- Google laid off 12,000 employees last week saying it couldn't afford these workers. The only problem? Google made nearly $14 billion in profit last quarter.
BT's Kei Pritsker attended a protest by the Alphabet Workers Union, who are taking on one of the world's largest corporations.
"Getting breakfast at our cafe" Sounds like it was a pretty good life while it lasted.
They can’t afford to pay content providers they make ad money off of either. Regarding music on YT, they’ve consistently claimed they know they owe the money, they just never built the infrastructure to pay people. Imagine how better society would be if one of the wealthiest corporations in the history of the world just shared a little bit more with people they make money off of.
these are trillion dollar companies. they are pathetic and greedy. i'd fire all their executives in a heartbeat for mismanagement and give them negative references so mccrappers wont even hire them.
If you aren't creating more value than you cost, you don't have a job, you have a position.
Google don't be evil
The dystopian nature of capitalism. Solidarity forever!
Companies aren't allowed to discriminate against you because you're pregnant. That works both ways. You can't force companies to ignore the fact that you're pregnant and then complain when they ignored the fact that you're pregnant.
These people didn't see that they were expendable when they signed up? Go get another job.
why did obscenely rich bosses fire 12,000 of the workers who made them obscenely rich? because they can, & itll make them even richer. thats the problem
It's because they over hired tons of workers. Those workers did not necessarily make them "obscenely rich", the original google workers did that. If these workers were making them so rich why would they fire them? Just critically think.
There's no such thing as ethical capitalism. It's an oxymoron.
The pregnant woman who is the main speaker seems to have no concept of what it means to work for for-profit company, or to work for anyone else, for that matter. Google might be turning a huge profit, but maybe they need to invest that capital in some other way that will allow them to exist in the future. If you want a say in whether or not you have a job tomorrow, work for yourself.
Well google people - the best way to get back is to end censorship! The same people who stomp on the public are stomping on you.
Very important journalism, thank you
I'm switching to all Chinese brands that don't support Google, no regrets, and they don't charge nearly as much for the same quality.
Yeah because China treats all their factory workers humanely.
All people are all of the same worth. Workers are not commodities, they are human being with lives, kids, home and needs.
What is needed is a national strike and blocking police from preventing the strike.
WAH WAH WAHHHHHHH...
oh no....any ways
Thanks BTN, for bringing this to people's attention. The sacked workers and their union had far too many smiles on their faces for them to be taken seriously. Not until every single employee of Google and the employees of as many other major exploiters unite for the sole purpose of downing their tools, their keyboards and saying enough is enough, will their profit crazed owners take any notice.
Googlers all got a lavish severance package of 8 months pay, all stocks vested, and the longer they worked at Google the more severance they got. Layoffs suck but honestly these Googlers are not the worst off
8 months severance getting a salary many multiples of the median worker's equivalent yearly wage
Tech workers are not over paid by any means. The average worker is under paid. The reason why we make so much is that our jobs are genuinely difficult, hard to fill and we generate a lot of profit for the companies we work for. Don't be fooled.
Solidarity with the People Living Under Bridges Union!✊
@@cprogrck how many of these 'tech' companies actually turn a profit? how many of them produce something that is actually useful (or not actively harmful)? how many companies are actually just vehicles for financial speculation?
the culture of 'tech' is saturated in the worst utopian capitalist ideology and their employees have benefited greatly from investment (speculation) in the industry. at the end of the day who do you think they are most likely to side with in a class conflict? why focus on this tiny group when the vast majority of the population has much greater material interest to organize?
@@nullptr472 While it's true that tech companies are awful so are other companies. I don't think that it's fair to single out tech workers because we've benefited more than others in some ways. Some of us get it and some of us don't. It's the same in any industry. I will say though that things aren't as rosy as you think they are in the tech industry.
Lesson to be learned: Don’t tell your employer that you just became pregnant.
"Having a strong union means the company does not get to make decisions about layoffs without consulting their workers".
This was the situation in Denmark, where I'm from, until the mid-90s. Around that time, a major agreement was made between the labor unions, the employers' associations and the government that going forward, employers had the full right to allocate work, and hire and fire workers at their behest. In return, the state would ensure a strong social safety net so workers losing their jobs had immediate access to unemployment insurance (up to 90% of previous salary) and training opportunities. And that's basically where we are today.
Sure. Build your military duffus. We in the US are tired of paying for your security while you live comfortable in your bubble
@@disel4life Irrelevant comment.

