- The iCloud beta allows iCloud+ subscribers to set up a custom email domain for iCloud Mail. In this walkthrough, I show you step-by-step how to add the necessary DNS records to your domain registrar to get iCloud email working with your very own custom domain. Please keep in mind that, at the moment, this is a beta feature. Your mileage may vary. Full tutorial: 9to5mac.com/20...

I just did this, but wished I'd watched this first! My morning would have gone a lot easier.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! First of all, it was easy to listen to you bc your voice has a nice calming quality. Secondly, you must know I'm a NOT an internet guru. In fact I'm an idiot!!! But 2 hours later, I have listened to your tutorial and figured it out (even with a different domain provider who did not use nor call MX the same thing that you did so I had to listen to other tutorials to understand that MX means Mail Settings! I've really been educated! Thank you again! Now I'm going to attempt to add a 2nd business email address. Haha! Let's see how much I truly comprehended!
I've been using this feature with two of my domains for a few weeks now and it works great.
Kinda worried that it'll reset itself after it's out of beta, but it'll be pretty easy to setup again I think.
I set mine up that was in Google and it sends mail from my custom domain but does not receive anything. All dns settings look correct. Anything special you had to do?
How is the instant notifications? Are you getting your emails right away? And which service provider are you using for your custom domain?
I never thought I'd be seriously considering dropping googles ecosystem and moving to apple. Good job legacy migration/shutdown team!
Great video tutorial! I tried setting up my email several times, but kept receiving an error when confirming my email address. I skipped that step, and followed your instructions and it worked perfectly. Thanks!
J'ai débloqué mon icloud je l'apprécie vraiment l'essayer maintenant
When I add the period, it’s asking me to enter valid email server 😢
More of less how I expected it to work, but I appreciate being able to see the process before I start it.
Wao, amazing video, thank you so much Jeff you are a 🐐
great job Jeff apple make create custom domain so simple
How would you add that "alias" to Outlook?
A great tutorial , I will follow the steps you have shown when it’s available to the public, thank you
really useful, I didn’t understand a single thing on Apple’s instructions
Great video. I'd love to have phone numbers to be as flexible and portable as email.
Thanks Jeff, you did a stellar job of explaining this feature! Amit is very happy👍
Thanks Jeff! Most useful RUclips video in a long time.
Awesome video as always, Jeff!
you're a godsend thanks for the input jeff
Hey, my MX records never pass even tho i've set it up as per instructed by Apple. How long did it take you for them to update? If I WHOIS my domain I can see them MX records that are matching the requirement given by Apple.
I chose Hover based on the recommendation by this video btw.
Thanks for the walkthrough, but what about migration from, say, 365 or Gmail? What's your recommended process?
Would like to know this too
Same here. Have mine on Gmail servers and I absolutely hate Google. Too buggy and confusing. Need to migrate two of my emails to iCloud from Gmail.
@@wrightstudiosllc I'm stuck in the middle of this now. Confusing as hell.
I am not an expert, but if your domain email domain is pointing to Microsoft or Google and you want to point it to Apple Account instead, then you need to log into your CPanel which is where you bought the domain from (eg GoDaddy). Then you update the MX Records, etc., so it points to where you want your Email Domain Hosted. Correct my understanding is wrong.
Hi! Is there a way to separate mailboxes of icloud default mail address and the custom domain one? I don't like the fact that they're coming into the same inbox.
Now as you have created new custom email address but I want to sign in on android device or friends iPhone now using that email address. Can I do that?
Contact the number above for quick help fast and help ❤
I am from Brazil and worked perfect here. Thanks!! 🙂👍
Make sure your DNS matches 9:06 exactly, it should work within minutes, not 72 hours. Hover had pre-loaded values which I had to delete to make it work (this cost me 2 days of waiting & 1hr+ of refreshing & frustration.
Thank you for creating this video! Very useful & valuable information. Thanks so much!
No wildcard support is what’s preventing me from going all in with this.
Great guide for setting this up! Thanks for posting this, I found it really helpful.
Still tied to iCloud servers in a sense, but definitely still cool. I will be setting this up soon.
This is all good! But, How do you set up email accounts for the family?
This is what I have been looking for! Thanks Jeff!
Question: we have one Android user in a family that otherwise uses iPhones. If purchase a domain name for my family and use it for iCloud+ mail, would it be possible to use the domain for other email services as well for other users, or can it only be used for iCloud+?
Okay you really need to update this video. I tried adding the new updated DNS records to hover and iCloud keeps saying "Check your SPF record". not to mention, Hover is not accepting the quotation marks Apple says to add to the record.
Nice I really do like the way you present that I’ll probably follow you for a while here
We have seven email address at our current domain for our family. Does iCloud custom domain allow this many email addresses?
Exactly the video i need! Thanks so much for this!!
Great video👍, I just created my custom email address, Thanks!
I basically did what your video says. However, the process is confusing. It is not on beta anymore.I spent lots of time with apple support to move a domain for a custom email address with Icloud and after a long time spent, because even the senior advisors at apple don't know much how to do it, i was able to transfer and create a custom email account, it but now i can only send emails but not receive. They have not figure it out and it takes a day or two to get an expert to help. Very dissapointed! Now I do not have email available for who knows how long.
