In this video we take a look at a 40 gallon aquarium set up to mimic the natural habitat found at the Minnehaha Creek just outside of Washington, D.C.. Making use of local materials, like rock, sand and leaves, this tank creates a perfect stream habitat for Mosquitofish and Rainbow Darters.

Although it has no plants it still looks beautiful. I can't stop looking at it.
Hello I'm aqua!
@@brandonsaquariumsandterrar8985 nice to see you here :)
Aquascapes are a true form of art.
The way the hardscape cuts off perfectly at the sides of the glass gives it an epic ‘slice of nature’ look
Yes, so true. It replicates nature so well.
Beautiful tank and wonderful message! I used to keep gambusias, crayfish, and tadpoles from the local pond when I was a kid. Something about native environments that is so much more interesting than the common fish store goldfish.
It was vivariums with salamanders and pillbugs for me, but I get it.
Like a Slice of Nature, so relaxing!
Wow! Gorgeous colors in this setup. Thanks for covering it, Alex! 👍
Best example for that aquascaping don't have to be highend-Tech and lot of plants!

Me living at the center of a 30-million-inhabitants concrete wasteland of a metropolis that turned all its rivers and streams into putrid toxic sewers: "Yeah, I guess radioactive mutant capybaras are pretty dope!"
Well yeah that’s dope as hell bro, mutant capybaras?
Cool! Do you have pictures?
Ocean and river conservation is important! ): ♥️
That is a great looking and very interesting tank.
I live in NOVA, and often wanted to make a native tank. This is so beautiful!
Check out the Glen Echo Park Aquarium where this tank is. It’s nearby and great inspiration!
This is my favorite. I loooove hardscape only tanks, and this feels just like the Little Miami river near me. I'd love to set something like this up with some coldwater fish.
would of loved some tannins in the water .. almost too clear .... no complaints its glorious...Bravo 👏
Daww! I love Rainbow Darters, well all etheostoma darters. I will keep some, one day. They certainly are beautiful creatures, especially colored up for breeding season.
I have some rainbow darters. Their tanks needs an upgrade! This is lovely.
What a nice display. Thank you for sharing it.
Looks amazing
Love the biotics looks great
Simply Beautiful 😍 what an absolutely amazing concept!! I really enjoyed the descriptions on this biotope and what makes it so special. Also on all the species of fish that were used!! I hope you're having a wonderful holidays Alex and wishes to you for a happy and blessed New year 🙏🌿🐟🌿💚
Really unique set up Alex... it's an unusual tank but actually very true to situation it replicates.
Thanks for sharing this Alex,
Take care, next time. 👍😊
Awesome video 👌
Very nice work on both your parts. Thanks! I would love to see a long, silent, single shot of this aquarium, with no camera or lens moves!
Beautiful tank. Please consider adding closeups of the fish and aquascape next time. Thank you.
Love it. Wonder if he replaces thre leaf litter as it breaks down
Thats awesome!
Excellent!
amazing work :)
This is so nice! I love this video.
wow.... very impressive . If possible can u plz make a video on the darters . During my stay in USA i watched them closely in Raleigh Science Museum ..... they r very inquisitive and fun to watch ..
Wow
Thanks for sharing this! Was just gathering some rocks and hanging out near a MD creek today! Saw salamanders. Do you know what type of darters are in the tank? Happy New year
says Rainbows, in the description. Hard to tell so far away and out of breeding colors.
They are likely rainbow darters, but it’s hard to know.
🔥
Great video Alex and a tribute to Nick’s talents as well! Given your invitation at the end I strongly recommend Jeremy Monroe’s / Freshwater Illustrated ... first came across his work through Riverwebs Movie. You might want to interview him.
That’s pretty inspirational. Do they change the water temp and leaf litter seasonally or any other dynamics, or is it left at a steady state?
Yep. It changes with the seasons!
The temperature fluctuates a little bit, nothing extreme, there is no heater on the tank so it's just room temperature.
Straight from the scaper’s mouth.
what filter do they use?
A small canister filter. Plumbing is incorporated into the background and is invisible.
👍💓👍
Early gang 😎
love the tank, unfortunately the mosquitofish are are huge pest and classed as an 'unwanted organism' in my country (New Zealand) just shows the danger of an animal in the wrong place!
Absolutely! I don’t think mosquitofish were introduced in New Zealand by the aquarium trade, but there are many fish who are invasive thanks to hobbyists releasing fish. It’s a very dark side of this hobby.

Wow! Amazing! Great Setup and Video!!
WhAt an awesome scape. So clear it’s like a forest floor with floating fish instead of birds.
Very nice biotope.
Thanks
When i heard the name of the biotope it gave me a good laugh
Its strange to see a Biotope with Gambusia in it, they are a ubiquitous pest fish in every creek, dam and Pond where I am from in Victoria Australia, and many other places around the world, they are what I grew up catching and the first aquarium fish I kept.
Minneapolitans in like it's Minnehaha!...wait...DC?
This could easily be one of my favorite tanks shown on this channel to date
Beautiful
Awesome awesome to make it look like the water is even there and so the fish it's like 2 frames in 1
Boy that's a sure is a funny creek huh ?
This is beyond fantastic!! My favorite type of tanks.
Really cool tank!
Beautiful
Very nice!
So is this tank hooked to an auto water change unit or are the leaves and all that fake? I feel like decaying leaves would be beneficial until they become detrimental..do they pull old leaves and replenish with new or?
I vacuum out old leaves and replace with new ones I've collected in the fall, when time allows. The tank is never static, it looks a little different from week to week. This week it's very green with algae, but I like it, it's natural. Next week maybe it's dark with tannins, depending on if I get a water change done.
This is the kind of setup I’ve been wanting to create for a while. I live in Celtral New Jersey (a place that does, in fact, exist). My area is pretty rural and woodsy, and there are a lot of creeks that are fed by the Delaware and Millstone Rivers. We get mosquitofish, darters, banded killifish, blacknose dace, crawfish, and plenty of other interesting aquatic animals. We also have a variety of different deciduous trees that drop their leaves and seeds into the water and make for beautiful botanicals in a tank, and a number of very interesting aquatic and semiaquatic plants that are relatively unknown in the aquarium hobby. I also personally live within walking distance of a beautiful conifer forest, populated mostly by redwood cedar and Norwegian spruce. They both make for great wood hardscape. And, of course, my creeks are all filled with and surrounded by stones that have been eroded and smoothed by the water flow. It all makes for an incredibly inspiring landscape, and a bountiful place to collect from.
I don't know what it is about this scape that just misses the mark for me. Looks like it's missing a couple of semi- degraded plastic bags and a flattened coke can.
I've often thought of doing a pollution scape here at the aquarium to raise awareness of that very problem. Unfortunately it's a small space and it's pretty maxed out. Maybe I'll do one outside someday but it would have to be temporary or heated in the winter.
Wow, you must be great to hang around with . . .
