be scared to an extent especially after I saw this teenage autistic boy slap his mom and she hugged him💀💀I realized that takes a special type of love and a special person because I could never handle that situation
Disabled kids can be extremely intelligent and they will test you, just like regular kids will. They have a lot more in common with regular kids than people like to believe.

Oh yes she had very much difficulty considering she was blind and deaf! The teacher is only trying to help her though. You cannot give in to the child. Otherwise you are hindering that child in the long run. And if you do not realize that I really hope you do not have children😮 even just regular children or like that. Let alone children that have disabilities and they have parents that are letting them get away with every little single thing. How the heck is she supposed to do anything on her own? We wouldn't even have anything that helps the blind without Helen keller. Sometimes its alot for the parents too, i see some disabled children when they get big enough start to physically hurt their parents they dont mean to but it takes a toll on the parents aswell
Helen experienced cognizance with Miss Sullivan, allowing her to connect the dots, absorb meaning, understanding and build on that. That's the definition of learning. The parents' approach was merely based on their expectations. Miss Sullivan had the enormous challenge of teaching both Helen and her parents.
As someone who has worked 20 years with those with different needs, I hate parents like this. Their interference always leads to the child failing in life and eventually leading them into crappy facilities, smh. They don't stay children and parents get old.

Kids will test the boundaries with the people in their lives that they're used to manipulating. That's why generalization is so important. You have to test new behaviors and coping skills with different people and in different environments to make sure the habit sticks. You have to teach the people who are used to buckling how to maintain healthy boundaries.

A teacher like that these days would get fired, sued and probably charged with some sort of crime. At least here in the States we've essentially handicapped our teachers for several decades now. And the consequences of a couple of poorly educated generations are steadily revealing themselves.
I knew a girl who grew up who was raised like this. She wasn't severely Down Syndrome. In fact, she barely had a learning disability because of it. Her parents were so terrified her Down Syndrome and upset she had it in the first place, they let her do anything she wanted. Especially when she acted up. To the point her mother got a job at the school to watch over her. Her daughter was a massive bully and so was she. The mom eventually got fired because she was caught harassing a student because he wouldn't give her daughter his dessert when she asked for it and threw a full blown toddler tantrum. If you tried to tell her she was playing a game wrong or an assignment, her first reaction was to scream bloody murder at the top of her lungs. Even to the teachers and during tests. Disabled children are still children! Parents will not be around long enough to help their kids for their whole lives. Kids become adults! You can't expect the whole world to be as tolerant as you. That's why kids need to learn to take care of themselves when they can, even disabled ones.

Spoil them for years, have a nanny fix those bad behaviors, and put the child back in the hands of the parents. It's important to instill manners so that they can conduct themselves appropriately, even in the absence of supervision. This foundation will enable them to navigate the workplace and society, allowing them to live their lives without disrupting others. We should teach them because we don't live forever what if we die first before them who will take care of them when it happens if not themselves
My daughter has autism Tourette's and ADHD. Other than occasionally giving her a break to emotionally regulate herself she does not get special treatment because she's not going to get special treatment as an adult.
I fee for both sides as a mother of a non verbal child with autism and Cystic Fibrosis. Took me years to find balance. To find my footing. Gideon has come so far. He is able to count to 20 and say the alphabet. He is finding his place in this world. ❤
Keep at it, momma, and don't let anyone in the WORLD tell you what you should be doing. I fought long and hard over being stern with mine, and despite his autism, he is polite and knows his stuff, even if he doesn't speak it. 😉
I have seen parents with disabled children who indulge their children's bad behaviour and use their disability as a reason not to discipline the child in any way. I have worked on a mental health ward with an adult in his 20s who was autistic. He had never been disciplined at all by his parents, and his behaviour was out of control. If he went out, he had to have two male carers with him to restrain him because his behaviour was so unpredictable that he couldn't be trusted not to run off and cause mayhem.
I agree with the teacher. We had a friend that was raising his son y himself. His wife, the boys mother just up and left them. I felt bad for the child but his father and and his father's family over indulged him. They came to our house one day so my husband could help him do something to his car.My boys and his son stayed in the house to watch cartoons. I gave them a snack and some milk. It was cupcakes, the buy wanted to eat the icing of and leave the cake part. He asked for another one. I told him if he ate the rest of the cupcake he could have another. He threw himself on the floor and began banging his head. My son said Mom he's banging his head. I told my son when he gets tired of it hurts his head he will stop. It was another 3-4 min. and he got up and ate the rest of his cupcake. I didn't want him to hurt himself but if I gave into that he would continue to do to others. My son's understood.
I don’t imagine they would be able to handle the same behavior from an adult woman. Not helping her learn then would have landed her in an institution later.

