  • I bought a fly rod a year ago with the hopes of someday getting to try it out. This trip to Redding, California had zero expectations or plans for real fishing happening. Little did I know, God would put me on my first ever fly fishing experience and my first ever rainbow trout on a fly rod, my third trout in my lifetime. I’m thankful my wife let me explore a little while we were on our retreat that had nothing to do with fishing, ha! Thank you, Kat! It was remarkable to find out while we were in the area that the Hat Creek happens to be a world-renown trout fishing destination for people of all caliber and experience fishing. It was a true blessing to just be in that entire area to begin with and I had to share it for the memories alone and hope to go back. Maybe this video will give you a little insight on the area, too, if you happen to be north of Redding anytime soon. Also, don’t forget to swing by Burney Falls and enjoy the most amazing waterfall you’ll ever see. Just get there early in the morning and expect the temperatures to be near 50 degrees and wet even on hot summer days there.
Keep coming back, subscribe if you haven’t, and don’t forget, you’re going to love it!

Yeah, it was definitely a beautiful area. I really wish I new more about it before I went to the neighborhood, I would have planned better and fished that waterfall pond, too. It would be a neat place to go back to someday.

Beautifully done, like always. I felt like I was watching a movie.

Glad you think so. If I don’t like to watch/edit it, you probably won’t get to see it. Ha, ha , ha. I wished I had more time to explore and fish and actually had my camera gear with me. But it worked. I’m looking at my Idaho footage now and am not sure it will make for a great video at this long because I didn’t catch one while in the river with the fly rod this time. But I do have some old footage of a trout I caught in my family pond out in a plastic dinghy in Donnelly, Idaho I can potentially use to make it have a fish catch at least. Ha!

Thank you! It’s a passion project. Lots of beautiful landscape I couldn’t leave out of a memorable trip. I hope to make it back to the area and actually fish Burney Falls next time, too. My next video stop was on the Rogue River in Oregon, which was just as beautiful. I’m hoping I can do that area justice, too. I only used that fly rod three times on our trip back to North Dakota, but it was enough for me to stop and get waders and boots for the next time I can find a cold river with trout again.

Were those crawdads in Baum lake? Heading up there this weekend!

Endangered species I guess. Shasta crayfish numbers went down to around 500 for a while and they are trying to revive the population I think. You cannot take and eat or do anything with them there. It's a really beautiful area. Good luck if you go fishing.

You’re not fishing the actual Hat Creek. You’re fishing the Cassel forebay which consists of the canal and the dam area which supplies water to the Baum Lake powerhouse. The real Hat Creek is much different.

Good to know. I've never been there before and it was just showing up as that on Google Maps and it's really hard to know what is what around there as a stranger in a strange land. It sure was a great little area, though. I was happy to have found some fish for sure. Thanks for stopping by and letting me know. If I ever get back that way, I'll have to ask around next time.

The real Hat Creek is downstream of Baum Lake and it has special regulations. Catch and release along with artificial flies or lures with barbless hooks. There is also an upper section that is fun to fish as well. I live right there in Cassel where you were fishing and I fish there almost every day. Glad you made it out here and fished.
