Great look at this thing and a great review as always. You know I always look forward to your arcade reviews! I absolutely love Missile Command. I played it so much in the mid 80s.
I read the book 8 bit Apocalypse about the development of Missile Command. The book said during development the game designer was having nightmares of nuclear warfare.
Finally, the best Arcade game from all classic times. Missile Commands is my favorite Arcade who stay near Pacman, Donkey Kong, Space Invaders and Excite Bike.
I bought the field test edition for the same reasons you did. Back in the day, I actually played the field test edition. Then the regular cabinets started showing up and I was wondering what happened to the bigger Missile Command cabinets, I didn't realize those were just test editions and they scrapped those for the smaller, more simple cabinets.
Your review just sold me on this field test unit. When I saw the overhead control board light up I knew I had to have this. I also don’t mind the CRT lens effect. I saw a video on how to remove it but I plan on keeping this stock because of its uniqueness. Banger cab literally.
I find these replicas fascinating. It's only in the 21st Century that you can make a working replica, because a hi-res screen and solid state computer memory are more compact than they were in the early 80s. Back in the day, there were handheld games, but only with fixed LED's, so they weren't arcade-accurate.
I have Q-Bert and Tempest. I really like both. I’m on the fence about getting this one. I’ve seen people post some issues that aren’t good. I really look forward to your review because I know I can trust your judgement.
I was wondering about that box, when you first posted a pic when it arrived!! Looked huge, with the “this side up” text, but it appeared to be sitting on your desk! I LOVE the tiny quarters. 😻
Great review, that is one beautiful arcade cab, did not know about the test cabinet which did not go to mass market. I have yet to get a Replicade mini cab, was tempted to get their 1942 unit.
Great review Jon. Fantastic timing with the recent release of the new Missile Command Recharged and imminent official release of Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration. Keep up the awesome work :-)
My Dad was the commander of a Nike Missile site in Cleveland in the 60s. When I was a teen he took me to the arcade sometimes and when he found missile command he loved it. he said the game was much better than the Nikes since his battery could only track one target at a time…lol
Another great video Jon! Replicade puts out some awesome units! I have Q*Bert and 1942 and love them both. Since watching this video....I may be picking up this unit in the future too. It would be cool if you could do a review of Tempest from this line. Have a great rest of your year Jon and thanks so much for bringing back the excitement of these games in your videos!!
Great review, as always, Jon. I totally agree with your points. Plays great, for the size. CRT screen effect is just ok. I appreciate them trying something new. It’s just not a home run on execution. I have 5 of these and love them all. Great company. Good value. Next up for me is their Coke machine then Space Ace. Passed on Food Fight, which also has the CRT effect I heard.
Looks amazing, just so expensive. I enjoyed the unboxing as well, I just wished it was a big bigger than would go with my Numskull units. It is impressive.
@@GenXGrownUp I do not like the curved lens. It looks interesting, and I'll have to try it out in the dark later tonight... but right now there is just way too much reflection on that lens. It also makes it hard to see the dark blue cursor on the screen.
Wow, these New Wave Replicades are awesome! I don't own one, but the way they look, feel, the detail, it's like they found a brand new, sealed, original arcade cabinet, shot it with a shrink ray, and sent it to your house! You gave it the elusive 4 tokens out of 5 too. So which game can they produce if it matches the quality of this one, would garner a 5 out of 5 tokens from you?!
Argh! By the time we finally standardize on USB-C something newer & better will come along to re-fracture the electronics market. Please, can't we just all agree that micro-USB is dead? 😁
The CRT on Berzerk is more subdued and creates much less glare. If I could, I'd swap out this lens for the one on Missile Command. Thanks for watching both! 😁
Thanks for the review. I really wanted to get Tempest by New Wave Toys (my ultimate favorite). Looked great with a good screen. Problem: many reviewers did not like the 'spinner' as it turned in discrete movement - not a fluid turn like a loose potentiometer. If you have Tempest did you find this to be a problem? I am actually interested in getting Missile Command though not my favorite; but as you pointed out the controls are very well done and I like track balls! How did you like Tempest as compared to missile command? Thanks, Todd
For sure. No reason you couldn't line 'em up on the bottom of the bezel so you know who's next! 😀 We mentioned that among other arcade etiquette on our show about Free-Play Arcades: genxgrownup.com/bt-126/

I think I followed your exact path: it’s not my favorite arcade game, I bought the field unit, and incredibly impressed by the artwork. What a great-looking mini. (And the non-USB-C jack needs to go.)

Coming from another creator, that is doubly appreciated! Thanks for always being there for me and GXG, Mur. You are, without a doubt, the best. 🥰
The low-missile warning always caught my fancy. That "beep, beep, beep" reminded me of the song "Another One Bites The Dust."
Awesome review, I'm gonna buy this cabinet just because of this review. Very insightful and helpful. Thanks again👍🤙
Glad it was helpful! 😀
Man that art is gorgeous!
Time to get my car wrapped.
Jon, great job. It looks pretty sweet. I was never that good at Missile Command, but it is pretty eye candy for the shelf.
It is pretty. Thanks for watching, and for your support, Michael! f🥰

Thanks, John. I hope the review meets your expectations. 😀
I love having this review available long after it was posted. The price has dropped on these and I am likely to get one.
I love how the track ball works, you can flick it and it rolls for a long time just like the arcade

Will do! Thank you, sir. 🫡
The CRT curvature lens is a really good looking touch. I hope they do this with future games they put out!

I'm seriously thinking about getting this. Or at least putting it on my Xmas wishlist.
If you decide to, please be sure to alert Santa that they're a limited edition and to have the Elves order soon before they're sold out. 🎅
that was high quality stuff Jon and with good info. thanks!
Thanks for watching, Adam. Very glad you enjoyed it. Now go tell 100 friends! 😏

I have this this , its reallly nice, and I'm not a big fan of the CRT curvature but whatever I can live with it. I have Space Ace also.
Why can't these other guys get it right like this? 👍 to Jon as usual.
My Location Test cab arrives tomorrow.🎉
I think you'll enjoy it. Let us know what you think of the curved lens in front of the screen.

It's funny, New Wave Toys Dragons Lair that was just released came with USB C charger, after that I got the Food Fight and it was back to micro usb.

Top notch reviews! Love this game as well. Just saw your replicade berserk review. How does the “CRT” on missile command compare to Berzerk?

Do the miniature quarters at least fit nicely on the cabinet's screen so you know you're next up to play ?

I'm certainly in no danger of hitting a high-scoring bug! I usually made it maybe 3-4 levels tops before I was just out of my element.
How much is it
