    Soprano Mary Thomas singing alternating vocals with Jeff Lynne makes this, without a doubt, one of the best endings in a song...EVER. This is one of my all time favorite ELO songs. The album "A New World Record" is my favorite ELO record. Shangri La, So Fine, Above the Clouds, and the list goes on and on. All the songs are just so good. Jeff Lynne is a musical genius worthy of going down in history alongside the other masters Handel, Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Wagner, and the many others....... A different era of music....but just as significant. Hopefully in 500 years, others will enjoy his music as much as classical music is still enjoyed to this very day. Because with modern archiving and digital technology, the original recordings should be able to be played forever.

    TIME is a concept album. If you want to be daring, react to the full album. You would be the first on RUclips.
    ELO was not a critical darling during their most productive years. Jeff was accused of being too Beatles derivative, and becoming overly “corporate rock” commercial. The band was popular with the public, though. Unfortunately, it’s archived critical reviews from the era that tend to write history.
    The good news: You are apparently not aware that over the last near decade, ELO and Jeff have seen a great critical rehabilitation with many of their most harshest attackers now softening up greatly. Jeff has turned into an “elder statesman of pop rock” of sorts with some suggesting their music was made before its time. Among fellow musicians, Jeff is looked at as a “musician’s musician” and not underrated.
    People are starved for melodic, well-crafted pop these days, especially after years of rhythmic-based rap, hip hop and other contemporary music. Younger listeners like yourself are finding ELO daily thanks to TV and movies. A common comment coming from these discoverers is that they’ve “never heard anything like them before”.

    • @alanburge4798
      @alanburge4798 3 года назад +5

      Yeah. Right. You have summed things up well. The critics. Experts. Big know it alls. They hated ELO. With a passion. Now it seems to have changed. ELO now are suddenly cool. Go figure ! They were always cool. Jeff Lynne is very very clever. Talented. A musical genius.

      I’m willing to state that from his overall musicality to body if work, Jeff Lynne is right up there with pop geniuses like Brian Wilson. As time rolls on and we see what’s produced by current artists, this claim just gets stronger.

    • @tomledoux
      @tomledoux 2 года назад +1

      Just my opinion
      Think of this in context: this band was literally the biggest musical act in the world at one time. This band was a big part of the end of disco and "what came next" in popular music. Jeff Lynne is a multi instrumentalist genius. He's worked with everyone and held his music tight until several years ago. He refused to sell out and license his music. A few years ago he started sharing his music catalog through advertising licensing, Mr Blue Sky for apple. I think he realized he had to in order to share the music that he has been making for 50 years.
      The recent resurgence in interest and airplay for ELO over the last 10+ years is a direct result of this.
      It's funny you mentioned Jeff Lynne is a "one man band" he recorded and mixed every part of one of his albums at home.

    As for Shangri-La, I believe it's a fictional place (from a novel called Lost Horizon, by a James Hilton), a utopia or paradise-like place somewhere in Tibet. It has since become a synonym for utopia or paradise. In the song, it is of course a metaphor for the lost love and/or the state of being in love.

    You might like George Harrison's song When We was Fab. It was co-written by Jeff Lynne and his vocals add so much to the song. It's from Georges album Cloud Nine which Jeff did production for. He also played bass and helped with string arrangements. There were many heavy hitter musicians like Elton John on piano and Eric Clapton on guitar as well as Ringo on drums. I think it was one of Georges finest albums thanks to Jeff.

    They're kind of "underrated" because they're still ahead of time. So progressive.

    I think if you react to the TIME album as a whole you will better get the flow of the story being told. Besides the music is phenomenal , so you won't be sorry ! Jeff had such a remarkable voice . So soothing , and mellow ..PERFECT for the Ballads he so masterfully crafted ! By The By . It's a joy to watch you so enjoy the music that made me cry when I was a kid .

    Every ELO fan loves the passionate ending. If you're an ELO fan then you should definitely listen to "The Rape" by Esperanto. It has probably what is my second favorite ending, full of passion, grief and emotions. Check it out!

    Hello young brother and greetings from North Carolina. Thanks so much for your honesty and your passion for the amazing appreciation for ELO! This song is so unlike the pop music and some of the sappy love songs of that era. Yes, I was there. I'm 60 now and I've mellowed. Back in the mid 1970's, most of the people I knew were listening to shallow, mundane tunes that would sell hits. I SO appreciate you going into deep tracks that have been unearthed for the listeners of today! Please, keep doing what what are doing to save the great music of the era! Shalom!

    A reaction to Time as an album would be great! I wonder what state of mind you'll be in after. Not́e that some editions include singles that were not included on the original LP, as extra tracks. As they are placed at the end, they do not occur in "story order", if there is such an order.

    Amazing Pieces of art by Jeff Lynne

    Great reaction.
    Yes! Yes! - Time is so under-rated as were most of ELO's albums (despite the band having huge hits). Not only does Time have a string of superb songs that were not actually big hits (ELO were beginning to lose their commercial magic by then) but being a concept album, they flow so well together. Reacting to the entire work would be awesome. Not seen it done elsewhere.
    Jeff's albums are always packed full of ideas - it's time his back catalog was re-appraised as a set of albums rather than just the hits.
    Eldorado is also a great album - but perhaps harder listening than Time (it's a bit closer to a prog feel than the more electronic pop of Time). I have seen it reviewed by a pair of 'reactors' who were not ELO fans especially but they still appreciated it.

    I love your reaction. I’ve been listening to this for the last 40 years. Yes I’m THAT old! You’re not human if it doesn’t make you tear up. And yes Jeff was and still is an undeniable genius but take a look at some live performances, there are a lot more members of ELO that were/are incredibly talented. ELO was more than just Jeff Lynne.

    Time every time Josh what an album, the album is all about time travel, a great story told throughout.
