Looking at one on my back porch eating a grasshopper right now… pretty neat to see. Never thought Mississippi had killer beetles. Looked it up and found out I’m very wrong 😂
I assume the flipping is for preventing the prey from grabbing hold of the ground and getting away, thus using less energy for the catch. Beautiful species. Thank you for sharing. :)
I miss mine,I had about twenty of them in a huge bin set up in high school,I once tossed a live pinky mouse in there, and it was gone within three minutes. Haven’t seen any in years,I graduated in 2016.
I love these guys in the right conditions they will breed. They will live for a couple of years in captivity if given the chance to hibernate. Great video.Cheers!
I just received a red stripe beetle from bugsincyberspace and it flipped on its back to chow on a freeze dried grasshopper. Lol never knew they did that.
Is there any way to get them to eat I tried everything including earthworms and their preferred prey, caterpillars but he won't even attempt to touch anything I put in there
@@Aquarimax I tried crickets but unfortunately that didn't work The only way I've been able to get it to eat so far what's to grab the beetle I'm gently pressed his head into the food, inducing it to fight 0 But this doesn't always work and it's really not ideal
I'd have liked to have learned a bit more about this beetle - re: can it be bred in captivity or is it only possible to obtain wild collected specimens, etc.

I'm so glad I subscribed to this channel. Well, I guess BICS is getting more of my money now, thanks Russ.
Ooooh! Very, very cool! Love the shiny green.
Healthy appetites all round there. It's good to see the critters in our care enjoying their food.
Indeed it is! One of the many satisfying aspects of caring for them!
Very cool beetle!
These are fantastic beetles that I’ve only seen in the wild, and found predated elytra from. But I’ve never seen one eat before!
It’s quite a spectacle each time!
Since they're somewhat specialized in caterpillars, they'll likely do well with climbable surfaces.
Can you do a care video for these?
That’s Absolutely Beautiful
They truly are!

Good point! That makes sense!
Most likely the flipping over is so they can help tear open the insects like how crocodile does when doing a death roll
@@billfrogsby2024I do see that because the underside of most bugs are softer so yeah
@@derrickhageman1969 yes true but what I meant was the beetle flipping itself like a crocodile The Twist off a part of the insects body
Those Dairy Cows! 😂

Thank you! I may try to allow this one to hibernate next winter then.
What a cool beetle!
Very strong and aggressive feeding response 👌
Oh hey, I got bitten by one of those! They are beautiful beetles.

Also, how long lived are those?
@@icebear5554 up to 2 years from what I hear
Acrobatic predator!
I can see the woodlice's point. The superworm was dead. Clearly ready to be cleaned up.
You should do a best pet invertebrate video on these guys! I miss that series.
I do enjoy filming them with Clint !
@@Aquarimax Oh I more so meant the videos that you produce on your channel, the ones like your Bumblebee, The best pet inverts video
I was walking my dog and it bit him on the lip, should I have any worries about venom?
No, fortunately these are not venomous.

Maybe I need to make another video of that sort!
How often do you feed them? And is a waterdish recommended?
How long do adults live for?
How do you breed this species?
Couple of years, with one report reaching 4 after eclosing.
Very pretty! Are they related to ground beetles?
They are indeed a type of ground beetle!
How big is this beatle? Just curious! Very pretty! Are they bite happy with humans?
It is about 1.5-2inches long ? I haven’t handled it a lot, but they are known to bite!
Man id like some predatory beetles for myself, what species is the most common in the trade and what would you recommend Rus?
A Pasymachus warrior beetle is a fairly common one that I have recently started with.
Found one at work. Tried to pick it up. Worst mistake ever! I couldn't get rid of the smell. I stunk my entire shift of what smelt like rotten cheese.
They have a powerfully unpleasant repugnatorial fluid, 💯
Great video! Beetles besides scarabs and darklings don't get nearly enough attention.
Agreed! More love for the predatory carabids!
What stops him from eating those isopods
He didn’t seem very interested for some reason
@@Aquarimax probably just doesn't think it's worth the effort for the nutritional value
Those mancae are dicing with trouble ha ha :)
Right??
