No, you shouldn't skip ANY One Piece arcs

  • Ever since One Piece has been over 100 episodes, people have wanted to know what can be skipped to get the real meat of the story. In Naruto for example, 199 of the 500 episodes are completely skippable. So people want to know what the One Piece equivalent is. And this questions grows in demand as the series' length increases by the hundreds, and as its conclusion gets closer by the year. But at the risk of sounding like an elitist, I propose that nothing can be skipped. Every part of the story adds to the larger story, and to get an abridgement of this odyssey would be to make it not an odyssey.
    Chapters:
    0:00 - Introduction
    1:38 - The Important Parts
    2:14 - Spoiler Threshold
    5:51 - A Sad Tale
7:21 - How I Learned to Stop Agendas and Enjoy One Piece
9:28 - To Those Not Caught Up
    11:30 - Epilogue

That's just silly, especially since we know Moria isn't the One Piece, he's just Raftel reborn in human form and his awakening opens a portal to the Shadow Realm in which One Piece resides. The actual personification of One Piece is Gaimon. Duh. He's a sort of an hologram of the One piece in real world, like a three dimensional shadow of the real thing, which is of course the connection to Moria. The actual chest in which One Piece is, is of course far bigger. Like, I'm talking about 40% bigger. It has to be, since it contains all of the ancient weapons, which are a Colt 1860 revolver (Pluton), a lightly used crowbar (Uranus), and a book detailing 1001 very smart insults (Poseidon). They all similarly have real life counterparts or personifications, like Shirahoshi (Who is referred to as a crybaby - an insult), and Pluton (Similarly referred to as a weapon, like Colt 1860 revolver) and so on. It all makes sense.
But yeah, whoever skips Thriller Bark will be SO confused when they reveal that Wall Zombie was Rocks D. Xebec all along.

When I watched Skypeia, I didn't love it. It was weirdly paced and a dramatic shift in tone and scope. But I have consistently been impressed with just how much it foreshadowed and how much of it set up the parallelism between Luffy and Roger.
It's far from a perfect arc. I hope that The One Piece series and/or the live action does a little bit of pacing tweaking. But I went from "I love One Piece, except Skypeia" to appreciating it in retrospect.

@mollyjoydarle9006 I've been caught up for 15 years and have watched and read repeatedly. I understand "the properties of rubber" is a convenient little inclusion to thinly disguise a glaring retcon. When you say "it foreshadowed so much about Gear 5" and your only evidence to back it up is the word "sun god" was mentioned once in addition to 3 other gods in passing during a flashback that had little to do with the actual plot of Skypiea itself, it doesn't take a genius to see how disingenuous that is.

And now he is leading one of the top 4 crews, but he is still on that adventure to find the One Piece. That hasn't changed. There was always the competition to find it. For as long as one piece is, it really isn’t that long of a read if you don’t do it all in 1 go. You can easily read every arc (except maybe Wano for how dense it gets) in one sitting. That’s like 12-13 sit downs to read to catch up. Spread that out a bit and you can easily do it in a little over a year while reading/watching/doing anything else at the same time. Like I'll see manga readers totally miss that the Charlotte Dectuplets can combine into one giant enemy, or that Kikunojo had a whole fight with Kanjuro. Ngl it even happens to me. I remember a few episodes ago I was like "wait why does Sanji's bounty look like that" because IT'S VERY easy to miss in the manga. Like if you're reading on a phone it's straight up impossible lol.

One of the underrated arcs that has a lot going on under the hood is Whiskey Peak. It's a Lynchian masterpiece IMO. It contains so much symbology. So many odd surreal scenes packed into a single arc. The anime adaptation feels so much different, and I think it's because they didn't pick up on the inspiration. Twin Peaks. An unassuming town with a dark hidden secret. Pay close attention to the the use of negative space used to create a surreal atmosphere. The reveal of the cactus hills still gives me chills when I think about it. Hundreds of thousands of corpses buried all over the island in plain sight, from the moment we arrive. So good.

