100k?!? I hope you know that I really appreciate every one of you! I would love to hear your thoughts for a 100k special video 💕💕 (also sorry if some parts of this were a bit out of sync - I was trying a new recording setup and it seems whenever I made a brush stroke, the recording lagged)
Oh my god. I've finally learned what multiply layers are. Finally, the ancient scrolls have been found!!! The question I've had since day one!!! Praise the Goddess JelloArts. PRAISE!!!
"you don't have layer modes irl" i wouldn't think about it that way, digital art is just different and cool in its own way and you have to use it in the way you want, don't think about other mediums cause every is different (i suck at most of them, including digital) you have pencil you can think just about eraser and pencil, when you have watercolors you use water which makes it all different, you can have markers which you have just them and blender and you go with it, you have digital and sooooo many different stuff you can do with it you have to find your way experiment with it and just try it all out, i am not the best in it in any possible way but im gonna do the same thing and you are basically doing the same thing with every medium just experiment and use all the benefits the medium gives you that you want ;) cool video as always btw i loved it :3 good to know how these layer modes work
I really agree with you. To me, digital art is "real life" as well, just another medium with it's own quirks. I think the jist of "you don't have layer modes in real life, so it's good to not rely on them too much" reworded is more so, don't blindly rely on layer modes, but understand what color theory is going on behind them.
I really liked this video. I usually use traditional mediums in my art, so using digital programs is frustrating because I KNOW how to get the pretty light effects on paper but on digital art it just kind goes *merp* and turns into a blob. This helped me understand the actual program I'm using and what all of these extra terminology means.
Omhmahgawd yes. No matter how good you are at traditional art, you have to relearn everything for digital art. I hope your digital art journey is going well 😊
I use overlay to help make the character fit the background more. If the background is mostly blue, for example, I'll put a blue (sometimes purple) overlay on the character.
Another pro tip: If you want colored line art, just put alpha lock on your line art layer. (Alpha lock basically means that you can only color what's on that layer, obviously, alpha lock only works if you're on the layer you want to be colored. Therefore, if you go over your line art with the color you want it, then you'll have perfectly colored line art. Clipping can also be used for this trick as well, and clipping is actually more so recommended than alpha lock because clipping is on an entirely different layer, so if you messed up on a part of the coloring, then you can erase that color easily without affecting the line art, but alpha lock is on the same layer, so if you tried erasing a bit of the coloring then you'd be erasing the line art as well).
Binary colour changes the colours to one of the binary colours that a computer uses. I believe that it is a filter that allows you to preview what your artwork would look like if saved as 16 colour bitmap (I think that's the right file type...) Soo many colours in the one sentence...
I guess I need a sort of "why" video? I've never understood "why" these modes exsist when I can do the exact same thing with differemt brushes and opacity. Is it kinda just a more adjustable shortcut?
The difference is more like using a stone instead of a hammer to put a nail into a piece of wood. So the 'why' is actually, why would you use a stone when you have a hammer?
A common use is for coloring. A lot of professional digital artists work in b&w and then add color after, using layer modes. This let's you perfect shading and textures and then worry about color at the end, it's much faster and more efficient to work that way for many people. Another use is getting effects that might take waaaay too long if you did it by eye, as an example; if I wanted a nice night time scene, I could hand pick a pallet that matches and fits my color scheme and then try to tweak them to get a night time effect and go by eye for each individual color like.. "Well if his coat is red, in shade on a moonlit night, it should be more purple ish.. but the street lamps are orange... so..." OR I could do the piece as if it had neutral lighting and then add a blue or other color filter using the right layer mode and make it look night time very easily! Certain modes can do exactly what you want. Since shadows are affected differently than bright spots at night, you might use a mode that applies the blue color only to the shaded parts and not the bright spots. This way is much faster and easier if you understand the layer modes as well as color theory. There are many more examples you can find, and I'm still learning myself. I'd just say go play with them. Draw and neutral scene and try to use just modes and adjustments to get different meanings or feelings. Make it feel like a love scene, or a horror scene, or make it night, or feel like they're in the matrix. It's a good learning experiment for layer modes. Hope this helps!
You have no idea how badly this was needed. I watch all these “beginner” tutorials and they tell me to multiply layer but not WHY or what it does! I need to understand why I’m doing it so when I’m doing my own art I can get the effects I want. Why was this so hard to find?!? I’ve been a traditional artist for YEARS… I’m 36, and now trying to move to digital has been the hardest thing I’ve done in art ever. Ever. I think I was just too set in my ways of doing things. I have a great understanding of lighting, anatomy, proportions and rendering….. it’s the digital tools and what I have to work with, what they do and why and when I’d want to use them. Thank you this was hugely helpful
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO!! I'm fairly new to digital art and I'm being self taught. I always wanted to know about the layers and modes and how to use them correctly. This video is by far the best tutorial I've seen. You stick to the point and you show and explain everything in detail. Thank you so much.
