That was a solid 17 second post at the end! Really cool, Jackson has lungs for days. Also, a small detail that I find endearing is how at the four minute mark, you can hear Jackson humming the note to carry over into the next section (I'm sure there's a professional expression for that, sorry) to himself, and not looking very happy (which might be part of the performance). He then starts looking over to Jake and checks back with him. Jack corrects to almost a half-tone higher, and they go with that. I just - I don't know, it's so lovely, the whole unspoken conversation and mutual trust: "Hey, Jake, I'm not sure that my note is good, what do you say?" - "Up." - "Great, thanks." - "I gotcha, friend."
I noticed that exchange also, I thought maybe it was a part where resuming had been more vulnerable in rehearsal so they felt it was worth the more explicit tune-up(?) Coming back on a solid chord after one of those comedic interludes would be no walk in the park
As far as I can tell, Jackson gets the interval right from where he leaves off. Perhaps there was an issue in the sense that in order to tune the chord they leave off on correctly, Jackson would need to be slightly flat. That maybe (?) meant that he would be flat in providing the new note. In order to come back in the same key, it was decided that Jake would then fix the note by raising the note a little. Unless Jake has perfect pitch (?), I can't think of another way in which this would be possible in an unplanned way. If it was easier for Jake or Jake has perfect pitch, the job of keeping the note would be just given to Jake, since the patter was mainly handled by the others. Someone who knows more about barbershop might be able to confirm whether this kind of thing is ever done.
this feels like a new NF4. I can see why they finally medal'd! everything was 100% locked. every joke landed. and holy cow Jackson sounded like he was putting on a masterclass in vocal technique, he was so light yet so clear!
Oh my gosh I LITERALLY had this exact same though, then found myself comparing their voices, and then became angry that you can't really compare their ability because they're both top-notch so all that's left is Ryan's pure tone vs. Marcus' more pop tone but really, that's immaterial for solo singing so here I am, bitter that I can't be a little bitter any more because 4:30 won me over, too haha
I was literally constant stank face when ryan left and they came back with marcus. He has won me over so much. This was incredible and im here for it!!
One of my favorite things about the NF4 which is really highlighted in their semifinals set is just how incredible every single one of them are individually as singers. Lots of BHS members are amazing choir/quartet singers, with perfect pitch and tight harmonies, but not a lot of them are people I’d want to listen to sing a whole song by themselves. I would buy an entire album of ANY of these guys put out in a heartbeat. Joey gives me all the musical theater vibes, Marcus has such a cool tone, and Jake could probably top the county charts if he wanted to. Jackson is an incredible lead, of course, but also switches so effortlessly into the other guys parts when needed. Not a lot of quartets can (or will?) feature everyones voices like that (the most I can really think of is a single line for the tenor or bass to go ‘look how low/high I can go’) but it gives their songs so much more depth and character. I know the mark of a lot of ‘good’ quartets is having such locked in chords you can’t tell who’s singing what, but I truly think the NF4 really leaned into their strengths since adding Marcus and bringing in some of these more unique arrangements the last few years. The overlapping, the switches, the beatboxing, and of course their jokes were as good as ever. I'll be playing this one on repeat until the finals set comes out!
All the comments about the voices, and harmonies, and jokes are spot on, absolutely, but what really impresses me is how comfortable these four have gotten in their own skins. Prior years, they always seemed a bit stiff, like they were having to concentrate just a bit too much on combining the music, comedy, and choreography. This year you can really tell they’re loose and just really having fun. Gotta love it; looking forward to what’s next.
It's so good! They really improve over the years. I also appreciate that most of the jokes here are sung. The piece is less cut with breaks and improves the flow. Also, is Jackson telling the other to accelerate during the post? He makes a sign like "move on guys".
NF4 is keeping up their record of amazing baritone singers. Ryan had an angelic voice whenever he got to solo. Now Marcus's bit in this song is probably my favourite part (after the throwback joke of course) 4:30 if anyone wants a replay. I know I do!
I'm honestly surprised this didn't get a higher singing score. It might just be a difference between the video and in-person, but the harmony and tone stood out to me for this song.
I agree. I played it over and over trying to pick why it would not have scored higher in singing. Seemed to me (as you say, video v. live perhaps?) their whole semis set should have scored equally well or better than the quarterfinals
At 5:15 or 5:16, it looks like Jackson calls for the shorter ending. Could'a fooled me that he needed that. Nice solid post all the way through. Great song!
