    To all the people whinging about just going out and buying this tool, I did that, and then had to modify it exactly like this because it wasn't deep enough for the valves in the tanks, so hey maybe cut the guy a little slack since if you are forced into doing the work anyway, you might as well just make one like this AND ALSO end up with a much better tool with a much better handle on it.

      Exactly most people don’t understand that fine point that typical car valve stem removal tools will not work!

  • @sdharding7483

    By loosening (unscrewing) the relief valve to vent the 1 lb tank, you just changed the pressure that the safety relief valve will open. The pressure that the relief valve opens is set by the tension on the spring in the valve. The spring tension (and relief pressure) is adjusted by the amount the Schrader valve is screwed into the tank. Take the valve out of an empty tank and see how it works. Once you mess with the relief valve setting, the tank may either prematurely vent, releasing propane and potentially causing a fire, or prevent the tank from venting causing the tank explode.

      Although you’re absolutely correct the threaded body of the valve bottoms out at the bottom which ensures proper depth and pressure relief setting. Problem I’ve had is the tool is critical to be able to get a very solid engagement with the threaded body and allow you to feel when the bottoming out happens when tightening it back in.

      If you knew anything about these valves you would know that 90% of valve stem removal tools will not work on the Coleman bottles. You’re correct in saying that they’re valve stem removal‘s but finding one for under five bucks that will work on a Coleman bottle is unlikely. Their center rod sticks up way high so the fingers on the removal tool have to be extremely long to engage the threaded body

    The propane valve works the opposite of a car stem. On the car stem you push the center to let out air, on the propane tank you pull up on the center

    By overfilling the tanks beyond 80% with liquid propane by venting the propane gas out from the safety relief valve may renders this valve useless. If the liquid propane is too full, it may impede the valve. It is designed to vent propane gas, not the liquid form. That 20 percent is allowed for expansion and vented out if the tanks are under pressure. Eventhough it is very unlikely and difficult for a propane tank to explode or implode there is always a chance for BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapour Explosion) to occur, it would require alot of heat. Regardless, he would be putting himself and his family at a slightly higher risk which could be prevented. And by adjusting and playing around with the safety relief valve can damage it and may not work as it was designed to as it may change the specified psi rating or not work at all. To vent any remaining gas from the tank, depress the main stem valve and best to leave the safety relief valve alone.

    • @BillSaltbush
      @BillSaltbush 5 лет назад

      ditto.
      It's a SAFETY relief valve.
      If you want it to protect you and your family from a life threatening malfunction, don't poke, prod or mess with it . . . EVER!

    so how can i fill the gas canister with air from a compressor?

    • @johnstreet819
      @johnstreet819 3 года назад

      Since that yellow tank contains M.A.P.P. gas and not propane why would you refill it with the wrong fuel? Also what is the point of messing with the Scrader valve at all? There might be a fitting you can cobble together to put compressed air in a propane cylinder, but why? Compressed air usually has some water vapor in it which will rust the tank from the inside. It will look fine until it explodes.

    • @TotoGuy-Original
      @TotoGuy-Original 3 года назад

      @@johnstreet819 why is because i want a portable air tank to take in the house for blowing stuff out. my compressor is 25 metres away from the house and i dont want to buy those aerosol cans when i got a perfectly good compressor i can fill something for virtually no money.
      i know about rusting the inside because i have a compressor so im fully aware of that but having said that my air gets double filtered anyway so it would be quite minimal and i can change the tank every time i run a map gas bottle out.

    It is a valve removal tool and you can already buy one that is made for it pretty cheap. I guess if you don't have one or can't find it you could go through the effort to make one out of an old screwdriver in a pinch. Just don't see the point unless your time isn't worth that much or you just need it right now when you can go buy it already made for probably cheaper. I have several from when I was turning wrenches as a career.

      Just like I stated in my comment. If you don't have the time and need it right now. I use it all the time so it was worth it for me to buy one, but I have had to make them in the past myself. I just prefer the longer one I purchased that is hardened and will hold up to the amount of valve stems I have to use it on. I didn't say it wasn't worth it if you have the time and need it right now.

    What's the purpose of opening the valve?

    • @rickjwilliams
      @rickjwilliams 6 лет назад +1

      The purpose of opening this valve is to bleed off excessive air in the tank/canister when refilling it. And allow more gas to be transferred. However, this step is usually not necessary, just put the refill tank/canister in your freezer for about 20-30 min before trying to refill it. The difference transferring warmer gas in a larger tank into a colder one will make the refill tank/canister accept the gas more readily. Thus eliminating the bleed off process. The official statement from Berzomatic is that propane canisters from their company are not to be refilled. You, and/or persons wanting to refill their propane tank/canister(s) should exercise caution when doing so. Overfilling a propane tank/canister can weaken the welded seams on the tank/canister and can eventually, and possibly cause sympathetic explosive detonation. Thus, really ruining your day, week, month, year!..Yeah, you get the message.

    • @brik32544
      @brik32544 6 лет назад +3

      All propane and butane cylinders should not be filled more than 80% of the volume. That is why the valve has a long stem in many cylinders; to ensure that when it reaches 80% liquid instead of gas vents from the valve. They don't want you to refill them for marketing reasons but also for legal liability reasons. Refillable cylinders need to be regularly pressure tested. I have cylinders that were built in the 70s and they are as good as new. Never fill a partially full cylinder and ALWAYS weigh the empty cylinder so that after filling you can confirm that you have added NO MORE than 465g of propane
