Universalism is the only big picture theological view that makes sense of all the other doctrines. It ties everything together. Christ is finally all in all. Other views puts man, the created one, on top. This puts the author of life, the creator God, on top. Yay!

I am Italian, but i live in Yorkshire, UK for many many years. It is already a few years that universal salvation makes so much sense to me in relating it to our God of Love ! I have discussions with Christians but they seem to be so stuck on defending the doctrine of eternal hell-fire and punishment ... that i recoiled of such hardness of heart... yes, God is also has justice and punishments, which, actually are already integrated in the laws of life and we pay the wages of sins already by the consequences we reap, but we do learn so many precious lessons from it... in fact now i am developing my "theology" about sin and evil... ( although we all wish to get rid of it..) i see that sin and evil it was and it is still necessary for the growth of our souls, therefore i now feel confident to say that sin and evil it was in God's plan. ( there are many sensibile reasons for that). I could talk for hours, and i do talk about it to some Christians who are open, also of the possibility (i feel it strongly because i believe it) that even the fallen angels shall all be restore at one point in God's perfect plan; i have Christians really getting very self-righteous with me with indignation about that, and they reproved me. But the more i go on with life, the more my beliefs in universal restoration grows. I receive many insights, and i love to dig into the scriptures of the Bible and other insightful scriptures to make a foundation for universal salvation. I did 2 years studies and i have qualification to teach "catechism' ... my dream would be to get a degree in theology... all so i could spread the wonderful news of unversal salvation. Thank you brother! Very good! It’s refreshing to hear someone preach the Real Good News instead of terrible news! The popular “gospel”, which is “another gospel”, teaches that the “good news” is that we all get to spend eternity in hell fire torture and unbearable pain and misery, except a “few” super smart “choosers” who did the right thing in their short little life here, with said “few”, of course, being the self righteous ones promoting it, about 2 Billion or so alive currently.
Yeah, what could be better news for mankind than being tortured in hell fire for all eternity?? I mean, that does sound pretty good, doesn’t it? :)

When I started out as a christian I was so devastated that some people were going to be tormented in fire forever and ever but I felt I just had to accept it and not think about it too much. As I matured I kept thinking isn’t God wise enough to come up with a plan that actually works for what He wants? That’s what got me. Then one day I dared to actually consider the doctrine that some reasonable people believe. The “forbidden doctrine” of the restoration of all things. The glories of Jesus is what I find.

But everything they say about inclusion and the work of the Spirit in all people suarely points to an underlying belief in universalism. Sometimes the tension this causes is almost unbearable!

Perhaps Jesus says "eternal" punishment because God is eternal at it is His fire that cleanses us. Also since time as we know it does not exist in the afterlife, maybe "eternal" was His way of contrasting the difference how we perceive things here and how things work in the world we cannot comprehend.

"Eternal" might not even be the best translated word. You can check out Youngs Literal Translation or Rotherhams Enphasized Bible and you realize that there is no word for "eternal" in Greek, it's always age during, and even when they talk about punishment, the word for punishment is more like: "corrective punishment", like how is God going to correct someone for all eternity?

Orthodox Understanding About Hell Could Be A Faith Issue
    * This entire matter about the orthodox view of hell either being being tormented forever or being annihilated could come down to a faith issue. More specifically, it could come down to a MASSIVE lack of faith! What do I mean?
‭‭ ““Therefore I tell you: Don’t worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food and the body more than clothing? Consider the birds of the sky: They don’t sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth more than they? Can any of you add one moment to his life span by worrying? And why do you worry about clothes? Observe how the wildflowers of the field grow: They don’t labor or spin thread. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was adorned like one of these. If that’s how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and thrown into the furnace tomorrow, won’t he do much more for you - you of little faith? So don’t worry, saying, ‘What will we eat? ’ or ‘What will we drink? ’ or ‘What will we wear?’ For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you. Therefore don’t worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
    ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭6:25-34‬ ‭CSB‬‬
    bible.com/bible/1713/mat.6.25-34.CSB
    * In the above text, Jesus calls God our Heavenly Father. Then he rebuked us for believing God will not take care of us better than He takes care of the birds of the sky. If that shows a lack of faith, consider this possibility: The Bible says that God is love and that his faithful love endures forever:
“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His faithful love endures forever.”
    ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭136:1‬ ‭CSB‬‬
    bible.com/bible/1713/psa.136.1.CSB
    * It also says that He is our loving Father, that He wants everyone to be saved, and nothing is impossible with God. Isn’t it possible that in light of everything the Bible says about God, that if we believe that God will either at the minimum allow someone to suffer punishment for ever and ever or to be annihilated for ever and ever, that we are displaying the biggest lack of faith in the history of lack of faith. Again, Jesus said we lack faith when we think God will take care of a bird better than He takes care of us. How much more could we be showing a lack of faith to think that a living God would not eventually save everyone.
    * In light of Jesus calling God our Heavenly Father, how would you feel if you child thought that you would kill him if he didn’t obey you and think exactly the way you wanted them to think? How would you feel if you child said he knew you loved him but that you would allow him to suffer for eternity if he didn’t do things exactly as you wanted to do things? How might God feel if universalism is true?
    * Do we believe that God wants us all to be saved?
“This is good, and it pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
    ‭‭1 Timothy‬ ‭2:3-4‬ ‭CSB‬‬
    bible.com/bible/1713/1ti.2.3-4.CSB
    * Do we believe that God cannot save everyone because of everyone’s freewill?
    * Is the blood of Jesus not enough to save everyone?
    * Should we interpret God’s love through the filter of the passages about hell that can be interpreted different ways or should we interpret hell through the filter of God’s everlasting love?
    * Last thought: Some say this is a philosophical approach to this matter and not a biblical one but I say this is simply reasoning through our faith like Abraham did regarding his son Isaac. Faith reasons.