This Tutorial/Guide has been so useful to me, I've really never actually understood how this modes worked, but after wacthing this I feel like I could use them on my own. Tysm!
I always wondered how artists shaded their lines! Multiply also super helps when drawing patterns on clothes since it can pull the shading from the layers below it.
Fantastic tutorial; incredibly easy to understand and massively helpful! Have always struggled with shading and lighting hut studying othet artist's .psd files, I see them using these nodes all the time, but never understood why...now I do! This will not only make studying easier but also very much help me to determine what layers to use where and how.
Holy cow, this was incredibly helpful! I've been trying to figure out layer modes for AGES and this video showed everything perfectly! Thanks so much, can't wait to try this stuff!
Paint tool sai 2. I NEEED EEETTT! 👌 Edit: i like using screen with a blueish white color to make an effect that glinted lenses have. Its my go to effect for ppl wearing glasses.
If you have paint tool Sai 1, you have free access to 2. To actually get the program you need the certificate that they email the details for. If you take the email details and make a new certificate, you can add in the paint tool Sai 2 code in instead of 1. Soz this is really complicated to type out but if you have paint tool Sai 1 I'd recommend researching to get 2
What have I been doing with all my time?! This makes things so much easier! Thank you so much for making this video. I didn’t even know these later modes existed.
My god, your tutorial explained everything so well. I'm so greatful because every other tutorial I've seen made things confusing, thankyou sm for this 😭
Sorry I know this is an older post but it's so helpful. A thing I have personally noticed and been meaning to mess around with, is this saturated colour that often forms when your lighting layer (what I use is called soft light in Artrage 5) hits, or in my case, goes over the multiply layer. Ive seen in nature that this tends to happen and I always wondered how to replicate it or how and why it happens but, there it is!
im just starting to find a new hobby and digital painting is the one im trying. Thank you for the explanation it really helps to understand the features
I started thinking of that one song in the first sentence _whats the difference between s1 and s2_ _you draw a good one, but you do what you supposed to do_ _i can draw in what they feel, what they feel with emotions-_ I’ll stop now
Hey to everyone who is looking for the answers in the replies. I'll tell yall. I strongly prefer Paint tool Sai 2 to 1. Paint tool Sai 2 can recover art that wasn't saved. So if your pc turns off, you can get the art back exactly where you left it. 2 also has more layer types and brushes. It also has an option to draw perfect shapes such as circles and squares. Meh thx for reading (If you already have paint tool Sai 1, you can get 2 for free :3)
QUICK TIPS Multiply: Think of Shadow Screen: A little bit of Sunlight Overlay: Set the Temperature like warm or cold. Can set the Mood. Shade: Glow or Dark Luminosity/Shine: Some direct Sunlight
I'm using Clip Studio for the first time ever (I've only ever used the program Sketchbook) and it's like being thrown into the water and trying to figure out how to swim! I especially was having trouble finding how to do the Overlay on the layers and couldnt find it anywhere on the program, but within the first minute of your video I found it ;^; Thank you!!
This actually helps so much!! Thank you! I’ve been trying to figure out how to change the lighting/shading to be more appealing and/or change the hues and looks of that whole layer.
Ohh tysm for this! I’ve been doing digital art on CSP for a year now but thought blending modes were too confusing so I sticked to the basics, going no further than clipping, and manually changing the shades in color and lineart like in the multiply, shade, etc modes. Thank you, this is going to save me *so much time!* :”D
I’m just starting out with digital drawing. I’ve always been confused over how these work and meaning to them. Thank you so much for this video, which I can now refer back to should I need too.
thank you! I struggled so much! I was trying to make a glow from under but my character ended up looking like a zombie now I can make her cute again! tysm!
I've only used overlay for lightning and similar effects. So I didnt really know what it did. I wish I found this a few days ago when I was trying to shade a drawing XD That would've made my life so much easier
I can't believe I've been doing digital art for years and I never thought to use this... Am I just stupid? I've known about the filters like multiply and screen for quite a while too... Well, never the less, thank you so much! I absolutely have to use this in Photoshop!
I just started to learn digital art and sooo confused about so many things in the app Then i found this video and it is soooo helpful!!!💖💖💖 thank you! 🌸🌸🌸
Hi! I wanted to congratulate you on 100k subs! You explained so much. I featured some of your videos in my art blog to help remind me of lessons and what things are used for along with what I learned.
I personally just scribble random colors and cycle through filters until they cover up my bad coloring. I should stop using those and practice more... This video is great! Lots of good information!
100k?!? I hope you know that I really appreciate every one of you! I would love to hear your thoughts for a 100k special video 💕💕 (also sorry if some parts of this were a bit out of sync - I was trying a new recording setup and it seems whenever I made a brush stroke, the recording lagged)
JelArts idk I'm just so damn happy. You can do whatever you feel like congrats jess
JelArts Draw 100 Ks with no context
JelArts love you'r video ههههه حلو
Congratulations! Well deserved!!! 😊🙏
Holy cow! Congrats! :D
Screen: For light purposes
Overlay: Dramatic effect
Shine: Lighter Screen
Luminosity: Glowing effect
Multiply: Shadow effect
Shade: More Intense / realistic shadow effect
Binary Color: I am confusion
Binary Color is that one weird kid
THANK U!!!!!!!
Maybe binary color is used to find that one pixel that's transparent when it's not supposed to
How bout the others