Fun fact, the young girl who played Helen Keller, Hallie Eisenberg, is sister to Jesse Eisenberg. She was 8 when the movie came out. She stopped acting in 2010 and has kind of stayed out of the public eye, though she was an assistant to the producers on one of her brother's movies in 2019.
Same happens today with autistic children whose parents through a fit bigger than their overgrown children if you DARE tell them their wild animals should be taught some self control!
Accommodating someone’s needs =\= treating someone like they’re incapable of being accountable for their actions that have nothing to do with their disability. Working with the special needs for almost 7 years has taught me that coddling and compensating for their voluntary bad behavior only hurts them. It’s a habit that only benefits me. These kids already have difficulty working in society, please don’t ensure that nobody will ever want to be their friend because they’ve been taught that they can do whatever they want to anyone they desire.
Anne is right...but you can see where her parents are coming from. All they want is to shower her with love and it pains them to see how much of a struggle her life is because of how different she is..unfortunately their love is what's hurting Helen.
As someone who has worked in childcare for over a decade it’s more often than not the parents doing their children a disservice by not see and supporting their full potential than the child having behavioral issues that goes for all children of differing abilities. Smh 🤦🏾♀️ and they often wonder why their children are well behaved with me their nanny and not them because they know what they can get away with when they’re with you. It really makes you not want to put in the time and effort because you know the parents/guardians arent going to stick to it when you leave and it’s to the detriment of all parties involved. It’s frustrating, why did you hire me if you don’t trust me to do my job.

Regardless of the fact that Helen was both blind and deaf, she is still a child. All children ( with or without disabilities) will test their parents its part of being a child but it's up to the parents to discipline them accordingly but also let the child know they are still loved but need to know rigjt from wrong to grow into a good adult itd hard but its needed
This actually is a big reason why disabled kids are ostracized, other kids don’t want to be scolded or abused in the presence of an improperly raised disabled child. Playing with a badly behaved disabled child is like taking abuse without question, or being scolded for human reactions to bad behavior. So other kids stay away from them. I think even a handicapped child will become separated, just from the association without of hand mentally challenged kids. They are put in the same classes, and it’s inappropriate. They are not the same at all. The association sets a low standard for all kids in special education. That’s why blind, deaf, or handicapped kids get left out. They are divided and placed among the badly behaved and significantly mentally disabled. It’s not fair to their education or social life.
I have found it is always 100% the parent's fault and children to misbehave. With autistic etc. They can still behave. They can still learn. It's the parents refuse to allow them to do so because oh poor them. It makes it impossible for the child. Their parents are literally the ones holding them back.
This child is actually pretty close in age to what the real Helen Keller would have been when Anne Sullivan first started working with her. Patty Duke and Mellissa Gilbert who both played Helen in productions of ‘The Miracle Worker” were significantly older.
I honestly don’t blame the parents. They love their child and want to do what’s best for her. They just don’t know what is best for her. It would be painful for any good parent to see their child distressed 😢
The role of a good parent is to prepare child to enter life safely and with confidence, teach them how to face obstacles and deal with distress. Not to hide from them life is not being indulged.
Allowances are for things than are directly CAUSED by the disabled not symptoms of a spoiled child. Not being able to see or hear would not require an allowance such as giving proper respect they know to give

For years I’ve felt that Hollywood has run out of fresh, original ideas, impossible as it seems. Movies and tv shows are bad, cheap rehashes of the originals or have lots of special effects. It’s cheaper to have survivor and big brother shows on tv, than original plays and some quality series or specials. I don’t watch any of the junk. The original Miracle Worker with Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke is the gold standard,mgjeir axting was powerful. I’m not going to even watch this rehash. I read real books. Remember books? Some want to ban them, but they’ll make you think and grow. Not spoken book recordings…. real books, read with your own eyes, with the richness of words in them. The kind that Fahrenheit 451 was all about.

My son has high fuctioning ASD and the first thing i taught him was manners, hes now a teenager and people are always saying how polite he is :)

I have seen parents with disabled children who indulge their children's bad behaviour and use their disability as a reason not to discipline the child in any way. I have worked on a mental health ward with an adult in his 20s who was autistic. He had never been disciplined at all by his parents, and his behaviour was out of control. If he went out, he had to have two male carers with him to restrain him because his behaviour was so unpredictable that he couldn't be trusted not to run off and cause mayhem.

