  • Actions begin with thoughts. Without proper thinking, you can't expect to conduct yourself properly. Bushido's writers spent a lot of ink describing the type of mind a man of purpose needs to have: a selfless mind, a calm mind and so on. A man's purpose is to serve others and the cultivate his mind so he can do that service well. This means developing quietude, discipline, flexibility, peacefulness, and, above all, love. In order to develop the mind, a man must read and put what he reads into practice. He must train his body and his pen; swordsmanship is poetry and poetry is swordsmanship. A man who doesn't read and learn and practice is no man at all from Bushido's perspective.
