Now, Torts says it's not about systems. Well, if this team lacks high end skilled players, the best thing to do would be play a tight defensive system as a foundation. Just having 2 guys who fight isn't playing tough. Puck control, TOP, and helping Hart would be the result of better systems. The only thing he's done so far is have a decent PK. Move on. Frank...too many Ex-Flyers in the Front Office who have no business being there (Drafting/Scouting/Player Development, to name a few categories) is the main reason where this franchise is where they are right now. The above positions have an immediate impact on this club, and need to be filled by competent executives who know how to run a franchise...not run a franchise into the ground (which they've excelled in).
And, something else no one wants to address...there is no accountability from any ex-Flyer (in the Front Office) who never have to answer for their shortcomings (their track record over the past 10+ years speaks volumes). Torts will have to, though. Those Drones in the Front Office aren't going anywhere.
There is something definitely wrong when our draft picks literally don't belong on the ice when they're called up, yet the Pens can call up their picks from their affiliates...and they almost always have an immediate impact helping their team. The Flyers currently have No One who can shoulder that responsibility.
And hiring (another ex-Flyer) Danny Briere for the GM position won't help, either (after the train-wreck that Chuck will be handing-off to him).
Quite sad how this once-proud franchise is now nothing more than an afterthought in the Philly sports scene.

      @PS-gr5wh 2 года назад +1

Have to disagree on a few things here. First anytime people say oh you can't win with ex flyers in front office or as coaches or gm is just min bogglingly stupid. Berube won a cup. Hexy won cups in LA and has Pittsburg looking good. I think Danny Brierre would make an excellent GM. I think bringing in Chuck Fletcher was the worst thing this organization ever did. The Torts thing is tricky. It sucks that he's going to improve the team enough to not have them in contention for Bedard. But maybe we'll just get lucky with the injuries lol. We did need a culture change. Would have been nice if we could have just let that wait one more year before we made the move.

@@PS-gr5wh Sticking to the old boys' club is a recipe for disaster. Just because you won a cup or two doesn't make you a lock for some management or coaching position. If that were the case, Gretz should've brought a cup to Arizona. Truth is that plugs who spend most of the time on the bench watching the game generally succeed more after their on-ice careers are over.

    • @bloke_19xx33

@@PS-gr5wh Funny..the ex-Flyers you mentioned (Hexy, Berube) won Cups AFTER leaving the Flyers. In fact, practically every ex-Flyer who leaves the Flyers (ex. Rick Tocchet, Kjell Samuelsson, Rod Brindamour, Brayden Schenn, Ruslav Fedeotenko, just to name a few...there are several others) have won Cups elsewhere.
That’s what happens with teams who are built for todays NHL…the Flyers are stuck in the past, and aren’t built like that…and their history shows that.
Hexy was an assistant GM in LA, when he won the Cup, and didn't build that team on his own. You make it sound like that he was the sole reason that LA won the Cup...not even close to being accurate.
We haven't won with Ex-Flyers in the Front Office now over the past 10+ years (who oversee Drafting, Scouting, and Player Development), and you can honestly say that with their horrendous draft record and trades during that time that the current state of this team is ok? Should we give them another 10 years to fix things? Dude, you really sound like you're in denial, and that everything with this team will improve overnight. We''ll get it right next year? Don't hold your breath. Can't wait for Ryan Ellis to return and help get us 'back on track'.
Torts was only hired to 'shield' the Front office from their incompetence and mismanagement...although he is the only one there holding anyone accountable. It was a 'deflection' hire to take the 'heat' away from the Front Office, and not put the spotlight on that idiot GM (who also oversees the Training and Medical Staff, whose record also speaks for itself) and his minions, who have gotten way too comfortable in the Front office. I'm surprised you don't see that.
Danny Briere would make an excellent GM...but not here. Do you really think that the likes of Bob Clarke and Paul Holmgren are going to give him 'free-reign' over the team, with their constant meddling and bickering? Briere will eventually find out that he doesn't have as much control as he thought he would have; he'll eventually leave, and build a winner elsewhere. That seems to be the trend with this team.
You are right about needing '...a culture change...'. Let's start by revamping the Front Office, and hire people who know the business side of hockey and how to manage the salary cap (Bob Clarke knew neither).
Oh, one more thing...Hexy didn't build that team in Pittsburgh. He inherited it (but will get all the credit and glory if the Pens win it all this year). There are already grumblings in Pittsburgh how he's quickly making a mess of things. He'll leave his stamp on that team...just like every ex-Flyer in the Front Office is currently doing (who really aren't leaving anytime soon).

