    It;s good to see Mr. Hurst in your videos. Tandy has made a lot of money off me because of the tools he has shown me. I made a couple of these valets for personal use. I used 3 to 4 oz. and glued together so it would look finished on both sides and use snaps rather than Chicago screws so it would lay flat in my suitcase while traveling. I used the top rounded cap on both side of each corner to keep the look cleaner. That's how I personalized what I made from your demo. Thanks for making the video.

    What products do you use on pre dyed leather? I have some beautiful hibiscus pink using it for purses and I’d love to add some leather work on the front of it. I’m a true beginner on this type of leather work.

    The traced outline was not very clear, when Michael finished using the craftaid. Consequently the lines were not showing where the swivel knife was to be used.

    Can/how one go about doing this dye process with multiple colours? Like if I wanted the negative space inside the circle to remain the natural colour?

    • @TandyLeatherCo
      @TandyLeatherCo  8 лет назад +2

      +Leo Foglesong Great question! You can add other colors or leave negative space using Super Shene for a resist technique. You can learn more about this technique with George Hurst at ruclips.net/video/lW7wcLik9LY/видео.html

      can i use upholstery leather for carving tools

    • @TandyLeatherCo
      @TandyLeatherCo  8 лет назад

      +Jakie Carandang Hello Jackie! Vegetable tanned leather is what you need for tooling, such as those found at www.tandyleather.com/en/category/tooling-shoulders-bends-bellies
      Upholstery leather is created through a process known as "chrome tanning" and is a finished leather, so it cannot be carved.

    What material is the board you are doing all of this on?? I'm having trouble figuring out which board to use for what. Poly boards, granite, set healing mats are what I keep hearing. Which is best for which part of a leather project?

    • @TandyLeatherCo
      @TandyLeatherCo  7 лет назад +1

      Susi Q,
      That is our Professional Cutting Board.
      Leather crafting is divided between 2 types of boards. Marble and quartz are made for tooling leather on. If you cut on them they'll get scratched up. Something like this. www.tandyleather.com/en/product/deluxe-quartz-slab-12-x-12.
      poly cutting boards or our Professional Cutting Board you saw in the video are made for cutting and punching holes. www.tandyleather.com/en/product/poly-cutting-boards

    when doing a lot of tooling, how do you handle stretching of the leather?

    • @TandyLeatherCo
      @TandyLeatherCo  6 лет назад

      You can either use rubber cement and glue the leather to a piece of cardboard, or you can use tape to prevent it from moving.

  • @ArtyHelen
    @ArtyHelen 8 лет назад

    Time and time again I've read that antiquing gel is NOT for use on the flesh side of leather, and yet Tandy pros still use it that way all the time... Which advice should we be following?

    • @TandyLeatherCo
      @TandyLeatherCo  8 лет назад +2

      +ArtyHelen Great question. Some of it depends on application. The flesh side of the leather can be colored, however it is difficult to get a color fast seal due to its rough and porous nature. For projects such as this, it works great for creating a consistent color all over the project. However, you likely wouldn't want to use it on the flesh side of a belt that is constantly rubbing against cloth with the addition of body heat and moisture.

    • @ShelleyLimegrover

      Could I not also add a sealer like super sheen to the back? I know a lot of people recommend burnishing the back with gum tragacanth, but that wouldn't be easy to do on an item already moulded.

    • @TheMysterySquad
      @TheMysterySquad 7 лет назад +1

      Tandy has a fantastic selection of Craftaid impressions (what I would call stencils). They have stores in a lot of major cities. Also, they're running a "Red Shirt Wednesday" special. Come in on a Wednesday with a red shirt on, and get $5 off. No minimum purchase! Craftaids are usually about $10.

    Good morning ,why can you die leather after you drawn on the middle, before bending ages?

    • @TandyLeatherCo
      @TandyLeatherCo  8 лет назад

      +Юрий Годик Some of it is a matter of preference and what dye you are using. The benefit of shaping before you color is that you don't have to worry about any of the color running once you re-saturate it to form it. Additionally, it makes it difficult to get the leather damp enough for wet molding if you have dyed both sides since the dye somewhat seals the pours.

    CRINGE VIDEO! You should be spraying saddle lac (or some kind of finish) once that GEL dries. Or do you want antique gel on your skin DAILY? Also wetting the leather after tooling is a big mistake! It Loosens the fibers. You should only be wetting the areas you need to bend/work with. which obviously is not the part you stamped out. Ugh. I'm sorry but I would expect more from Tandy Video's. Your brand is great no doubt! Take care folks!
