  • The Tragic End of Jack Tatum, the Most Brutal Defender in NFL History
Jack Tatum was one of the most formidable hitters in the NFL, acting as a true Pro Bowl-worthy safety. Tatum terrorized opponents with his punishing blows. His intimidating presence helped transform the Oakland Raiders into one of the most feared teams of his era. Recognized by NFL Films as the sixth hardest hitter in NFL history, Tatum was selected for three Pro Bowls and holds the record for the longest fumble return in NFL history, a feat that was only matched 28 years later.
For many, Tatum's career will only be truly complete when he is included in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. However, many believe that this honor will never be granted to him due to a tragic incident during a preseason game when one of his hits left New England Patriots receiver Darryl Stingley paralyzed from the neck down.

Then the next…they added Donnie Shell and Jim Allen as backups. They were not as dirty as Oakland but actually better in coverage.

Jack was a misunderstood man. Off the field, he was polite, well spoken and quite intelligent. The culture of football at the time was quite brutal. Very few hits other than late hits were illegal. The Stingley hit was tragic. But, it was a legal hit and within the boundaries of play at the time. There was no defenseless player rule at the time. Sure he wrote a book, it was ill advised. Later in life, he stated he was sorry for what happened to Darryl Stingley. But, he would not apologize for the way he played. It was a job. He performed it well. It unfortunate he lost a leg due to diabetes and eventually passed on due to a heart attack and complications of diabetes. He started several charities and one was to combat diabetes. He was no bad man and never malicious off the field

@@spiroclimb2523 but it is that simple. Out of 1000 player, 999 get back up. The angle Stingley fell down at was unfortunate, tragic. Football culture is you practice how you play. A good team is going to practice hard so games are easy. Jack has the unfortunate personality traits which were ingrained at the time of stoicism which is not showing sorrow when bad things happen, doing a job that he was bound to do and having a tell it like it is and treat all things as what they are or were. He was raised this way along with almost everyone else. George Atkinson said that play tore Jack up inside privately. These are the reasons I give Jack the benefit of the doubt regarding this. He was doing his job if Stingley wasn't hurt on that play, Jack would have been applauded. It's the nature of the beast. He could not have known or predicted the angle Stingley would come down at. Jack also has to make a snap decision and the results were catastrophic

I’m with you. When he was was questioned about Stingley ‘s situation his answer was about how he played football, not what happened to Stingley. I’m sorry, but most of the time he was a cheap shot head hunter who always used his helmet and tackled high.

Jack should be in the Hall of Fame. What happened to Darryl Stingley was an accident, maybe caused by him lowering his head. You can't keep him out because of that. Did they keep Lawrence Taylor out because he ended Joe Theisman's career? No. Case closed.

... Any of us who ever suited up knows that football is a GLADIATOR SPORT. Back then the sport was extremely brutal and it was a game of survival of the fittest. The hit, as brutal as it was, was legal. Tatum played the game the only way he knew how. Not dirty...BRUTAL. The video states that he attempted to contact Stingley, BUT THE FAMILY WOULDN'T LET HIM... At the end pf the day, we all knew the risks and unfortunately Mr. Stingley was caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. Clearly Tatum suffered through this over the following years and it took a toll on him as well. Both men chose to play this game. Along with boxing, two of the most savage sports in the modern day world at the time... Both suffered for their choices. Both are excused. The silver lining is that the current day NFL has tried to adopt new rules and strategies to keep this sort of thing from happening, with some success. But at that time when these two played, it was a KILL ..OR BE KILLED KIND OF GAME. It wasn't a game of apology. Those of you who played... KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT.

Yes, absolutely 💯. That's how the game was played, and it was a legal hit, even by today's rules. They should both be in.. right next to each other with a video telling their story!! Both great players. 🏆

Jack Tatums hit on Sammy White in Super Bowl 11 is the best hit I have ever seen. I don't think Jack meant to hurt anyone. He meant to make quarterbacks think twice about throwing the ball over the middle of the field.

Jack Tatum was a great player! A HOFer is debatable. As a youngster I saw all of the controversial hits. To me I thought he went beyond excessive. The Stingley, the Swan and the White hits may have been legal then but none of them would be today. And that’s why I believe the voters of today won’t put Jack in! I believe that they think Tatum was somewhat dirty and over the top in the hits he made.