@@PS-gr5wh Excellent post. Only thing I'd quibble with is Tortorella being a "tricky" hire. I get what you mean, my quibble is that because of the lottery you don't get much better than a 20% chance of the #1 pick - and that's if you finish dead last. There's not a huge difference btw last and 4th, 5th or 6th from last. Better odds sure but not much better. Therefore I think the benefit of what Tortorella brings outweighs the (slightly) diminished odds the Flyers will probably have of drafting first.

@@PS-gr5wh Berube walked into a great roster built by Dave Taylor before he got to the Blues. Great coaching, but that was a moment with a tight roster. Berube since? Mediocre.
In L.A., Hexy was NOT responsible for that...Dave Taylor drafted the best players and handed it off to Lombardi as GM who made the trades and signings that put them over the top.
And Hexy got a team in Pitts with Crosby and Malkin...come on.
Dig deeper if you want to make comments like. The guys you think are so good were FIRED by this organization for results. And those results were poor because of the front office, scouts, and decisions made that left us with 1 star in 15 years and overall a roster and AHL system devoid of high end talent.

2014: Travis Sanheim- Midling Defenceman as of right now.
2015: Ivan Provorov- Top pair guy if you have a top pair guy to play with him. Travis Konecny- Was looking like a win up until he got hurt.
    2016: German Rubstov- Bust
2017: Nolan Patrick- Feel bad for him with the injuries but he wasn't exactly lighting the lamp when healthy. Morgan Frost- Not looking good most likely a bust.

Can't blame Hexy on the state of this franchise, though his picks didn't all turn out, he had us with allot of Cap space, and he was building from within, and we still had talent in G and Coots and company, the injuries and personal GM style that got him fired caused this organization to spiral, though prior to the bubble Vegas had us winning the Cup and we sure were playing like it and Fletcher gave thanks to Hexy for the position he put him in. The one to blame is ownership. Hexy was rolling dice on draft picks, had he stayed we would of still kept acquiring draft picks while building from within. That would of been a better situation then we are in now, No draft picks and no top talent and against the Cap.
The Hackstol situation is a head scratcher though, an experiment that should of been cut short but personal reasons did him in, I would of taken Torts instead of Hackstol and that would of been a better position to have been in.

Though Hexy might not of been popular his plan would of still afforded us to have cap space and continue to develop until we hit on our picks. Now we have nothing and are worse off. Well yeah bottom line is we need new ownership

Ron's draft picks were mostly midling to terrible. Chuck has made questionable signings, trades, and overpayments. A perfect storm for disaster. I just see the draft choices as the main culprit of this mess. With the hard cap you have to have more hits than misses. @vinoewhines 2 года назад

@@rts7067 Drafting well and hitting on your picks was exactly Hexy's philosophy as well, he even went on to say that getting extra picks was also as important so that you'd have a better chance at hitting it out of the park. We were picking at 15-20 in the first round so that is harder to strike gold when picking out of the top 5. His one high draft pick unfortunately had ancillary health issues and with migraines and concussion. His(Nolan P.) previous pre draft ailment was cleared as not problematic. Unfortunately that didn't go as planned and he was Drafting players that showed skill but more importantly had a right mindset and work ethic. That's a tall order but for building from with in and then acquiring outside talent is the way to build in a cap unfriendly league but I can see you wanting to spread the blame around and Hexy didn't per-fect' his choices but his errors would of at least kept us still in the green and not the red that we are in now. Ownership is now the biggest culprit, then the GM for overpaying asset wise and cap management/term