So that's what "clipping" means!!! Omg... This was so helpful in all areas!! Thank you!! 💖

Watercolor is just a shitton of multiply layers
It's about making the use of it? I guess? I mean, it's there.. so why no use it?
I've been a traditional artist for over 30 years.....I'm just now delving into digital. Thank you so much for your tutorials. They are very helpful.

I feel like overlay would be really good for creating moods or colored lighting
I use overlay to help make the character fit the background more. If the background is mostly blue, for example, I'll put a blue (sometimes purple) overlay on the character.
I made a bee charcter and he was wearing a gas mask and used overlay to make the shine on the glass part for the eyes
I use overlay mostly for non-colored lights and shading, but if you pair it with a color overlay, it can look really cool!

8:05 *This is just a time stamp so I can look at the different layer options. Don't mind me.*
i actually needed that as well. Thanks dude
Thank you! A bunch of other tutorials just say “use multiply /etc.” Like, I DONT KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS
I've been looking for a tutorial like this for months! Thank you so much!
Anagniou I'm really glad it helped!

I'm actually somewhat new to digital art (around 1 and half month or so), so this is really helpful! Thank you~
Carrotstache same I’m lost without the help of these tutorials.
god, finally, i found a tutorial about blending modes that is so easy to understand(at least for me). thank you so much! *kneels and bows down*

Digital painting is so fun to get into! It has its own challenges but it has its benefits! I love it
Ive been a digital artist for five years and finally i understand those layer modes XD thx alot
What’s the differece between sai1 and sai2? And I think u should do a request drawing video while Q&A? Anyways ur amasing
Kata Szabó Sai 2 has gradients, text tool, shapes, more layer modes, rulers, etc. There's lots of really nice changes! Also, thanks for the ideas!
I know this is late, so I'm not expecting you to reply. Why is there such a little amount of brushes, is It because of it being a preview?
I started thinking of that one song in the first sentence
_whats the difference between s1 and s2_
_you draw a good one, but you do what you supposed to do_
_i can draw in what they feel, what they feel with emotions-_

Shade: Glow or Dark
Luminosity/Shine: Some direct Sunlight

I have been trying to find out how to use layers for a while now and this has been the most helpful video I have found this far. Thank you so much!
Wow, this really helped me with my issues, i really had no idea what those were so my drawings are old plain and solid, love you❤
This actually helps so much!! Thank you! I’ve been trying to figure out how to change the lighting/shading to be more appealing and/or change the hues and looks of that whole layer.
Ohh tysm for this! I’ve been doing digital art on CSP for a year now but thought blending modes were too confusing so I sticked to the basics, going no further than clipping, and manually changing the shades in color and lineart like in the multiply, shade, etc modes. im new to digital art and ive been looking for this everywhere, HUGE THANKS
I never actually understood what anything but multiply did, so this was very helpful!
Wow now my drawings went from OK to genuinely appealing to look at. You deserve a sub😍
I’m just starting out with digital drawing. I’ve always been confused over how these work and meaning to them. Thank you so much for this video, which I can now refer back to should I need too.
I loved her own fascination with the luminosity midtone "That's really cool..."

i have been looking for something like this forever. This is a really great tutorial
I'm Brazilian, but your video really helped me to understand a little even though I am international, thank you!
I've only used overlay for lightning and similar effects. So I didnt really know what it did. I wish I found this a few days ago when I was trying to shade a drawing XD
That would've made my life so much easier
Im new with using digital art software since I got my first drawing tablet recently. This is helpful for a beginner like me! Thanks for this video ❤❤
I FINALLY LEARNED HOW TO USE MULTIPLY THANK YOU VERY MUCH
I’m crouched in the bathroom watching this at my grandmas funeral bc I need to make a digital portrait of her and I don’t know wtf overlay is
This video was EXTREMELY HELPFUL THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! I don't alot of videos explaining the layer modes.
Do you have a video on full body basic anatomy? If not could you make one? I'm really struggling and your videos have been so helpful.
I’ve been digitally drawing for so long but too scared to do anything I’m not familiar with. This helps so much, thank youuu
i rewatched this months apart, i get it now! thank you~
Very helpful to me, thank you very much❤
I can't believe I've been doing digital art for years and I never thought to use this... Am I just stupid? I've known about the filters like multiply and screen for quite a while too... Well, never the less, thank you so much! I absolutely have to use this in Photoshop!
Tutorials was of great help...very clear explanations of the blend modes..Thank you for the tutorial 😀
I just started to learn digital art and sooo confused about so many things in the app

Thank you for titorual. Although I use Ibis, I think some of modes are just labeled differently. But it was useful seeing modes side by side
Just learn some knowledge from you. It's so helpful for me as a beginner in digi art. Thank you!
I hope you improve quickly :)