I agree with the teacher.
We had a friend that was raising his son y himself. His wife, the boys mother just up and left them. I felt bad for the child but his father and and his father's family over indulged him. They came to our house one day so my husband could help him do something to his car.My boys and his son stayed in the house to watch cartoons. I gave them a snack and some milk. It was cupcakes, the buy wanted to eat the icing of and leave the cake part. He asked for another one. I told him if he ate the rest of the cupcake he could have another. He threw himself on the floor and began banging his head. My son said Mom he's banging his head. I told my son when he gets tired of it hurts his head he will stop. It was another 3-4 min. and he got up and ate the rest of his cupcake. I didn't want him to hurt himself but if I gave into that he would continue to do to others. My son's understood.
I don’t imagine they would be able to handle the same behavior from an adult woman. Not helping her learn then would have landed her in an institution later.
The child is such a good actress
Parents love has no boundaries. Society does.
Literally spoiling a child having a temper tantrum. They were keeping her from learning,from growing up, from acting civilized. That behaviour wouldnt work as an adult.
Fun fact, the young girl who played Helen Keller, Hallie Eisenberg, is sister to Jesse Eisenberg. She was 8 when the movie came out. She stopped acting in 2010 and has kind of stayed out of the public eye, though she was an assistant to the producers on one of her brother's movies in 2019.
Same happens today with autistic children whose parents through a fit bigger than their overgrown children if you DARE tell them their wild animals should be taught some self control!

Accommodating someone’s needs =\= treating someone like they’re incapable of being accountable for their actions that have nothing to do with their disability. Working with the special needs for almost 7 years has taught me that coddling and compensating for their voluntary bad behavior only hurts them. It’s a habit that only benefits me. These kids already have difficulty working in society, please don’t ensure that nobody will ever want to be their friend because they’ve been taught that they can do whatever they want to anyone they desire.
The son felt like he was never tested the same way and moved to Tokyo to improve his drift skills 😂

Anne is right...but you can see where her parents are coming from. All they want is to shower her with love and it pains them to see how much of a struggle her life is because of how different she is..unfortunately their love is what's hurting Helen.
As someone who has worked in childcare for over a decade it’s more often than not the parents doing their children a disservice by not see and supporting their full potential than the child having behavioral issues that goes for all children of differing abilities. Smh 🤦🏾♀️ and they often wonder why their children are well behaved with me their nanny and not them because they know what they can get away with when they’re with you. It really makes you not want to put in the time and effort because you know the parents/guardians arent going to stick to it when you leave and it’s to the detriment of all parties involved. It’s frustrating, why did you hire me if you don’t trust me to do my job.

My Grandma's Grandma's name was Margaret Josephine Sullivan. And age had a sister called Anne. If they're any relation, I understand my grandma now.
Regardless of the fact that Helen was both blind and deaf, she is still a child. All children ( with or without disabilities) will test their parents its part of being a child but it's up to the parents to discipline them accordingly but also let the child know they are still loved but need to know rigjt from wrong to grow into a good adult itd hard but its needed
And this is why not many people in college have manners.
This actually is a big reason why disabled kids are ostracized, other kids don’t want to be scolded or abused in the presence of an improperly raised disabled child. Playing with a badly behaved disabled child is like taking abuse without question, or being scolded for human reactions to bad behavior. So other kids stay away from them. I think even a handicapped child will become separated, just from the association without of hand mentally challenged kids. They are put in the same classes, and it’s inappropriate. They are not the same at all. The association sets a low standard for all kids in special education. That’s why blind, deaf, or handicapped kids get left out. They are divided and placed among the badly behaved and significantly mentally disabled. It’s not fair to their education or social life.

I have found it is always 100% the parent's fault and children to misbehave. With autistic etc. They can still behave. They can still learn. It's the parents refuse to allow them to do so because oh poor them. It makes it impossible for the child. Their parents are literally the ones holding them back.

This child is actually pretty close in age to what the real Helen Keller would have been when Anne Sullivan first started working with her. Patty Duke and Mellissa Gilbert who both played Helen in productions of ‘The Miracle Worker” were significantly older.

I honestly don’t blame the parents. They love their child and want to do what’s best for her. They just don’t know what is best for her. It would be painful for any good parent to see their child distressed 😢
The role of a good parent is to prepare child to enter life safely and with confidence, teach them how to face obstacles and deal with distress. Not to hide from them life is not being indulged.

Allowances are for things than are directly CAUSED by the disabled not symptoms of a spoiled child. Not being able to see or hear would not require an allowance such as giving proper respect they know to give
If your child is disabled and acting like that then you have failed as a parent

For years I’ve felt that Hollywood has run out of fresh, original ideas, impossible as it seems. Movies and tv shows are bad, cheap rehashes of the originals or have lots of special effects. It’s cheaper to have survivor and big brother shows on tv, than original plays and some quality series or specials. I don’t watch any of the junk. The original Miracle Worker with Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke is the gold standard,mgjeir axting was powerful. I’m not going to even watch this rehash. I read real books. Remember books? Some want to ban them, but they’ll make you think and grow. Not spoken book recordings…. real books, read with your own eyes, with the richness of words in them. The kind that Fahrenheit 451 was all about.