Snyder was "product on ice" oriented. Comcast is "profit sheet" oriented. Fletcher is a "yes man" clueless puppet. Torts is in a tough spot. Over half the ideal starting lines are out injured, some could be season-ending. The starting lines now are made up of players other teams would be doubtful to even have as 4th liners or keep on their AHL squads. PowerPlay & PenaltyKill are among the league's worst. The 5 on 5 roster is lucky to get a draw, if the goalie stands on his head. He'll be lucky to stay healthy. If they make 1 turnover or penalty, they're toast. That's how perfect they have to be. Up against the salary cap limit so no good talent can be acquired, only waiver wire garbage castoffs from other teams. No quality drafted prospects currently in the farm system will be coming for about 3 more years. Only underachievers & oft-injured retreads. No free agents want to come here because 1) there's no money available & 2) the ownership is so dysfunctional. A beautiful arena & a passionate fan base going to waste. I’m a flyers fan this is my opinion fire torts or keep him and trade deangleo seeler people like that and just good draft picks good draft picks that’s all that they need and torts isn’t made for this team at the start i thought would make it to the 1st round 11 STRAIGHT loses! They have good players it just trade for draft picks and restart koncey provorov all of them needed to be traded

So your plan is to fire torts or keep him????. Wow. Got to love that kind of strategy. They lost 10 in a row by the way.

Bad GM’s from the glory days, bad scouting, bad draft picks ,bad coaching, losing your Mo Jo , ….Where’s the bulldog in the franchise to bring scorers in….the fans are tired of defensive has beens in free agency…so the answer, keep Tortorella, keep the fans…get rid of the ownership,GM,scouts and all pictures of old flyers, plus change up the uniform…bring in smart hockey people from Tampa Bay,maybe…

They tore it down 10 years ago, fired holmgren, hired hextall. Horrendous drafting followed. Not only did they choose players with marginal stick talent but also marginal skating ability and worst of all, absolutely and shockingly NO testosterone. The softest group of kids they could find. I mean, couturier and provorov are the jewels of that era. Wow. Koneckny is the only player I won't bash but if he had only been 25 pounds heavier and 3 inches taller. They sadly all must go and that in itself is a long process with bad contracts. Then they have to re draft. And this mess can happen all over again, there's no guarantees. 1 thing I hope is that they choose players who are big enough, strong enough to withstand the pounding of the NHL. This team was constructed of boys too small to withstand the pounding. It's not pretty. This year they drafted size finally. A few more years and perhaps it'll show results.

same here, you cant bottom out and expect things to change, look at the hurricanes, they didnt bottom out and they make the playoffs the last few years, it's about having an identity and culture. i think fans and media have really overlooked that, to them it's about hyping best players in the draft and not focusing on building a culture and philosophy of beating teams. that's why torts was hired.

Ed Snider blah blah blah. This team sucked under Snider for many years. Those 70s cups were a long time ago. Snider drove this team into the ground with his long held reluctance to move on from the bully days. He was behind getting rid of Bobrobski and signing Bryz to a mega contract. He signed off on trading away Forsberg and half a team for 88. And he had Sarah Palin drop the puck to start a season. Ok the last point is not relevant to the team, but it was a bozo move. And most importantly, he let the team fall into the hands of Comcast instead of finding a better suited owner group.
Agreed 100% though that Comcast has to sell to a more involved entity. Too bad we missed the Fenway Group when they were looking.

The NHL sucks. Every team is exactly the same. If you watch Philly vs. NYR the game is played exactly the same as if Edmonton were playing Vancouver. None of the teams have personality. Before, if you watched Philly vs. NYR, you were going to see a very different game than if you watched Edmonton vs. Vancouver. And, expansion absolutely watered the league down. Several players in the bottom six on a lot of teams are not NHL caliber players. All of the rule changes have led to one thing, and one thing only: conformity. Put a fork in this league. NHL sucks.
