CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The bald bear terrorizes Chet (John Candy) and the others, till Wally (Robert Prosky) arrives with his shotgun lamp.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In the John Hughes-scripted The Great Outdoors, John Candy stars as Chet Ripley, an oafish paterfamilias who takes his family on a vacation at a lakeside resort. Their enjoyment is seriously compromised when brother-in-law Roman Craig (Dan Aykroyd) shows up with his wife and kiddies. The rest of the film is an ongoing war between Ripley's carefree aggregation and Craig's obnoxiously prissy brood, and making things worse, a driving rainstorm forces both families to remain under one roof well-past their threshold of patience. Annette Bening makes her film debut as Aykroyd's ill-tempered wife.

I like how John Candy takes the time to fix the door while a rampaging bear is going after his family. 🤣
Only for it to be knocked down by Wally coming in with his shotgun.
‘That’s a god dam lamp’ 😂😂
I wish they’d make more movies like these. Nothing beats a good 80s movie
But it's loaded!
@@nathanmiller8213 you beat me do it!
Thats a god damn lamp!

Yes your right rip jc
I hate it when people use the lord's name in vain.
The bear was actually screaming and crying 😂😂😂😂😂
All these years later, I still bust up laughing at this scene. I miss John Candy, one of favorites gone too soon.
i still laught too it
I love how he's saying "uncle, uncle..." when the bear is bouncing on him!! 😂😂😂
He's like get off me son of a b****🤣🤣
Haha
bear
i assume u know why ? lol
A few years later, He'd go on to play Uncle Buck.
I like how John Candy decides to put the door back on the hinges before doing anything about the bear 😄😄😄

I saw this in theaters, and after the bear got shot in the butt, I had no idea what happened, or what was said because I and everyone else in the packed theater were laughing our heads off for, like, five minutes!!😆😆😆
I didn't see it in theaters but I saw this scene and was also crying for 5 minutes
I was on a date. Almost died choking on popcorn
Watching this as a kid I was legit crying cause I was laughing so hard

Wonder everyone in theaters sits in when the credit rolls?

That moment when everyone sees the bear’s bald head and realized Chet’s bear story was true... 😆
This is one of the most underrated movies ever made. I freaking love this movie! R.I.P. John Candy.
He was in a few duds. But you watched them for him being kind of an average joe derp.
Robert Prosky and John Hughes too
Also, RIP Dan Aykroyd's sanity.

Wew, if your having as sad time, this will film will certainly take you out of it with laughter ( RIP John Candy, never forgotten ! ).
Damn right on both counts...
RIP to John Candy and Bart the Bear, this scene was the funniest in the movie. You both are missed!
Roman's face at 1:15 is one of the most priceless moments in this film. Dan Aykroyd and John Candy, you just can't beat that. They don't make films like this anymore....the 80's comedies were awesome. I was an 80's child, so I grew up watching films like "The Goonies", "Planes, Trains and Automobiles", "Trading Places", "The Monster Squad", "Back to the Future", "Uncle Buck", "The 'Burbs", "Coming to America" and about 2 dozen others.

You are so so right the 80s straight up ruled! Especially the movies! 🤣😂😍😆
Hell yes to 80s movies. They aren't the same today.
This kind of comedy sucks that’s why they don’t make them like this anymore
@@mrswattskidneys45 no that's today's movies, movies like this were and still are awesome
This is the same bear that they used in The Edge (1997). It’s amazing how he was so goofy and nonthreatening in this movie but was so utterly terrifying in The Edge. Who says animals can’t act?
That bear is portrayed by Bart the Bear.
Bart the bear is such a great actor

RIP Bart the Bear. You were a great actor💙🐻
It's sad as I look back on this part. I felt so bad for the bear being shot in the behind. I use to laugh so hard at this scene. The Bear is in Heaven.
+Brandy W. Yes that's right. After the end credits, the raccoons said that the bear (named Jody for the movie but Bart in real life) got shot and is now bald on both ends.
Brandy W. 2:22-2:28 😆
Is that who the bear was? Good ol Doug Seus.
They trained it well
This was one of Candys best films. The guy could literally go from making you laugh until your cheeks hurt to actually making you feel like crying (especially when talking about his wife in planes, trains and automobiles). He was such a tremendous talent and he is sorely missed!
Mauren O’Hara stated that John Candy was one of the Finest Actors that she was Privileged to work with.
That shotgun lamp...I couldn't stop laughing the first time!!!
I love it how Roman is fighting off the bear by himself as Chet just fixes the door.
These guys and other non-insulting comedians don't realize how precious they are to humanity...

