Saturday night live even did a skit about them at trial, with the actors dressed boyishly in pastel sweaters, giving melodramatic tears in the witness box. Essentially making fun of how these adult, vicious, greedy killers were trying to portray themselves as innocent little boys in these demure sweaters acting all over-the-top sad and woe-is-me.
But they weren't acting, or lying. They endured horrific abuse. But the culture at the time didn't really acknowledge sexual abuse against men, or even the severity of the effects of child abuse. Child abuse has only been a concept since about the 1970s. Before that, what happened in the home was private business that wasn't talked about outside the home, and corporeal punishment was an accepted method of parenting. Children were seen almost like property and however the parents controlled them was the family's business and at the parents discretion.

Psychologists came forward after spending many hours with the brothers and testified that they abuse did in fact happen, family members also testified to this. 2. The brothers grew up in such a toxic environment that they never knew anything outside of it. This is a pattern among abused children. 3. You are very heartless and cold for not believing these men. In the trial hald of the jury wanted them out of jail and the other half wanted them in jail but for 2nd degree murder. So it ended up a mis trial. The second trial was done without tv broadcast, because it was just after OJ Simpson walked out without punishment.
The judge was the same as the first trial but only the youngest brother went on to testify, because the other one, the one testifying hete on the stand, couldn't because he couldn't handle it mentally. So the jury never heard him speak. They also weren't allowed to bring in the evidence of sexual abuse.
So long story short: they got sentenced to life without parole.
Wich I feel was wrong. They should have been out of jail by now. They were victims and there was enough evidence. If they were women they wouldn't be in jail right now.
It was told to them that if they were battered women they could get out.

My heart goes out to these young men every time I watch bits of their trial. yes, it was wrong to murder their parents, no, it wasn't about the inheritance, the truth was, it was about stopping the sexual abuse, that had never been addressed. Their father committed it, their mother hushed it and the boys endured it. Our justice system doesn't address or take into consideration the mental torture that sexual abuse inflicts on victims, and in this case, it was inflicted on them BY the people who were supposed to love them the most, protect them...the most. Defend them...the most. Parental betrayal is the worst kind of betrayal. I hope when reviewing cases like this, our courts have the courage to consider compassion/justice in their rulings. Society failed the Menendez brothers. Yes, they should be imprisoned, but not for life. Their freedom was stolen in childhood. They've been PRISONERS their entire lives.

This had to be embarrassing for them to say these things in court. I remember when Aileen Wuornos was on trial and it came out her brother had sex with her. There were witnesses..but she denied it. I could tell there was such a deep seated shame for her she couldn’t admit it even to help herself in her own trial. This type of humiliation and shame is so deep. I feel so bad for them. How could the jurors not have considered this? Just these nude photos mixed in with party photos is very compelling evidence that they were telling the truth.

That is so bad, this type of victim shaming in our society when really all the shame should go to disgusting Abusers like their parents were. :(

Jurors did. Which is why this trial resulted in two deadlocked juries. The second trial was "adjusted" in a way to ensure a conviction.

I just can't believe that someone could sit and watch this in court or on television, see all the evidence, listen to the boys crying, and think these boys were lying about what they went through. To speak up about something that has happened to you and to be mocked, ridiculed, and not believed doesn't feel good. These boys are victims, they have served their time and they should be set free.

In light of new witness and new victims of their fathers coming forward hopefully they get a new trial. So terrifying to think of all they went through.

This is pretty long. Lol sorry, it's just my thoughts..
My sister attempted to kill my mom when I was 7. Because my mom messed her up while she was painting her nails. My mother has one hand due to cerebral palsy and my sister beat her up, dragged her down the stairs (14 of them), knocked her out and then went and got a butcher knife. I was home with pink eye and I remember beating my sister in the head with the house phone and choking her to get her to stop trying to attack my mom. My mom got up and ran and left me in the house with her. She didn't attack me. We sat down on the couch like nothing happened until the cops came and tackled her, she was 15/16 at the time and got released from juvi at 18. A backstory to this is that my mother would beat us bloody for nothing. With a belt, brushes, shoes, spoons, rulers. I had to walk up and down the stairs, stand against the wall, do wall sits. All under the age of 7 along with knowing my multiplication and cursive writing before I was 5.
Guess what my sister was released because she didn't go through with the murder.
Ive heard the only reason these brothers were charged was because they were rich and "had it all" and so they just killed their parents to kill them. But what people have to understand, is when you're basically held captive in your own house what are you to do as a child, a teen --a kid barely tall enough to ride rollercoasters or have any money for their own place? I've must have ran away to a fire station lips and nose bleeding at least 3 times and each time they sent me back home, to her and by that time my sister was locked up, gone I had no one to defend me. I didn't attack my mom but I did start defending myself at 15. The last time she hit me I was 16.
The system fails children all the time. It sucks and it shouldn't happen. Clearly you can see their story is real, the pain in their eyes and voice when they recount their past. Yes it was brutal and terrible what they did, but was it justified?
    In my opinion,
    Yes.

Sorry for your childhood abuse by your mother. The way to Healing and out of this world, of Good vs Evil, is through God, Jesus, Who was also abused, by the humans, He made with His Father!
Then He rose from the dead, to be able to form a New Kingdom, wherein dwells, Only True Love and Peace!!!
We are All, guilty of some kind of bad behavior, some of us way worse than others and All need this Savior, to forgive us and give us forgiveness for others. We don't forgive them, for their sake, but so the stress of it and bitterness does not dwell in us anymore.
Anyone, under this kind of abuse, I know, are justified for fighting back and defending themselves!!! I'm glad you did! Had your mother died, she would have deserved it! It is shocking, how bad she beat you, even being crippled!!! 😢
God Warns, in The Holy Bible, to Not Hurt Children or their punishment, Will be Severe for Eternity! They will be abused, by demons, Forever having to Feel what they made the kids feel......... 😱
I pray you've been Born Again, by asking Jesus into your Heart! He is the TRUE LOVE. 🙌🏻 ✝️

I'm so, so sorry your mother was so unbelievably vicious to you and your sister. I wish I could give you both the biggest hug right now, and I hope that you're both safe and so happy, now. I agree 1000%, the murders were more than justified. It makes me so sad that in the end, it had to be them to do it. You can see they still carry so much guilt. I'm in school for law and am hoping to become an attorney in the end, and I will do ALL I can to try and fix these tears in the system and society, little by little. Take care, sweetheart. 💙

Horrific what was done to these sweet boys. The father was a monster in every way and the mother was also. Both narcissists and evil.
These boys deserve justice and should be freed. They have paid enough.
    God help them.

We have to be very careful when we portray Lyle and Erik as poor victims and José and Kitty as horrible monsters, because in doing so we might just be reflecting our own stupidity.

@@sana_the_bookaholic I've watched this case incredibly closely and I've given my full opinion on it on several posts. To me, you just sound like another dumbass who believes every single word coming out of the mouth of Lyle and Erik, when they have a severe criminal record when it comes to telling lies and breaking the law.
I would love to see your reaction if Lyle took his toupee off and started telling the truth. Only then you would realize how little common sense you have.