I just finished watching Thrilled Bark and quite enjoyed it. Somewhere in between I searched the internet to see what other people thought about the arc. And felt weird because they said Thriller Bark wasn't good and some even skipped the arc because nothing happens in the arc. Now I am finished watching and scratching my head because nothing happened they said. Oda name dropped Wano country and Kaido in the arc and gave Zoro his new sward then we got the conformation of Black Beard becoming the 7th warlord, got the news of Ace getting captured a new crewmate Brook was introduced and on top of it Brook was the surviving member of those pirates who left behind Laboon (the whale) in the door of grand line. Yes that very Laboon we saw when Luffy entered grand line, so he connected Thriller Bark with east blue then Kuma appeared and showed his Power and strength, learned about Dr Vegapunk and a beautiful episode of Zoro showing his faith to Luffy and showing his determination, And had the emotional back story of Brook ( the song), then introduced Vivre Card and doing so connected Thriller Bark with Alabasta. Yes surely nothing happened in the Thriller Bark and of course its a solo story not connected to anything else.

Exactly. I could have, if I wanted, made this video about giving reasons why every arc is important. I know enough about the series that I could give for every arc an example of a character that shows up again, or an event that is foreshadowed, or something that explains another thing. But I thought to myself "wait, it's not like Oda wrote Water Seven to explain how Franky joins the crew and explain why Rob Lucci is in a later arc. Oda wrote Water Seven because it's a f**king awesome story, and he wanted to tell it."

A big part of One Piece's mass appeal is the sheer amount of themes and worlds it plays with, there is literally something there for almost everyone.

I'm so glad I didn't skip it, it's easily my favorite arc so far. Even if it doesn't have much relevance to the wider story, I feel that it was at least important for character development. Chopper gets his first big solo W in a fight after feeling like he wasn't as capable as the other strawhats, Robin gets her first full arc to build a bond with the crew and explore her character more. I also felt Noland's backstory was really enjoyable. And to top it all off Enel was a dope ass antagonist that got me excited to see what kind of powers the villains in the next arcs are going to have.

The length of one piece is its biggest strength and weakness. So many people are turned off from the great story because they see how long it is and especially with the anime, if an arc doesn’t sit well it can be a HUGE drag. I felt this way with thriller bark and Fishman island where I wasn't watching to because I was enamored with the story but because I felt I had to. At its best the length is like watching a child grow up to achieve greatness but at its worst it can feel like watchin/reading an infomercial where you only read because you can't move on without it.

I believe alot of new consumers are told about aspects of One Piece, and not the whole package.
If One Piece was a food, I’d say it was a big, hearty stew that’s simmered for hours. I’d do the meal a disservice if I’d recommend it to my friend like: «You like red meat? Dude, you’re going to love the meat in this.» Little do I know that the friend hates carrots, and is allergic to nutmeg.
One Piece is massive, and thus it uses so many different things. Us older fans should therefore be more responsible when recommending the show, and not hype up qualities a new consumer will take ages into the story to experience.
Someone who heard about the awesome fights, and didn’t expect the long lore-dumps will be bored. Someone who heard about the deep, emotional character drama is caught off-guard by all the gags and fan-service. They’re sitting there, waiting for the show to «get good», unaware that that they are seeing important reasons why the show is good.
«What’s the point of LRLL and Foxy?» A splash of something sweet to counter-act the spice. You want something spicier, this may not be for you.

@@da_pikmin_coder8367 You can tell even the writing and animation team is popping off. Prolonging the arc with filler was not an afterthought, they really worked hard on these bits. Some of the best comedy gags of the anime happens here, and it’s not even canon.
Shame so many people hate it, as it’s a sure win on paper and execution: the Strawhats playing goofy games, playing off of their comedic flaws. Nami’s cuttroat attitude being highlighted by the announcer, Sanji winning and losing by the power of simp, Zoro getting lost on a straight path (a favorite), and a cartoon villain with a cunning scheme and severe depression.

My reason for never skipping arcs is a simple yet obvious one, and that's that the more time you spend with these characters the more you'll enjoy the show/manga. In a show centered around its cast, about people chasing their dreams and the lengths they'll go to reach them, and the beauty of how those dreams can bring people together, of course you're not gonna care about Robin's "I want to live" if you didn't care about Nami's "Help me" hundreds of episodes ago, or even worse, skipped it entirely. There's no point to any of it if you don't have any feelings attached to the crew, in my opinion at least.

yes one piece has fights and they are flashy and cool, but isn't it mostly about why they fight? what leads them to rebel and to fight for your friends or those who were kind to you.

