TRUTH BEHIND DEADLY ACCIDENT on Movie Set! Exclusive Interviews! Roy Rogers & Dan White! Westerns!

  • Accidents on movie sets are sometimes deadly. More often, they are not. Roy Rogers,
King of the Cowboys, recalls for fledgling reporter Rob Word in 1971, his only close call.
It was with stunt legend Yakima Canutt. Roy's term "bending whiskers" is an apt
description of the event. Veteran character actor, Florida born Dan White (1908-1980)
joined Word in 1977 for the first Mid Florida Western Film Festival and described being on
location during the filming of the 1945 serial "The Royal Mounted Rides Again," and
witnessing a freak horse accident and the death of B western star Jack Randall (1906-
1945) by a heart attack. Also included is a color presentation and Cowboy Prayer with Roy done for movie theaters and The Rogers Riders Club.

Ever since getting hooked on this site a few months ago, I'm finding that there ARE quite a few channels that show westerns. However, most of them just throw any ol' thing in any ol' condition up on the screen. It's obvious that Rob really cares about this stuff. And he does his homework, as you can see in both his written and video intros. I've been tempted to make suggestions on films to show, but haven't done so since he's got this WELL under control.

When you see the heartfelt ROY ROGERS prayer intro and you look at the world now, it's sadly like watching something from another planet...
With every passing day it seems like WESTERNS more than any other film genre are a fast-fading reminder of how simple and hopeful the American way of life used to be. Once upon a time they were the very best ambassador of American values to the world... you had role models and morals, even if they were all just an illusion.
As for DAN WHITE... we sure saw a lot of him in scores of westerns, and he was right to turn down the bartender role in GUNSMOKE, because "Sam the bartender" did not get to work too regular as you might think, as Dan's good friend Glen Strange found out after he had recommended him.
Dan always with his squinty eyes and disposition looked older than he was, and seeing as he favored Florida, he must've loved being on location there for DISTANT DRUMS, which was the very picture known for the Wilhelm Scream sound effect that so many films have used since when a man yells out when killed.
Safety on the set... as Dan witnessed three deaths in his career that were just accidents, it begs belief that what happen recently with actor/producer Alec Baldwin and the total criminal negligence of allowing hundreds of rounds of live ammo on a movie set and mixing them up with blanks... and all because multi-billion dollar Netflix hired cheap and cut corners on safety.
Not since the infamous TWILIGHT ZONE movie "accident" that was clearly a case of a reckless director John Landis being guilty, but scapegoat crew members took the blame... but on RUST the so-called 'armorer' who incorrectly loaded the gun, plus other prior 'mistakes' with safety on the same production, well it wouldn't have happened in Roy and Dan's day would it?
Just think of the millions of blank rounds fired off on well over 10,000 or more westerns in the last 100 years without a single incident like that?
Sadly, along with all the grief that "accident" has caused, I also feel sorry for a dear friend who owns the location the Bonanza Creek Ranch where so many westerns have been shot without any trouble. Her beautiful movie ranch is going to be tainted for quite a while.
I know it's getting harder for Rob having to reach back for material to produce a show with all the COVID restraints of new in-person interviews on stage, but he skillfully overcomes that hurdle... now that's dedication for what he truly loves doing so well!

    • @grahamhill6340
      @grahamhill6340 2 года назад

@@jpbirdie11 I spent 40 years on HOLLYWOOD sets... and bringing live ammo to a set is like bringing nitro and C4 high explosives to a Fourth of July fireworks gathering!
Like I've said so often, talking about westerns and what they taught and what they mean to us, with all that is going on now under the guise of COVIDism... you just feel and realize with each passing day that we're in an 1970s apocalyptic SCI-FI movie like SOYLENT GREEN meets THE OMEGA MAN and Roy, Gene, the Duke and the whole charging 7th cavalry are not going to save us from how life has become so humanoid and totally controlled... and where the very mention of the "land of the free and the brave" is now regarded as hate speech!
As for the "Cowboy Code" -well that evaporated for many when they got sent to Vietnam!
Thank you for your comment JP

Well, another interesting episode. It is the unanticipated and unplanned, that result in injuries or death in all professions, Movie's are no different. How many times while performing stunts has something happened that could have led to severe injury or death, but didn't. These scenes or parts thereof were subsequently used in the production, because they added the real world danger to the make believe danger. Those scenes then make great interview fodder for this show.

I lived in Apple Valley and worked on Roy Rogers house and Ranch twice once for a month and once for six and a half weeks. It was in the mid-80s we did a big remodel on his house and went back and did a remodel on the barn actually put air conditioning in his horse barn for his horses. Him and Dale were very nice people I got to know them one time I went to a restaurant Sunday morning for breakfast after church my daughter was just born my grandma lives there and Dale Evans came in with a group of ladies and I said hey there still haven't my grandma was freaking out. So I went over and ask Dale if she would come over and say hi to my grandma and she said absolutely my grandma to her dying days and that was the highlight of her life. Roy's oldest son Roy Rogers Jr had a country band in his stage name was Dusty Rhodes he ended up selling the museum in Apple Valley and moving it to Branson where I had moved in the late 90s I met up with him again and talk to him a little bit I just wanted to pass that story on to everybody.

@@AWordonWesterns thank you for the response I would like to tell you I love your show your interviews everything about westerns and you because and now 60 years old. I have a yearning to watch every old western there ever was and right now I have DirecTV. I get all the channels that show all the old westerns and I record every one of them Gunsmoke Have Gun Will Travel Laramie Wagon Train Ride the list goes on and on I record every one of them. So when I get ready to watch them I can just fast-forward through the commercials. It is the only thing I watch on television I'm so enthralled of old westerns and the stories about them the actors when they were born where they were born and your show and all the interviews. I haven't a clue what's on network television these days I don't watch any of it I only watch old western because it's the only thing that entertains me. Me checking out the shows and everything I can find about him isn't enough. It's your word on westerns that caps it off because you have all the inside knowledge and I love the interviews with all the old Stars. I have to say my favorite is James Arness and John Payne. I love John Diane because of the moral messages that every show comes around to tell people. The shame was Gunsmoke. Richard Boone in Have Gun Will Travel is absolute Jewel. All I can say is thank you for your shoulders it means a lot to me to listen to the interviews thank you very much.

Maybe you had recent events in mind when you posted this; if not it’s just me not being able to keep myself from thinking about them. Sometimes “shit happens”.

What's funny about western movies when they're fighting they always make sure they picked the guy up before they hit him none of this ground-and-pound and just beat the hell out of the guys sit on top of them like MMA know they have to pick the guy up and hit it and if he don't get up that's considered the fight is over.

It was last Monday at my house with Elizabeth Dennehy. Yep, that was my living room. It's become much easier to get talent when I can be more flexible with the taping so I have stopped doing interviews at the Autry. It was a wonderful 10 years there with such fantastic guests and wonderful audience interaction. But I want to keep doing it so have adjusted to continue by doing interviews on location around my guests schedules.
