Apologies in advance for the issues in this video. We were contemplating not posting it because we were both mentally not feeling great this day and then we had camera issues, but I figured it would be best not to waste this reaction. We will be back with another video soon that is much better.
Right, my dad is so many levels away from putting a sentence like this together. The amount of references and hip hop knowledge you’d need to even be able to say this…lmao
As an addict myself.... this album saved me for many years. Still struggling, but Danny has a unique rap energy that can make me laugh, cry, and think about some very dark topics.
Also an addict. It's nice to hear someone talk about it, but not just in a group meeting sort of way. His creativity is what helps make his message shine through. Like, when he talks about still being drunk from last night and getting a bloody mary-yeah, I get it, and I'd hear that in a meeting. But "Everybody says, 'You got a lot to be proud of.' Been high this whole time, don't realize what I've done," is such a relatable line that I don't hear as often. There are more and better examples, but you get my point. And then, the dark thoughts, the moments you give yourself away and say, "fuck it..." I feel all of this is embodied in the instrumentation. I always liked weird music, but after becoming an addict, that sharp, abrasive music... idk, drowns out(?) or something, it feels like a cop-out. There's comfort in the chaos. For those reasons, this will be an all-time favorite album for me.
@@anochi8965 sure you could say this is art and have your own opinion but come on. This album is extremely overrated and I honestly don’t get how people could bear to like this album
Danny's ability to flow over any wonky beat thrown his way is def impressive. I've heard him talk about how he grew up playing trumpet at school and when he's listening to beats he still imagines trumpet lines playing over them, then he finds the words to fit.

I remember reading an interview with Danny before the release of this album and maybe even before the release of the previous album Old where he mentioned he loved Joy Division. The line “this is the way step inside” on Gold Dust is another reference to the Joy Division track.

This album always hit hard for me, and I could relate to a lot of the issues of mental health on this album, but after dealing with drug addiction personally this album hits even harder. It’s like almost too relatable from the first few lines. It’s hard for me to listen to know because I feel everything he’s saying deep in my soul. I remember the cabin fever of being stuck in my room for a couple days but being to paranoid to leave it. Staying up for days snorting coke, meth and god knows what. People watching me spiral thinking I was just some fun party guy but i started depending on these drugs to form basic functions. Just like ain’t it funny, everyone was watching me spiral but not realizing or caring how serious it was. Dude those times were rough. I’m only 21, and thankfully I’ve been able to get past that and im not in the depths of addiction any more. But goddamn does this album portray those experiences so well.
The sample for "Ain't It Funny" is from Pink Floyd's Nick Mason solo album. Track is called "Wervin." I believe Robert Wyatt of Soft Machine does the vocals for the album.
A great breakdown. I was not expecting your dad to be so cool. Danny has said this was his first ever album with a big budget(100k) from the label and he spent 70k on his samples but then another 50 on mixing and mastering. He can't do anything until the money's been recouped. Danny is for sure a one of a kind artist, the voice pitch changes with his punch lines just mesh perfectly.
One of the greatest rap albums of all time for me personally. Once you’ve had to depend on any kind of substance to just get through the day, or had one too many bad trips this album becomes so painfully real. Probably the best depiction of addiction and how it tears you and the people you love apart.
This album i would say is the music equivalent of requiem for a dream. Just hitting you with over stimulation showing you horrors of addiction. Leaving you blown away by the execution and message. Keep it up guys! Great album can't wait for DG The Money Store.
Man you guys really are the best music reviewers around, i've been watching from the very beginning, i've loved hanging with you guys every time. I think an album you both would love is The Resistance by Muse. A lot of their work after that album has been pretty wack tbh but that particular one from them is an absolute gem.
I love Ain't It Funny! Danny Brown's voice DID put me off at first, but then i found myself muttering his music under my breath, until I realized how INTERESTING he is. NOW, play DNA, also by Danny Brown. It sounds COMPLETELY DIFFERENT, like completely not this Atrocity Exhibition Danny Brown, yet is still one of my all time favorite songs. Sincerely, check out DNA.
DO EARL DO EARL DO EARL
Would love to see a React to "Songs of Her's" by Her's. Feel like the appreciation for the indie sound before it really took off would be incredible. Especially since the band is no longer with us.
I think you need to climb towards The Money Store for sure. This is the base of that mountain. what a spectacular album. a 10/10 easily
Was really looking forward to this one! Now I'm looking forward to xxx...