Finally caught up last week after starting it about 7-8 months ago, and you are totally right. One Piece was always a show I told myself I'd never watch because it was too long, or too goofy etc. But after giving Live action a chance I was totally hooked on the characters and the world and wanted more. So I started the anime watching 1 or 2 episodes a day aiming mainly just to cover east blue to see the differences. After I finished that my friend who was a fan told me I should watch alabasta so I did. And I grew to love it more. I learned that just enjoying the ride no matter how long it takes was the real way to catch up, its what Luffy would do (He's had shortcuts to getting informationon the one piece a few times now and he's turned it down). I will admit for arcs luke Dressrosa although I really liked the story the pacing did get pretty bad so I went from watching about 10 episodes a day to 1 or 2 until things started picking up again, but I was still enjoying watching the show. And now that I'm caught up I look back at early one piece with nostalgia even though I never grew up with it. Going through the whole journey allowed me to experience emotions that I don't usually get with any other show, like how I cried uncontrollably when the Merry died. Went on for a while now. Just want to say its been an amazing ride watching One Piece and its amazing to be caught up on both the anime and manga now to experience all the really exciting story drops with everyone else.

I really like this video, I remember talking with someone who said they didn't like One Piece despite watching it up to Wano, before mentioning he skipped a number of arcs and it is likely a similar case as with your friend, they forced themselves to continue when they really should have stopped much earlier.
There are definitely pacing issues, no doubt about it, with a lot of padding added, and while I don't fully agree with the way One Pace handles things, I feel they can over correct and get rid of scenes added in the anime that help what is illustrated originally in the manga, I do very much agree with the notion of *taking your time* instead of trying to rush to get to where we are now
I think if I were to recommend watching/reading One Piece to someone now, first things first is watching the first episode (and reading chapter 1-2), if that at least piques their interest, next target would be to finish Arlong Park. If they didn't like it, then it isn't their cup of tea and thank you for trying it out. If they did like it? A new nakama joins us!

Thriller Bark is a good arc. It touches controversial topics like rape and depression. Brook's past, the best fight of Usopp against Perona, Zoro's sacrifice, Kuma. Yeah it was a good arc

I'm currently going through the Anime for the first time. I started about a month ago and I'm at 445, I've been watching all day, essentially from when I get up, while I work till I go to bed.
Why? Cus I'm loving the series so much that I don't want to stop watching. The only episodes I'm skipping are ones that are 100% filler and while there have been arcs that have been less entertaining I can't say there has been any bad arcs or any arcs that I wish I had skipped.
This series is a long haul, it's overwhelmingly big and long and almost everything should be watched. If you aren't enjoying it watching over 1000 episodes would be torture.

Please… please tell me people don’t actually skip pre timeskip. I can’t even comprehend how you could think that’s a good idea. You’d be so confused, you wouldn’t care about anything because you wouldn’t know any of the characters

I originally stopped watching One Piece right before Skypiea. Now that I’ve rewatched the entire series, Skypiea is definitely my fav arc.

Forever grateful I put myself onto one piece and didn’t like try and get into the one piece circles on social media. Started watching because of my curiosity and never skipped a single episode which only added to my love of this story and universe. Even the filler arcs I’m glad I watched because everyone made me feel like I could understand the crew a lil more

But no not all of OP is important to the actual story. But every piece seemed important to me and my understanding which I love

I feel like it’s really sad that so many people will know what the one piece is one day but won’t know why it’s so important or having cried and gotten angry and fell in love or made a life long friend with the people who make up the world of one piece.

I’m currently at the end of Zou and man this is guy is cooking, I’ve been watching since October 2022 and I’ve heard things from “How are you only on zou after a year and a half?” Or “I caught up in 3 months you need to watch faster” like I watch 4 episodes a week I like to keep at my own pace

    • @da_pikmin_coder8367

@@da_pikmin_coder8367 for real my friend who got me into one piece is only on episode 900 after 5 year of watching and the advice he told me was that I should watch at my own and take breaks if I needed to and that’s probably the best advice I’ve heard in a While

I was the person who binged the entire series in a couple of months, filler included (except for a few episodes leading into the movies). And I loved every friggin' second of it. Couldn't put it down. However, discretion is advised. My path is not a path all should take.

