Envy Of None, the new band and debut self-titled album from Alex Lifeson (Rush), Andy Curran (Coney Hatch), Alfio Annibalini and singer Maiah Wynne.
Alex Lifeson is no stranger to the concept of evolution. As a founding member of Rush, he’s been able to explore more musical ground than just about any other guitar player out there - taking rock to new progressive heights throughout the decades and always in the most wildly inventive of ways. His influence can be heard on countless bands around the world, from indie shoegaze and math rock to heavy metal and beyond. Over the last few years Lifeson has been focusing on a new project that, no matter how well-acquainted you are with his discography, will undoubtedly shatter all seeds of expectation and blow the mind. That project is Envy Of None.
The new band, also featuring Coney Hatch founder/bassist Andy Curran, accomplished producer and engineer Alfio Annibalini and singer-songwriter Maiah Wynne, will be releasing their self-titled debut album on April 8 via Kscope. Its 11 tracks - which ricochet between various shades of alternative, experimental and synth rock - throw surprises at every turn, twisting dark melodies against contemporary pop hooks. Lifeson himself is proudly aware of how little of it crosses over with the band that made him famous.
However, it was only when singer Maiah Wynne became involved that this truly started to feel like a band destined to go somewhere. Her haunting melodies and soul-baring intensity is - by the admission of her own bandmates - what truly brought this music to life. All things considered; she is a star in the making… “I sent over an early version of the song Shadow,” explains Andy Curran. “When I played what she’d done back to the others they were like, ‘Who is this crazy talented person?!’”
The industrial beats, driving fuzz bass and atmospheric guitars concoct a seductive swirl indeed - thrilling in ways closer to the darker art rock of Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails and A Perfect Circle than anything these musicians have been known for prior.
“Maiah became my muse,” continues Alex Lifeson. “She was able to bring this whole new ethereal thing through her sense of melody on tracks like Liar and Look Inside. After hearing her vocals on Never Said I Love You, I felt so excited. I’ve never had that kind of inspiration working with another musician. When we say she’s special, it’s because she’s really fucking special!”
“One of my favourite things about these songs is the intimacy of them,” reveals Maiah Wynne. “It makes them feel different and more honest. There are some heavier songs too, like Enemy, and then tracks like Kabul Blues, that sound completely different to anything else.”
The album closer, Western Sunset, which was penned by Alex Lifeson in tribute to his dear friend Neil Peart. It’s a highly emotive piece of music to honour a man deeply missed by the rock community at large, and even more so by those who were lucky enough to know him. “I visited Neil when he was ill,” says Alex Lifeson. “I was on his balcony watching the sunset and found inspiration. There’s a finality about a sunset that kinda stayed with me throughout the whole process. It had meaning. It was the perfect mood to decompress after all these different textures… a nice way to close the book.”

He really does. I am so surprised I never heard of him before this. I guess he was in some 70's band that was named after a right wing conservative talk radio host before this, with a couple other guys, but they never really made it big. Too bad. Oh. My. Dog. I knew this wasn't a "Rush-y" record, and I thought I was prepared to give it a cursory listen, and file it away for future reference, but I am absolutely hypnotized by this record. Can't stop listening. Maiah singing is a revelation to behold.
Completely agree. I was expecting something bluesy or rush lite, but this is fantastic. Proper band in their own right. Weird thing is you can still hear rush there in places, but it works! Just like catching an influence in any bands music I guess.
I was reading up on Alex and Geddy post-Neil and found Envy of None and I am so happy I did. I will be buying this music. @MaiahWynne you have a gorgeous voice, you and Alex compliment each other so well.
This sounds like a woman took over The Cars in 1981 with a modern twist. Radio should be all over this track. Hopefully it's being serviced to pop stations globally.

This is REALLY REALLY excellent! They are firing on all cylinders, and Alex 'paints pictures' with his guitar, as always. Many of you die hard RUSH fans may recall the 'Signals' era (just watch the 'Subdivisions' video), where Lifeson clearly dressed a bit 'new wave'. I believe he had mentioned that he was into Ultravox and other new wave/alternative bands, during an interview at the time.
Nice strong album opener.
I love the ambiguity of it - part of me thinks, "OK, standard break-up song, the singer never said they loved them, so the other person decided they need some space, yadda yadda yadda."
But then, part of me is thinking, "wait...did the other person take their own life, and the singer never got a CHANCE to say they loved them?"
But you just DON'T KNOW.
Regardless, this album is fantastic. Digging it hard. Worth the (seemingly interminable) wait.
Been a rush fanatic ever since the 70’s. With Neil’s unfortunate passing having Alex land with this band is amazing and the lead singers voice is magical! I bought on the i tune store and hope they play some gigs. I know for a fact they will sell out in a hot minute.
I know that some people are complaining about Alex doing something different but I dig it. There will never be another Rush so Alex is exploring other avenues with his music. Absolutely nothing wrong with that.

I like the album, I just wish Alex would have added more of his guitar magic there is so much room for it.
If you listen closely, you may find more guitar than there seems to be on a casual listen. He is hiding it, here and there, and it often doesn't sound like a traditional guitar, but I bet it is. He is tricky. lol

Old Strings is the best song on the record. We need a video of that track for sure hopefully it will match Maiah in the scenario the lyrics are expressing in the song and not abstract. Maiah needs to be in that one if made.

I've been the quintessential Rush fan since 1981. I decided to give this a listen, not knowing what to expect. Omg I'm sorry I too so long. This is amazing. Proving one again Alex is TJE guitarist's guitarist. I love that he's playing from his heart and doing what he wants to do,as always. Never giving into the record company or naysayers.
Extremely well crafted. The multiple layering of vocals and guitars, along with a no nonsense 'new wave' rhythm, driven by the drums and bass, throw in a synth straight from The Cars, and you have a very powerful song. It is deep, dark, light, poppy and mysterious, all at the same time. I want more, already. Lots more. Please keep going, as I want to see the way this kind of talent evolves and grows. If this is the freshman album, imagine what the undergraduate album will sound like. (Just a thought: A cover/remake of Tears from RUSH Twenty-one Twelve with Maiah doing her own vocal treatment would be really interesting to hear).

A test of how good an album is, is how the music affects you after time. I loved the Envy of None album when it first was released and I love it every bit as much now. It is still less than a year but this is one that I come back to regularly. The songwriting, the performances, the production are all top notch. This album introduced me to Maiah Wynne and she is delightful to the ear (and eyes too). I am a Rush nut so naturally checked out this project via Alex. And now my music encyclopedia is broadened with Maiah, Andy and Alfie. The music on this Envy of None runs through different styles, pop, industrial, new age, etc and shows some versatility. A very fine collection of songs. As someone who typically does not like newer offerings, this one is an exception. I simply love it. I am hoping that these talented musicians will do another album sometime. ❤

This is a great album and such a wonderful bunch of musicians. So glad I stumbled upon it. Beautiful, light voice that really contrasts some very dark lyrics. The production is out of this world insane good. The writing is just super imaginative. Every track is a surprise, and there is nothing that sounds like the just a re-mix or re-do of a different track. I can hear the hard work you all put into this. Beautifully done and congratulations.

Rush fan here and I can't stop listeneing to this album. Maiah has the voice of an angel.
I had hoped that Alex might return to his harder rock Zeppelinesque guitar-driven roots but I guess he's Finding His Way and maybe this is appropriate for a man of his age and stature. Too old to rock and roll, too young to die.