Good news Brendan, the term 'unpardonable sin', is unbiblical and the short answer to your question is "yes", but I'll post a longer answer that may help and encourage you not to worry.
To start with, the term ‘the unpardonable sin’ IS NOT biblical. Three passages that are helpful to look at on this subject are paralleled in, Matthew 12:30-35, Mark 3:28-30 and Luke 12:8-12. The passages in Matthew and Mark give a clearer understanding of the context involved, while its absence from the text in Luke perhaps influenced the unbiblical term ‘the unpardonable sin” to be coined.
From Luke. “And everyone who shall be declaring a word against the Son of Mankind, it shall be pardoned him, yet the one who blasphemes against the holy spirit shall not be pardoned.” Luke 12:10 (CLV). Now from Matthew, then from Mark, with some very helpful additional text shown that doesn’t appear in Luke. “And whoever may speak a word against the Son of Man it shall be forgiven to him, but whoever may speak against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this age, nor in that which is coming.” Matt. 12:32 (YLT). “Verily I say to you, that all the sins shall be forgiven to the sons of men, and evil speakings with which they might speak evil, but whoever may speak evil in regard to the Holy Spirit hath not forgiveness-to the age, but is in danger of age-during judgment;” Mark 3:28-29 (YLT).
I’ve heard various claims regarding ‘the unpardonable sin’, including it being, drugs, money, or even drink, to name but a few. But there is no need for confusion when God’s word tells us clearly what it is. Notice a variation of words used to emphasize the same warning, “blasphemes”, “speak against”, or “speak evil in regard to”. So this was a VERBAL sin being committed in regard to the Holy Spirit of God and intentionally by the religious leaders of the day no less!
The context being they watched Jesus perform miracles, signs and wonders through the power of the Holy Spirit. But instead of them glorifying God, they intentionally tried to undermine God’s glory by attributing the miracles to satanic sources. They verbally accused Jesus of driving out demons under demonic influence! The Pharisees said, "This man is not casting out the demons except by Beezeboul, the chief of the demons." Matt. 12:24 (CLV). Physically they were near to their Messiah, yet spiritually they were as far away as ever!
You need not worry Brendan, as you are living under different circumstances to those of the religious leaders at the time Jesus walked among them. Also your concern is a further reason not to be worried. As it was the unwavering arrogant attitude of the religious leaders that became a stumbling stone to them.
Now it’s true to say those who blasphemed and went to the grave with that same attitude, will have a time of judgement upon them. It’s said to be “in this age”, which they died during and they can’t change their mind in the grave, Ecc. 9:5, “nor in that which is coming”, or “impending”, which is the ‘Millennial reign of Christ’ (age). So as judgement remains on them, their actions ‘disqualified them’ from entering into age-abiding life during the coming/impending age. However at the end of the next/impending age, they will receive a future resurrection at the Great White Throne, give account and be chastened/corrected where necessary. Some here enter the second death temporarily, but they will still be reconciled to God, Col. 1:20, justified in His sight, Rom. 5:18 and no one will be held in the second death indefinitely, as we read death is eventually abolished, 1 Cor. 15:26. This is due to all being made alive beyond the reach of death, one class at a time, 1 Cor. 15:22-24, according to God's plan. So God will eventually be All in all, 1 Cor. 15:28, for His glory!

The first chapter and verse of the first book of the Bible state quite clearly that God did not make hell, neither at the beginning, nor at any time afterwards. He made the heavens, and the Earth, and it was all very good. No hell. So all subsequent ideas of hell are not ‘mythological’ ie. they are not based on Christian mythology, but they are ‘psychological’ ie. they are based on Christian psychology. Christian psychology is the state of mind of Christians, not the state of mind of Christ/God.

