I read somewhere that a major drawback of the P38 was that it could be identified much easier, and at longer ranges, than single seat fighters. Identification friend or foe is the first stage of air combat. Especially in real life!
That is very much the case in the sim too. If you see a high contact and it trails two contrails or you get a good look at the profile you know very very early on what the enemy aircraft can and cannot do. Fighting in the 38 is not easy.

Really liked the video. I haven’t played this game since launch and decided to start playing it again. Two of my favorite planes in real life are the P51 Mustang and P38 Lightning. I will definitely pick this expansion up as soon as I get my HOTAS setup and learn how to play the game again. Thanks again and I did like and sub.

Great overview, thanks! I am particularly interested in the degree to which speed is adversely affected by being out of trim in a P-51. Do you believe that the effect is greater for the P-51 in a given configuration than it is for other similar aircraft in the sim?

4:46 "damage model isn't very kind to the 47..." Wow, what a shock. Another example of sims at odds with history. The Bolt's ability to absorb punishment is well documented, including having engine cylinders shot away and surviving, or in the case of Robert Johnson and Don Blakeslee, holed by 20mms, coated in oil and still coming home. Of course I get that a hit in the right place can be fatal, but too often I see wings shot off by the first burst, even when the target is a B-17.
And also regarding the P-47: it had a fantastic roll rate at altitude, something I've never seen in any sim so far. Robert Johnson in "Thunderbolt!" described how he scored a kill by rolling inside a turning 109, sure that he shocked the enemy pilot who probably thought it was impossible for that big Jug to maneuver inside him and get his guns on him.
I know it's called a simulator for a reason, and I enjoy watching many of these, but I'm also switching off more because they seem to be getting more predictable...almost like a Hollywood car chase.
They reworked the DM quite a bit by now. You can knock out cylinders and all that. The 47 sustains way more damage.

@@SheriffsSimShack Huh, the more you know. I couldn't see a premium version of it, but there is a lot of add ons and i just looked at the normal battle of Bodenplatte since i thought there is only one. Thank you for clarifying ^^

I read the P38 was the first plane to experience troubles with Air compressability when achieving massive dive speeds, this was something I didn't even come across in the Dora and only In the Schwalbe. This makes it interesting for me to hear that its much slower than most other aircraft.
But then again, I may have read wrong?
Problems with compressibility arent only caused by speed but by design. Mostly that the airflow over wings and surfaces reaches the speed of sound earlier than the aircraft it self. The 38 had extreme problems with that phenomenon

P 38 and the Tempest is the best Planes
P51H debuted 3 Feb, 1945 with top speed of 487mph. P51B/C 440mph & the D variant 437mph. It held it's own against the dumb dora & k4 they had a top speed increase over the P51 of only 10 - 15 mph. That's not really that much. Especially since we outnumbered them too. Not to mention rhat the P47M & N & F4U4's & 5's, F8F were at 460+ mph. Up to 487mph as I recall. Point being, they shouldn't have fucked with the U.S.A.

In Warthunder I could never really figure out how to fly the Typhoon and the Tempest. Is it a Energy Fighter, a Boom & Zoomer, a Turnfighter? It always seemed so half baked, neither fish, nor meat to me. In Warthunder too it is fast in a straight line, but that doesn't help you much in actual combat, at least not in that game, because there you can't really sneak up on people and being good at running away doesn't help with actually getting kills.
Brother, this is a very late response. If you're still curious, I'll try to help you. I've played quite a bit of WT, but I used to also play a game called Aces High. It has the Temp and Tiff in it as well. The things are monsters, as long as you can keep them fast. Your issue is that you're not playing in sim. There are some aircraft that are basically made to played in sim. The Tiff and Temp are two of them. There are no super obvious markers for what opponents are, or how far they are. There are fairly obvious dots to spot long range contacts tho. It's an environment where being fast and sneaky are actually usable traits and create a monster of an aircraft that when flown right is nearly untouchable. You can also switch over to its actual role (ground pounding) very easily to earn extra shiny cats and lightbulbs when no ones really around for you to be stalking.
If you want a similar experience to cut your teeth on in sim I suggest the He-100, as much as I hate fighting them in Sim EC 1, they live and die by their speed and ability to keep it up. Flown well you will learn the basics swiftly, how to maneuver in a way to be less visable, how to make those few moments of firing time matter, how to peel off properly to avoid return snap shot return fire. Get a wingman if you can, a pair of He-100s doing constant boom and zoom runs on br 1.0 to 2.0 aircraft is beyond monstrous and you will get called a lot of bad names, but you will learn.
Also, look up fighter tactics by shaw, it's a bit clinical of a read, but it should give you a better hand than I ever could in a youtube comments section.
I just wish this game wasn't a required package deal with Battles of Stalingrad on Steam.

@@zetetick395 FC does have 2 SP campaigns now. It's a bit of an insult to say like Train Sim, there are constant updates/improvements to releases even 5 years later we're getting fixes/improvements regularly. Train Sim has a release it and move on model, they don't support old releases.

The tempest inna dive is evil i was able to chase down and shoot down a me 262 he kept diving (not smart with a tempest behind you)

Leider ist der Aufwand viel zu groß für eine zu kleine Zielgruppe. Ich habe das in der Vergangenheit mal probiert, aber es war leider nicht erfolgreich und extrem Zeitaufwendig

I post my question here, because I can't find the answer elsewhere.
Since I'm playing IL2 from the beginning of the serie to the last game and DLC, I always wondered why in this game you have the possibility to play with different levels of complex engine management and other stuffs but you can't reach the real max specification ceiling and speed of ANY given aircraft ?
I am playing with automated engine management, but in every game the max ceiling I could reach was under the real specifications. Lately in Stalingrad or Kuban I tried and managed over a long time of accelerated soft climbing to reach 9000m with Me 109 or FW190, but at 200 km/h almost stalling and with a lot of compensation upward with the stick (under the max ceiling and far under the top indicated speed at this level).
For example, the FW 190D9 could climb to 12000 m and the TA 152 15000m at 760 km/h.
For any real aircraft the max speed is at the highest ceiling, as opposed in the game.
I doubt it is because I don't manage myself the engine. The game automated option should do the same.
Does anybody knows why and if the devs have given any explanation about that ?

I personally was flying at 12000m with a e-7 once. That was in winter. I am sure that the planes can reach that alt. And yes the auto engine control is likely the cause
p47 is very slow what am i doing wrong? ww2 pilots said nothing could out dive it? this can not take a hit which is not historically accurate. Help. Mean while the Russian warplanes I fly are Swiss cheese and keep flying.

and the 47 can take quite a punishment my now. They adusted the damage model a while back. However at the stage where 47s are flying the germans have quite an array of good guns on their aircraft. Mulitple 20mm, 30mm and 13mm. There is not a chance that a 47 survives a good volley from those. No aircraft does.
Thé P-47D-28 is not true to it’s real performance and there have been many requests to fix this glorious plane but it’s gone to deaf ears which is why I am not at all excited about the Normandy Razorback. The développer shouldn’t release planes that are not realistic. Unless they fix the P-47D-28 I won’t be buying the Normandy map.
You must be joking?! The developers boosted most allied planes as fuck and you want a brick to be improved? 😂 what do you think that the P51 could do in a real dogfight against 109? Exact, get help of more p51s
