whether neurasthenia was really gendered in this way is unclear. It seems fair to say that it was not gendered in parts of Europe ( Cultures of Neurasthenia, Marijke Gijswijt-Hofstra, Roy Porter, chap 9, p.202). In America, George Beard doesn't seem to view it as gendered.... neither is it considered to be a problem of women in most of the early monographs by physicians. If it was gendered, it probably happened in quite the opposite way as depicted here... the elite, intellectual, brain-worker members of society were supposed to develop the ailment- that means mostly men.... the "gender studies" take on neurasthenia obscures that fact that women were probably initially denied the diagnosis because of the social roles of the day. Instead they continued to get other labels, especially in the early days of the diagnosis.
Neurasthenia was just another waste-basket diagnosis in a long line of them. These days we use depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, in place of terms like neurasthenia.

Depression, CFS, fibromyalgia, in turn became the new waste-basket diagnosis.