Googles CFO isn’t looking at last quarters profit, her mind is five years down the road. Something these kids will never understand…

Well if your services are not used anymore.
Its a business no job is guaranteed sorry thats not how the world works
seriously, Google employees have a union?
Wtf why should they care??
Tough world isn't it
AI will replace the little people including the workers who created it.
Say Goodbye to any Google innovation. All the smart people will look/ go elsewhere now. Shot itself in the foot.

Welcome to the real world...
@Benjamin Eby maybe this will open their eyes, they are still comrades while being ignorant until it affects them. Everything is going according to capitalism
The tech industry experiences on average of 15-20% turn over per annum, consistently for 20+ years. The market is way down, global competition has heated up. A business needs to shed its weak links. Chances are this is the bottom 6% of valuable productive workers. Why is this being cried about in 2023??!
Find new job! No one should care about you making 100k salary. Welcome to the working class 🎉
This is why elon musk fired like half of twitter because they weren't producing but gets paid high salaries.
Its all POLITICS!✋
We are all a spoke in a big wheel. No matter how much, "value", we bring, or perceived to bring, in many states, such as CA, there is what is known as, "at will", employee. Many may have not done anything wrong, but one can be let go without cause or reason too.
We all have to understand just at least that concept. The politics and economics behind why a company does what they are doing to whomever is none of my business. If a company doesn't want me anymore, sure, I would be shocked, sad, and all the mixed feelings in there.
In the end, do not pout, and move on. The best way to help companies realize that perhaps letting you go was a mistake, is by moving on to another company, and excelling, or better yet, start your own.
Part of the message the former employees say outside the headquarters, I partly sympathize. But the other aspect is that those former employees just end up validating why they were let go in the first place.
Karma
smartphone? Google steal from Apple , come on!!!
Essential my ass.
All this whining and no mention of the severance packages they may have gotten. Something people at normal jobs have no expectation of.
Learn to weld bro….day in the life a google employee would show you the waste of these employees actually are.
When you're bottom line is profit.
Hown is anyone surprised.
As a monopoly, where do you go for an alternative to google? This platform, RUclips, is owned by google. Google is the foundation of the modern 21st century dystopia we all are forced to suffer.
getting layed off in the tech world is nothing new,

Remember how giving away the Titanic ending was taboo? Well....pale faces, you lose, but you feel it and know it better than I. Hasta nunca.
Pink haired union reps? Hmm.
Laid off during breakfast on-site? Hmm.
Core employees no doubt.

This why I use ad block, fuck google
do you hear that? it's the sound of the world's smallest violin playing in support of the alphabet 'workers' union
It's probably the worst corp union but tech workers will play a role in changing things
She acts like Google got her pregnant. Does she want child support from Google?
You love AI. So, you got fired.
Everyone just quite the same let them suffering than they talk......!!!!!!!!
Lern to roof.
Come on snowflakes! I was laid-off when I got 3 women pregant at the same time.
Boohoo. Being locked out after getting laid off is security protocol. Also, im sure they can get another job so they need to stop whining
work under hindian will be like this, HA HA HA
I use duck duck go
😂😂😂😂🤣🤣😂😂
Can't they at least speak without written notes or speech made for them? Probably by someone. The redshirt woman is like reading stories off of Reddit. I mean if something happens to me I speak from my experience not from some notes made overnight.
It's really hard sympathizing with these Google layoff check collectors known as employees... They had a very easy and soft life and I hope they can get use to working like the rest of society but I doubt it... Working without free food and drinks and no games or sleep pods to rest in... Yeah work for these tender former check collectors won't be easy so... Welcome to the real world... Once you were hardly working NOW you'll have to work HARDER
Annnnd this is why jobs go to China...or at least they did.

People like you don’t even know you’re getting exploited. If you lived in ANY other developed country, or even some developing countries, you would see how it’s possible for human societies to support and invest in their people for greater happiness and productivity. The capitalists don’t need all that money to survive, their employees do. Americans almost deserve stagnant wages for the past 30 years and increasing homelessness for their ignorance and arrogance.