Very nice video with insightful takes!
When Fionna And Cake first came out on Netflix, I was hesitant to watch it as I never watched Adventure Time as a kid, but eventually gave in and just watched it anyway. Needless to say, I loved it enough to binge it all in a single day. Afterwards, I decided to try and watch Adventure Time. I told my friend about it who had also watched Fionna And Cake and he said that he was going to do the same thing.
In about 2 weeks, he finished every single episode and I had barely gotten through the first ten. I asked him if there were any episodes I could skip to, since it was really only the lore I cared about, and he said that I should just be patient and watch the whole show. Thinking about it now, neither of us took into consideration how different both of our tastes in shows are. He assumed that I should appreciate all of Adventure Time just as much as he did, and I tried to think so too. In the end I never even made it to episode 20. It's not that I hated Adventure Time, the show just wasn't my cup of tea. I could see myself turning it on to have something to play in the background while drawing or whatever, but not really a show I can binge on and give my whole un-divided attention to.
This video has also made me think about how my other friend consumes media. She's a huge fan of dragon ball, and when she told me that she hadn't even watched the original series I was shocked. I thought in order to be a true fan of something you would have to watch every episode of it. It's why when getting into one piece, I didn't skip any of the filler. I don't really regret doing that since I still enjoyed most of the filler, but after watching this video I've reflected more on my friends watching habits and how this isn't the first time she's been a huge fan of something without even watching much of it. sort of reminds me of those memes of someone wearing a band t-shirt and then getting asked to name the entire band's discography. you don't need to know everything about a show in order to be a "true" fan or whatever, you just need to enjoy it.
sorry this comment got so long, but thanks for making this video! i really enjoyed it :-)

It's funny, I'm actually trying to catch up on Adventure Time myself! I'm on around Season 6 right now. I watched it all the time as a kid. I was never sure to have watched the latest episode, it aired around the same time as my family dinner. So I always had to wait for re-runs. So what's funny is that every single episode I was watching up until around Season 5 Episode 20, I already vaguely remembered. But I love all the episodes. The funny, goofy ones. The calm, serene ones. The cosmic, abstract ones. And ofc the "important/serious" episodes.

As someone who wants to make similar one piece videos, I admire the hell out of you for locking in and producing it. You also make your points succinctly 2:02 and keep the pace going which is the trap that too many newtubers fall for. That being my man, my dude, get a better mic. If you've got 40k views with that submerged Tone Dial you'll explode with a little bit of production value.
Edit: nevermind the new video has better audio. Subbed.

Lmao thank you. I had still been recording on my Android Phone up to that point, as I never really had the spare money or desk space for a studio microphone. But once I hit 500 subs, I decided I needed to have it.

I didn't get into the series until Water 7 happened.
It was Water 7, the sea train and then Enies Lobby.
Ok what really got me into the series are the mysteries behind everything. That is what drives me forward. I want to know about Laugh Tale, the void century, the world government and it's corruption, Crocodile secret weakness, the Will of D and more.
It is the only reason I have kept going. I am currently on 990 right now and yes I am skipping complete filler arcs though and the movies. Ain't got time for that.

I got my mom to start One Piece more than a year ago, we (she) still haven't (hasn't) caught up. But you know what? She's enjoying it. She offers to watch it over her non-anime shows occasionally. The saying I've always heard was "At least watch through Arlong Park and decide from there" so I told her that, and she picked to continue it. I told her that people recommend skipping all the time, but to never do it. She enjoyed arcs that people said to skip, even filler, and honestly that just goes to show she's someone who would like One Piece regardless of what others say.

The problem I have with one piece, that it’s not boring, but it’s just that the pacing is really bad. This cannot be ignored. Oda and Toei Animation can be a lot more efficient in the stories pace.Idk when Oda is going to wrap up the story, but if he wants to finish it anytime soon, he has to cut some corners here. Not every plot thread needs to be followed up on.

Skypiea was so good. It was such a great exploration, a great adventure. Enel was one of the best written villians and there was great moment for sanji, robin, zoro ,luffy and chopper. Zoro was having his own adventures and was clashing with enel's priest and other foe. The survival game was really great, so well written. Great plot. Luffy was so funny in that arc. Its a shame that people really skip that arc.
