Well, there was a miniseries where The Metal Men were converted into deadly metals and became the Death Metal Men. There's also the Gas Gang (robots made of gasses), the Metal Women (the same metals as the Metal Men but the opposite genders), and The Metal Mammals (robots made of gasses in animal form, although some of them were not mammals).

Just rewatched this video after watching the new episode of Creature Commandes.
Looks like we're getting the metal man in DCU.
And I'm all here for it. 🎉🎉🎉

They would really work well as an animated project.

I've always thought the Metal Men were a super underrated team that had a lot of potential to explore complex themes about the beauty of life, whether a machine can understand human emotions on a deeper level, and the concept of family and love in a way that could be refreshing and unique to see. There's a lot of room to make these characters into a compelling superhero team in the DC Universe. I wish more adaptations could explore the Metal Men on a whole other deeper level. I actually have this pitch idea for a Metal Men animated series with some ideas I had to dive into these characters.

Completely agree. There's so much potential yet to be explored with them.

DC recently a miniseries featuring The Metal Men (collected in the trade paperback "Elements of Change") where they revealed the truth about The Metal Men: Their emotions are based on Doc's own, with each of them taking on a major aspect of Doc's personality (such as Mercury's anger, and Tin's lack of confidence), while Tina was based on a woman who Doc stalked in College (in the words of the woman "Simply put, he made you because he couldn't have me."). Unfortunately, it seemed that Doc wasn't able to give them true sentience.
Finally, the truth was revealed: The reason that The Metal Men weren't sentient was that Doc hadn't fully turned on their responsometers. Once that was done The Metal Men truly became alive, with a more balanced set of full emotions and able to function better than before (four of them were able to easily take down Chemo). It also changed the nature of The Metal Men: Their responsometers merged with their metal, becoming a part of it and due to that they can't be rebuilt if they are killed.

Early in his career, Walt Simonson did amazing things with the Metal Men

I strongly agree! Although Simonson kept them true to their original look, he took it in a terrific direction. I think he is the best artist to ever draw The Metal Men, although Shane Davis (the artist in the recent miniseries) did a terrific job too.

I’ve never been a big fan of the Metal Men because they’re very tropey. I like Doc Magnus because of his role in Grant Morrison’s Doom Patrol, but this video made me appreciate the team a lot more.

Doc Magnus was associated with the Doom Patrol in the late 1970s. After the death of the Doom Patrol in their own comic, in Showcase #94 they revealed that Robotman survived the explosion that killed The Doom Patrol. Doc Magnus found what remained of Robotman's body (his intact head and part of his upper body) and rebuilt him, giving him a more robotic form. Robotman then joined other heroes (Celsius, Tempest, and Negative Woman) to form the new Doom Patrol. Later, Robotman had his body modified to resemble his original body.
