  • Gordon leaves the campervan at home for a change and camps at peaceful but chilly Blackwater Lake free recreation site (north of Pemberton, BC) with Henry Wang ‪@cleanerlakes‬ and his dog, Daisy in his Nissan Xterra. He also shares his experience sleeping in the back of an SUV in below freezing temperatures.

In 2014 I worked at Birkenhead Lake Provincial Park as a Park Operator. I came from Germany after finishing school to have a working holiday in Canada for a year.I often spent my time off and my time before and after work down at Blackwater Lake, fishing for trout often with my colleagues who became my friends. I still really miss them sometimes . We’ve spend so much time at the dock you showed in your video. The same wood as almost ten years ago. It must seem like a little thing
to everyone else but knowing that this very wood I have spend so much beautiful time of my youth on still exist really got me emotional.
Thank you dock, thank you Blackwater Lake, thank you to all those beautiful people I have met. Unforgettable, this will always be deep in my heart and soul.
I love Canada and will forever be grateful for the memories made.

I have slept in my suburban many times but I bought a 2019 Leisure Travel van and I love it. Nice to have heat, a bathroom and a refrigerator. And it drives well. I haven’t gotten super comfortable backing it but I getting better

We quite like LTV vans; often thought of the Wonder. All are nice class C’s but this was more about a few quick trips and back and forth on a rough road (and muddy). Kind of reminded me of tent camping, but a little easier. Suspect you will get the hang of backing in soon!

Xterra is a great vehicle for car camping. You can get anywhere in one of those. Hoping to go car camping tonight! Thanks for sharing

I had a 1994 Nissan V6 4x4 pickup, I think might have been same or similar platform to the Xterra. I had a custom canopy and a carpet kit, made for very comfortable camping for many years. Now I’m too old - or at least my knees are - to be climbing in and out of the back of a truck. Those were sure some good times though, especially when I had my two dogs. Many great memories. Thanks for another great video!

Not sure I would want to use the truck too often (have had it for several years, but never camped in it before) but it worked well here…might be something for those rough areas where we can’t take our van. It was surprisingly comfortable once set up and the access though the back door relatively easy; but like a tent everything was a bit cramped. Glad you enjoyed! It was a peaceful place at this time of year (we were there over Halloween).

My son camps out of his VW Golf Wagon just like you did on this adventure. gotta be flexible, eh?
He and his friends seem to go out more in winter than they do in summer...they enjoy solitary, not the crowds.
Tells me he gets that from me! You know what else he gets from me? Firewood.

I (Gordon) actually prefer the off season as well for the same reason. Another popular vehicle we often see folks camping in is a Tesla. Assume the seats must fold flat and as I understand it their models come with a ‘camp mode’ which allows heating and air movement as long as you have more than 20% power. nice! We often refer to them simply as ‘camp cars’ now. While I missed some of the conveniences of the van, the Xterra was simple and efficient for a 2 day trip, plus much better on the muddy road.