My main issue with this is they they don't have a catch-all option yet and no DMARC which to me is hugely important. It would be nice if they allowed more than 3 addresses per domain per person. However, I would be willing to downsize providing they did have a catch-all and DMARC. I use a pretty expensive service right now that I really enjoy but having everything all within the ecosystem I currently use would save some money for sure.
Hi Jeff, great video! What should I do if I use a CDN (e.g., cloudfare) with my existing domain (registered with google domain) that is hosted with a provider (e.g., bluehost)? How do I set up custom email on Apple Mail in that case?
Any option to use icloud email as a shared inbox with another icould user (family member)?
Thank you for the Great tutorial video!!!
it should be noted that using Outlook does not handle the use of the custom email domains. If there is a solution I would sure like to know it. Thanks for the setup instructions.
Here's a question:- custom domain works saperate from our main iCloud address. Or it just clone everything to our main icloud domain. Little bit of confusion. Cause m365 and workspace are saperate services from consumer version. And also wanted to know if personal icloud storage works on that or we have to purchase iCloud storage saperate for our custom domain.
After creating a custom domain email in iCloud servers, how can I sign into my email via a third party app?
The app ask about “IMAP server” and “port”
What should I do?
Nice one Jeff - Can you set your custom mail account to be in a separate folder? Making it easier to see which email was sent to your original iCloud vs New Custom Domain?
That's what I want to know too! I don't want personal and business emails to be all mixed together. Did you mange to find out anything?
I got the same question :(
Same question here… all the email accounts you set up are tied to the iCloud folder everywhere… hopefully this can be an iOS / iPadOS 17 feature, until then, I reckon I’m gonna get back to Google Worksuite; I hate Google, but it’s the only way to keep separated folders within mailboxes, personal, business and so on. With iCloud mail custom domain you can set up to 3 different accounts per domain, but all of them go to the same inbox, same send messages folder and so on… Please Apple fix this! We wanna leave Google…
No, you cannot. You can make a filter, I guess… but you can’t have a whole separate system. You also cannot use it with any third-party apps.
U are the goat 🐐 thank you 😊
Do you get email included with that $14 or is it extra? Looks like it’s an extra $20?
No you don't. To get a domain and email with Hover its $35 for the first year then it goes up...
Awesome video! So helpful! Thank you 🙂🙃
Jeff - I could set up my custom email domain on mail app without going through this process. I could easily use the bluehost incoming and outgoing servers to set up custom email domain on mail or outlook app. not sure how this feature of icloud help
so if I want to use my custom domain emal with the Mail app I need to pay?
AWESOME JEFF many thanks
Amazingly explained.
Just to be clear. I already pay for a domain and hosting services. Does it mean that I can give up the expensive hosting services and use this instead? iCloud seems significantly cheaper. Will it work as long as I continue paying for my domain? And if so, will I have to update all the information in my email app (BlueMail)? I worry that I will do something wrong and end up with no business email. I signed up for the hosting services years ago, because I wanted to have a website, but now I realize that what I really want is just a business email and it's simply unreasonable to pay so much for the website I don't need. Or can you use iCloud to host your website, too?
Awesome video, really well explained.
I could not figure this out with google domains? Can you help me ?
had to get online with google support and they fixed it
Do you have a video, "how to set up an iCloud email" and send/receive via an iPhone or Mac?
So this is the same as if i would use a gmail mail adress and add it into apple mail and write an E-Mail from there, the difference is that with my custom domain i don‘t have an server?
All those Apple Products Jeff has 🤤
Just because of work. If I didn’t do this for work, I’d probably have a MacBook Air, iPhone mini, iPad Air, and watch. That’s about all anyone really needs tbh, if that.
Great tutorial, thank you 😊
So if you have multiple domains and multiple emails…..they all go into the iCloud email? They are all mixed together? How do you tell them apart?
Would doing this mess up the website I have the domain pointed to? I don't want to change the settings and cause my website to go offline
Can this all be done on my iPhone ?
I would like to set my own domain to my email and I can't use this option.
Every time I tried to click "Manage" on the settings page I got the message "Custom Email Domain could not be loaded at this time"
any suggestion?
What’s the benefit of this? Can you use access this email outside of mail app? Does it forward mails sent to this address to your icloud email or how does that all work?
what happens to my previous mails if i move my custom mailadress to or from icloud mail?
Mine says i need to wait for 24 hrs until the domain is verified by apple, i was wondering; Do you need to “host” something on that domain to get verified ? Or you simply buy a domain without hosting coz whoever browses to that domain is not gonna find anything except that 404 Error 😅
Does anyone know if doing this to a current iCloud email address (one I've been using since 2014) affects things? As in, if I were to change it to have my custom domain at the end, would all my emails from 2014 to present still exist and would I still be able to send/receive from the same place? Also, I created my custom domain with Wix, so is the process any different to using Hover?
