- What is the American Sound? This rare horn, first introduced in the early 70's, provides a unique glimpse into another of Buffet's interpretations.
Pardon my squeaks on the S1...this was my first hour playing the horn, and my fingers weren't used to the heights. AND throat F# ripped on the R13 as I started to play it. This is why I like cork...
Thanks again Dale for what YOU'RE doing for the clarinet WORLD! :) WOOT!
Pardon my squeaks on the S1...this was my first hour playing the horn, and my fingers weren't used to the heights. AND throat F# ripped on the R13 as I started to play it. This is why I like cork...and this is also what I get for having too many horns.
do you think S1 is worth 1000 euros ?
I really like your performance!
I can hear the supreme sound from your clarinet.
Thank you very, very much! I love your collection of favorites on your channel...so many greats there!
Dale Fedele, Your sound always reminds me of the great Marcellus, Gigliotti, and Wright!
My CT is currently serviced by Scott Simon in San Jose. He services most of my Saxophones, clarinets and flutes.
The S1 Is a very good clarinet , it is a very high level clarinet even today, like any recent model
I agree very much. I love it, it's a shame some overlook them. From a personal level, I'd prefer to perform most gigs with this over, say, a Tosca or Divine Buffet.
@@DaleFedelewat is beter r13 s1
I’m very interested in what you have to say. I’ve tried to watch your videos a number of times however, your mic placement needs to change. Cannot hear your voice, the clarinet blows me out of the room. May I suggest a Lavalier, lapel mic, or a 10 dB pad between speaking and playing. Again love the videos but I race for the volume control between speaking and listening to the demo. Thanks and keep up the good work!
I used to own an S1. Then I bought not 1 but 2 Selmer Centeredtones from 1957 & 58. Still have the '57. Good for jazz.
I need to try more vintages of CTs! I've only played 2-3 ever in good playing shape. I do however have great experience with Series 9's, BT's, and (for legit) 10G's! Who worked on your CT?
I have a 1973 full boehm r13 and it is fantastic
Interesting video.. have you tried swapping barrels?
Fantastic comparison. Really appreciate your work. I have a 75K and a 175K R13. I love playing the 75K but get mixed reviews from other's in the section. Hence I primarily play the 175K. Now I know why :) 75K projects like a beast and much brighter, but for me I love the difference. Sometimes that's just what you need, sometimes not so much. Thanks again.
S1 C clarinet ??
Hello Dale have you ever played German system Oehler clarinets
Any thoughts on R13 vs Festival ?
Do you like the new Buffet Boxwood??
wat is beter r13 S1 ? Antwoord me alsjeblieft
Hi Dale, thanks for your review! I happen to have a chance of choosing a 1987 r13 and a 1978 s1, what would you choose? It’s for my 8 year old daughter
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! That's a tough call, both should be excellent horns. Might you be able to send me pictures of both? I'm curious about the overhaul or pad life or wood life, and I can tell a lot by pictures. Can you email me at dalemfedele@gmail.com ?
Dale Fedele I really appreciate your help! Sending you now, they are in different conditions for sure, price wise too. Thanks a lot!
I'm afraid I have to disagree with some of what you say. I own one of all the main Buffet models from within a couple of years of 1980: R13, RC, S1 and BC20. The bore measurements on the upper joints are all extremely close to each other and utterly different from a pre-1955 Buffet's cylindrical bore. At least at that period, the S1 was definitely not a narrow-bore instrument. The difference with the R13 is much more apparent in the shape of the tone holes, which are heavily undercut on the R13, but more nearly cylindrical on the others (to different extents). I'm pretty sure it's this that gives them their different tone colours and responses. For what it's worth, I'd describe the R13 as the *least* "big" sound. But this probably shows that the word means different things on different sides of the Atlantic: most UK players would not describe Americans as having a big sound. It shows the difficulty of describing these things verbally.
UK players maybe are familiar with "broad" sound, maybe because of big bore clarinets of the past (B&H 1010), while american call bug sound to a projecting an full armonics instrument, what in other regions is calificated as "small and brilliant sound". I believe that the best concepts of this, is Americans one...broad is unfocused...
I have to try an R13!
Yes!!! This is why I go crazy for vintage mouthpieces, they pair well with R13s
What mouthpiece do you suggest to suit R13?
Oh man...this is a can of worms! First of all, what country do you live in?
My 20plus year old Ralph Morgan (1,06mm) works well with my R13 (#74202 around 1962). That is considering my limitations as a clarinet player. Also Rue Lepic 3.5 Great videos with amazing nuances.
@@jefft9729 Thank you very much!! First of all, I am jealous of your R13! My very first golden era was 74249. The great Harold Wright of the Boston Symphony played a 72xxx (and he also played 80xxxs to my knowledge) and purposefully didn't play Buffets from the late 60's or later (even though he passed in '93). I feel 72-74xxx is very special. They are the first Buffet R13's to NOT feature solid German Silver keywork. The keywork is much lighter, and the wood is a smaller diameter. By 75-76xxx, the wall thickness of the wood increased, and I find these horns much more difficult to play. By the mid-to-late-80xxxs, the walls had again decreased, and I love those horns too, but there is an ease to 72-74xxx that is unsurpassed, in my opinion (at least among Bb clarinets).
I love old Ralph Morgan mouthpieces as well! I remember well the first time I played one, and the resonance of the material (in addition to the craft of the facing and baffle) was night-and-day vs my Vandoren M14 1.01 at the time (and that was a battle tested piece). That was my first venture into rubber with actual resonance! Shortly after, I tried my first Chedeville and Kaspar, and then I went crazy, but I still think of old handmade Morgan's as some of the best mouthpieces ever.
Thank you again for your comments! I hope you will enjoy more videos I have coming up shortly!!
I prefer the R13 still