LOL! Poor bear, but this film is such a classic, very underrated. John Candy = Legend forever. :D
Agreed. One of his better films. It is funny that most of John Candy's best films are underrated. His best was Uncle Buck and that was very underrated. So was Summer Rental another great movie. His more well known films such as Splash and Armed and Dangerous didn't come off as strong for me even though they were very popular movies. He was also in Home Alone, but only had a small part there. Another great film he had a small part in was Heavy Metal, in which he provided a voice for a few of the animated characters in that movie. Again, big movie, but he had a small part in it. John Candy was a my favorite comedic actor and he was also the first actor where I got very upset when he passed. Something about the guy and his personality just struck a chord with me and he is a person I will never forget...ever. Next in line is Robin Williams, he was my second favorite comedic actor and yes, I was upset with his passing too.

“What the hell you doing with that it’s a goddamn lamp, but it’s loaded”😂😂
Best line in the movie lmfao 🤣
He came in hot with a loaded lamp
This is probably the John Candy performance I remember most. When I was a kid the whole “big bear chase” winded line slayed me and it still does.
Don't forget "Uncle Buck"
I love how the bear looks behind him as he runs away.
no
+Elise Haghgoo I was thinking that too and how funny it was at 2:31 like he probably looked at John Candy like the bear was saying "that's the second time you shot me, I will be back for revenge once I heal up, especially for making me bald in two places." But I know the bear ran back to his river hole to heal up. Read more Show less
I miss John Candy he was a great actor.
Big Bear chase me!!!!! Pure comedy gold right there, period. Candy is/was a very underrated as an actor in my opinion.
This has got to be one of the funniest scenes in cinema history :D
This kills me!!! When we were kids- my brother and I were able to pause it right on the bare (bear) butt- which is not an easy task with a vcr! This still cracks me up!

RIP John Candy
I loose it everytime when I see Roman's face when the bear stands up. Hilarious
+Lauren Brooks Yes that was funny. The look on Roman's face was like he was thinking "that's a big bear." Roman should have put his arms up in the arm to scare the bear which would work I'm sure.
John Candy has to be the best comedian ever!
Ray Stanz vs the bear. Every time that bear roars it sounded exactly like the terror dogs.
Oh my god this is the greatest comment of all time
Now it’s the bald-headed, bare-assed killer bear of Claire County. LOL.

2:22 ooops!!!
See at 1:23 when Kate says, "Hit him with the poker", it's just her and the twin girls, but at 1:25, the boy Ben has appeared suddenly from nowhere!
I love when he puts the door back up!😂

2:22 lol best part!
Absolutely. Best part of the whole movie in fact. I remember the first time I seen it, I rolled of the couch laughing and got stuck between the couch and the coffee table on the floor. I was laughing while the bear was howling. GREAT movie! But then again I liked all of John Candy's movies. Uncle Buck was his best.

"Well that was A Trip to the Moon."

This scene never fails to make me laugh. Generations today won’t understand how awesome it was to watch these kinds of movies. Such a shame they don’t make them like these anymore due to “appropriate audiences.”
ok boomer. I wonder when I'll be like, "Oh yeah, movies from the 2000s, they don't make 'em like they used to, you damn kids don't know how good you have it while also paradoxically having it worse than my nostalgia-blind past"
@@WisteriaDrakethis wasn’t 2000’s. This was like 15 years before.
@@priuskiller426Try reading a comment before you reply to it. If you did so, you might have noticed that I said "I wonder when I'll be like [that]". I'm not saying that this movie was made in the 2000s. I was remarking on how dumb it is for older audiences to wax poetic about their rose-tinted past and bemoan how the youth will never have it "that good". I shudder to think that I will be like that some day.
I prefer to think that media only improves, but the majority is going to be copycat or low quality due to the nature of the industry. Overall forward, but two steps back.
What do you mean? You do realize you can still see these movies right? lol
Also, this movie was pretty crappy, the only reason it was watchable was because of Candy's and Akroyd's performances.