Thank you. Best regards.
I have waiter overnight and I am still getting the Check your MX record error, can someone help?
Did you get this sorted?
@@stephankriel1188 no, I didn’t, can you help?
Wow, thats great. Can i add this custom mail to an Others mail program with IMAP?
I'm using Google Domains, and for the txt section, it says the host name is already in use. any ideas on how to fix this?
Super helpful. Missing Jeff at 9to5Mac.
Someone knows how can I edit the photo and name associated to the custom email?
Should we buy the hosting too???
Timely, with Google’s new pricing for grandfathered accounts
I have namecheap and my settings are very different, I'm advanced DNS and don't see those things, MX and TXT are in two different areas as well. Ughhhhh
I have iCloud plus and when I try to set it up it takes me to a guide. I never get the custom email domain screen that shown in the video. Do you know what’s going on? I’m on the latest beta with iCloud+
Hey check us out,👆👆👆 your help is granted
Solve the problem, I was logging into iCloud with the wrong email. That’ll do it every time. Lol
Great if you want ALL your personal and business emails lumped into one folder, otherwise don't bother as it's a mess and only half thought through. If you have a website it's far better to use a proper domain email provider where you can forward the emails to your personal email (or use their own mail app) and in the same process re-direct them to its own named folder.
Any idea how to set this up for people in your ‘family’?
can you sort your custom domain emails that come in with a different folder.
how do I back up all my emails over to the iCloud? I have 3 emails on another email server?
can more than on person use the same domain? like a corporate email?
How would I go about changing my domain from Only You to You and your Family?
Dead simple! Exemplary tutorial! You rock Jeff!!!
so is this to how you would setup a Outlook exchange domain account?
Can you make a custom email domain your primary email in regards to your Apple ID?
gmail shutdown ?
this is youtube
Very good video. Instructions are clear. Followed all instructions and information given by Apple (and this video), but after more than 24 hours I'm still getting "Check your MX record". I'm also using Hover and everything else seems fine. When doing a host lookup from Terminal (e.g. using commands like "dig" and "host"), I can confirm all details are correct.
I am moving my email hosting from google to iCloud as I thought I might be saving some money as the iCloud solutions is cheaper, but I'm beginning to think it's now a case of "you get what you pay for". There's a reason it's cheaper.
Anyway, I've tried everything possible but to no avail. I have now opened a support case with Apple. In the meantime, I'm not receiving any emails, so any advice would be appreciated.
I got this sorted. The dns records I set in Hover was ignored as it was controlled by the dynamic dns service I was using for my domain....which I completely forgot about as it was set up years ago :D Once I disabled the dynamic dns service, the records in Hover took effect and I could instantly verify it on Apple's side and complete the set up.
I am having the exact same problem.
is setting icloud DNS on hover free?
I already have a email address. Will the old mails be available on iCloud ?
Great tutorial Jeff! Thank you so much for this. One question tho. Can anyone explain why when I add the “period” to the end of the MX values on GoDaddy, it doesn’t stay after I save the changes? I keep getting a Check your MX record message on iCloud. Please help!!
I am having the same issue
@@rei_mikeg It’s been 3 days and I’m still getting the same message. I’ve tried everything and nothing works.
@@WeirdohBeardoh 30 min call with GoDaddy and it ended with them saying they can't add the period. Very annoying. They recommended I change the host to the @ symbol for both MX records instead of my domain name, and give it 24-48 hours. I did that and it no longer says "check MX record," it says "check your SPF record" like in this video.
If this doesn't work I'll get a refund from GoDaddy and use the host site from this video. Hopefully this works!
@@rei_mikeg Ok thanks Michael. I’ll try that. Appreciate the reply. Fingers crossed. Good luck.
@@rei_mikeg Just tried putting the @ symbol and now I get the same Check your SPF record so fingers crossed. 🤞🏼
Hi Jeff. Great clear video. i currently have a custom domain that is hosted by Google. can i transfer the hosting to Apple using the iCloud option? I have iCloud +
I want to know this also. I am with Godaddy currently
Gmail is shutting down G-Suite Legacy, contemplating this!!
Anyone recommend this?
Don’t get register your domain with any weird registrar. Some charge to add things like TXT records! It’s ridiculous. I’ve only seen it a few times working with clients but it seems to be more common in Australia.
Who’d you recommend mate?
Any idea how it works with calendars?
In my 40 years of using computers, I can't say I've had as much trouble setting anything as I am with this. (Granted, Wordstar was absolute hell.) So far I haven't made it work. The relevance of the "A" values should have been mentioned in this video. I've deleted the one that showed, and I'll be damned how to get it back as it should be --- if it should be.
Awesome! Thank you so much for explaining this, you’re great!
Can i add this mailbox to outlook app?
Potential dumb question - but do you have to purchase the email options when registering your domain, if you are only buying the domain to use for email through iCloud+?
Hey there.!! No, you need not to buy email options. You can just buy the domain and still setup custom email domain through apple.
it won't add my domain in iCloud! When I do, it says "There was a problem adding this domain. Try again later."
