Bret was leaving for WCW no matter what and they both weren't gonna do the job it wasn't just Shawn that was stuck up, its also a tradition in wrestling that if your leaving that you lose on your way out, unless your Trish Stratus lol
I know I'm two years late, but Bret Hart left for WCW because Vince promised him a lifetime contract. Vince then made WWE a publicly traded company forcing him to cut on contract spending. He then had Hart lose the WWE title to Shawn Michaels in Canada which Hart had no problem doing until Michaels said he wouldn't do the same. Bret then tried to compromise and drop the title in L.A or somewhere else in the U.S and that's the Montreal Screwjob and that's also why Bret left for WCW.
