  • Old School CPVC and Schedule 80 nipples are old news, High temp unions are the way to go. They’ll save you all the problems that come with nipples such as leaking threads and non serviceability.

A couple comments.. Putting pipe joint compound on the threads is pointless. Your seal is being created at the o-ring only. The overall depth of the threads on these fittings is less than a nipple so it's not sealing there. Also, look how those pump lids are almost hitting. That's another reason why you should have backed it up a little. Should be 10" straight run into pump with 2" pipe. You have the unions now which makes future motor maintenance easy if you're worried about backside clearance. This is to allow the pump to prime easier and last longer. Finally, best way to avoid getting glue into the joint with the gasket is to plumb the unions broken apart/off the pump. That way you can wipe any excess glue immediately if it runs into the joint surface.

I had trouble finding these High-Temp Unions, but finally found the maker - Praher 150-906 1.5" MPT X 1.5" Slip Union with O-Ring, and Praher 200-906 2" MPT X 2" Slip Union with O-Ring.

Just prior to the video ending, why didn't you show gluing the "out pipe" to the union prior to hand tightening both pieces together? Wasn't that the point?

Thanks for the video. These things solved my problem. Know that when you glue the slip on make sue your screw attachment thing is already on.

You always take the union apart to solvent cement so no cement or primers on o-rings. Unions are Hand Tight only and NEVER used Channel Locks or any wrench with teeth.

Dang it you skipped the whole part of cementing in the pipes. I assume you just have to measure correctly

Can these fittings be used in connections other than for a pump? I got my hands on quite a few and want to use them on diverter and check valves. But I don't think they are going to have as smooth as a surface for the o-ring if I am just using slip to thread adapters or some other fitting (some of these are narrow and/or have raised text markings around there).

Would you tell me what I can do to permanently fix this union leaking issue? I know probably buy a whole new filter housing but if not should I do anything besides replace this union unit? Its a hayward swimpro LX. Pretty old unit

I’d get an O ring kit and replace the old O rings. While you’re doing that, make sure the equipment pad hasn’t shifted, causing a misalignment of the filter and the unions. While you have the unions out, inspect the bulkheads and bulkhead holes for any hairline cracks.

Alnost all my customers still have Whisperflo's and are not interested in upgrading (I'm a lousy salesman???) Can I use these unions on Whisperflo's instead of 2inch CPVC threaded nipples? have one leaking slightly right now.

Try your local Brick and Mortar shop! I know you can get them at Checker Pools in Phoenix, B&L will have them, Abe’s in Moon valley will have them as well. SCP/Superior pools also carries them.