Jordan Peterson says 'Do not try and rescue someone who does not want to be rescued.' That seems to be at least part of the point to this life- the realisation that we need to be saved, that we can't save our selves and we need a Saviour. If Jesus does save everyone in the end what is the point of having people struggle through life - sometimes in great torment. If everyone will be saved eventually then why torture everyone first, just skip to the saving. Making everyone live out their misery doesn't sound like a very loving thing to do.
Instead if Jesus came and died and rose again to offer this gift of eternity with him to those who discover or are shown the need to be rescued then life is about receiving this revelation and sharing it with others, so they too can be saved. Yes, also struggle, but one with a purpose and a promise at the end. That makes a lot more sense to me then a purposeless painful existence that leads to 'paradise' regardless of the desire of the participant in the process.

  • @sal4334

Interesting point of view, however the speaker is ignoring that in order to be saved you have to believe. I find many truths, and at the same time many thoughts that are not aligned with Jesus's words.
For example: EVERYONE WILL BE SAVED VS. JESUS' WORDS
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him (John 3:36) If the wrath of God remain on some, is Jesus death and resurrection less powerful? Of course not! But we are reconciled and therefore saved once we have believed and admitted we have ignored and offended God. I know many, many people who openly reject the idea of being with God in this life, let alone in eternity. Why would a person who rejected God, openly in this life, would want to be with Him in eternity? In His mercy, God will SAVE EVERYONE WHO BELIEVES IN HIM. Please do not forget that second clause. It is not perfect people, or religious people, or calvinists, or armenian, or universalists, but those WHO BELIEVE IN HIM. That is something that can't be taken off from the whole of the Bible account. Those who believed in Him were rescued in the flood, Abraham and Lot believed, also in the passover and in so, so many accounts were God wants to save everyone, but many are repeatedly ignoring Him.
We ought to repent and believe... and we all will be saved.
Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand;[e] repent and believe in the gospel.” Mark 1:14-15
And about the Greek words concerning everlasting or not meaning that at all... please see the references: www.biblegateway.com/resources/encyclopedia-of-the-bible/Everlasting-Punishment

Eventually everyone will believe in Christ, some in this life, others after death, Obviously, there are many advantages and blessings for believing in this life. Every knee will bow and confess that Jesus is Lord. Most Christians assume the knee bowing will be by force and not out of adoration.

Do you honestly believe that mentally retarded, criminally insane, brain damaged, horrifically abused, or those who never heard the gospel just go to hell? I wasn't a Christian until I was 24 because I had untreated borderline personality disorder and PTSD. I could barely make it from one day to the next or think rationally, let alone believe in a loving God. Some people don't get the opportunity to heal that makes it possible for belief. So they just go to hell? You don't "win" Heaven by doing anything or believing anything. Romans 14 is a good read.

I've known so many Christians who actually love the idea of Hell and that other people will be sent there -- it's sad.
We know that God didn't make anyone so He could put them in Hell because we are told that Hell was made for God's rebellious heavenly children, not for us!
We forget that "redeemer" in the Old Testament means "kinsman-redeemer", someone who is close kin to those being redeemed. The only ones who could not be redeemed would be those who are not kin -- but Jesus is kin to all humanity, so all humanity gets redeemed.
Point of correction: the Crucifixion was the victory; the Resurrection is just its fruit. The Crucifixion is the coronation, the Resurrection is the parade.
In grad school we learned that the Greek αἰώνιος should be rendered "agewise", and an age lasts until its purpose has been completed. Thus if punishment has the purpose of turning people to Christ then however long that takes qualifies as an "age" for that person -- but the purpose of life with God is life with God, so the "age" during which we live with God can't end. If that is the case, then Augustine's argument from Matthew 25 fails.

What is then the point of death of Christ if the universalism salvation is true? Road A and Road B cannot end up in the same destiny. Christ said, unless you repent and believe, you will not enter the kingdom of God.
Jesus said, "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it" (Matthew 7:13-14).
"Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire" (Revelation 20:15).
Therefore, universal salvation is not biblical.

The death of Chris is what makes Christian universalism possible and true. Eventually every knee will bow and confess that Jesus is Lord. Most Christians assume this will be force. No, will be because of love and recognition of who Christ is. In regard to the narrow gate, indeed it is narrow because Christ is the only way. Outside of him is destruction, but not eternal destruction. Eventually everyone will be entering the narrow gate, some sooner, some later, each according to his own order. Eventually the whole universe will be reconciled to God. Christs victory over sin, the world, and the devil will eventually fully manifested.

I see both sides. Christ died for a reason. We are saved from something otherwise hide life, death and resurrection don’t make sense. But my thought is this. Before Christ, probably 95% of people were Hellbound. The obsurd laws of the Old Testament were to show God’s high standard that no man could really attain. However, Godly man still went to Paradise after death. My question is this. Even after Christ, it’s inferred that MOST people will go to hell. Probably still 85-90% of all people. So did Christ die to save just 5% more people? Even with Christ, wide is the gate of destruction. If Satan was defeated at the cross, what does that mean? He was defeated before then right? Unless Christ died and it reconciled ALL people so that the only one’s suffering in hell would be Satan and his angels. Having said that, there are people in Revelations that choose the Mark. So we know humans will be in hell. Hope these questions of mine make sense
