    I just finished watching it and it’s exactly the type of love story I can easily connect to

      Agreed. That is why I like it. It is believable.

    The lead characters were young, had separate careers, and had to explore life and build/ increase their self-worth.

    I Don't think this was supposed to be classic romance...highly artistic film tricking us the way a seasonal love does...triggering and making us confront our rose colored glasses needing blindly for this to work ...yet a great lesson of true love vs bittersweet unforgettable unrequited love damn....even throughout the movie the jazz notes giving me JONES....only to suddenly at the end hear the same jazz giving me the BLUES Haaaaa....Great film fulfilled my sensory palate NRAVO 10/10

    They dropped the ball with this one. The cinematography was the best thing about this film. I don’t mind redundancy in romantic films, when it’s coupled with great chemistry. But I couldn’t tell if Stevie had gas or was in contemplation and Kofi couldn’t carry her. I did resent that the scenes were copy and pasted from others we’ve seen. So there was nothing to be impassioned about, the story was redundant, the scene placement was reused, the arcs were generic. I actually got more out of movies like Stomp the Yard and Drumline, bc we dare not compare this to Love Jones or Love & Basketball, for which it so desperately mimicked.

      Well said. The two main characters are beautiful, but the movie failed to keep me entertained. I struggled to finish it over a three day period. We are tired of the same tropes and conflicts!

    • @divaslm1
      @divaslm1 3 года назад +4

      Stevie came from an upper class family. As a law student, she accurately portrayed how reserved and hesistant to get into relationship when her career as a lawyer and parents expectations come in. The movie accurately displays the disparity of clashes in socioeconomic classes between upper class and lower class.

      Is it too much to have a dark skinned self sufficient black man with a job, and a self sufficient dark skinned black woman with a job, that does not involve drugs, guns, dv, interracial, lightskinned/mixed woman pursued by dark skinned man, cheating, jail, unemployed love, or "hood love" that explores LOVE in it's authentic form, where the man pursues the woman they fall in love normally, naturally and peacefully and it has a definite happy ending. Is that a difficult ask?

    • @nnena3631
      @nnena3631 3 года назад +1

      @Error Report I completely understand, it's just the "trials" so called black romance movies usually have are often rooted in negative stereotypes. And the "trials" faced by others in romance movies are more nuanced, cerebral, challenging.
      I have to give it Nollywood for exploring more challenging themes at times, and having a mixed representation. Because sometimes African American movies can be exhausting and present in a negative light. I respect the artistry of the film and the story told. However I am hard-pressed to find an African American film with the criteria I mentioned. I would just love to see something new. If you know of any films with unique themes feel free to mention them.

    What about "Love Jones"? I felt this movie was referencing Love Jones a lot, in it's style and tone. The opening scenes of this movie and Love Jones are very similar. However, I am old school; l did like this film, but Love Jones is the standard for a subtle, believable black romantic film.

    • @blaqcinema

      Love Jones is definitely a standard for black love stories. I just used Love and Basketball, because I think that movie gets more hype over the years. Like the notebook for white love movies

    I liked it. This movie is for anyone that liked Normal People, The Photograph, or Love Jones. For your end question: I like Love & Basketball more than The Notebook. Love & Basketball has better characters. I'm white, but I related a lot more to Love & Basketball, since the main girl is a tomboy.

    • @WilliamsPinch
      @WilliamsPinch 3 года назад +2

      No. If you’re black, you’d probably be tired of these redundant tropes being flung together to masks flat writing and story telling. The photograph and love jones weren’t gross retellings on the same story.

      @@KimBlaQue I know Omar Epps' character is problematic most of the time, but most romance films are heavily one sided. I also like that she is the main athlete at the end and he is with the kid.

      @@WilliamsPinch A lot of romance stories copy something else. A lot of films do this in general. It's tough to make money and they want to make sure they can sell the film.

    I liked this movie. Classic love story set in modern DC. I think the cinematography and music really grounds the film. I thought the leads had good chemistry. I would recommend this film, nice date movie.

    Great review! really enjoyed this movie also-watched it a few times. The only negative thing I would say is the movie played into this false narrative that Black Man are broke. I understand the concept around a struggling artist but at one point there was a scene were she gave Isaiah her debit card to pay for gas🙄.I appreciated seeing his come but it could have been done in another way.

    I know I’m late but I’m just now watching this movie. Honestly I see a lot of people calling the movie trash because of the non perfect ending etc. However, I really loved this movie because it’s meant to not be perfect, it’s meant to be real. This movie touched really good on what it’s like when it’s your first time loving someone truly and when it’s your first time being truly loved. Most of the time it’s really toxic because you both don’t know what your doing. In fact this kind of relationship is the relationship that is meant for a lesson not for a lifetime.which is why the ending is so perfect to me. Most people never really end up with their first real love unless your blessed to do so, and I also like how it ends with her staring at the painting he painted of her while they were together. A lot of the time after relationships are over and we are content with that we tend to look back or think about them without even trying, it’s kind of like those memories are apart of you because they helped shape who you are.

    But that one sex scene in Chicago, after the art exhibit, was hot as hell.
    Just saying.

      Loving someone doesn’t equate to being a pick me. What’s painful is the overusing of words/terms out of context to help perpetuate your misguided view.
