- Chad Kroeger interview - Part 1/3 (Stockholm, Sweden, May 27th 2017) By Tobbe at www.metalcovenant.com (This video has created quite a buzz and is the original film where Chad Kroeger of Nickelback bashes Stone Sour and Slipknot's Corey Taylor.) -----About a week after being published I thought I might share some details about it: 1. The reason why I answered "Stone Sour" to his question at 8.35 is that I a couple of weeks prior to this interview did one with Josh Rand of Stone Sour and we talked a lot about the diversity in their music and I have also listened to their album Hydrograd quite a lot. 2. There is no hidden agenda behind this, in order to get Chad to say those words. It's utterly his decision to say what he wants and he knows very well that it will be published.

If by ''diverse'' you mean ''trend-hoping chart chasers", then sure. For all the shit some cornballs give Nickelback for being a shitty rock band, they at least never traded their guitars and drums for 808 kick drums and shitty piano samples written in F major. Linkin Park became a joke long before Nickelback. And also, Nickelback have a solo from Dimebag fucking Darrel on one of their songs. Nickelback has a couple of songs that aren't similar to most of the others, but they definitely have a set style 99% of the time.
Meanwhile, Stone Sour is inherently diverse, songs like 30-30-150, Orchids, Get Inside, Idle Hands, Made of Scars and Say You'll Haunt Me have a trend of being melody driven, but they don't follow an archetype, which Nickelback songs almost *always* do.
And I'm saying this as someone who likes Nickelback and owns 3 records which I think are quite good. I've even seen them live and reckon they're great live. Mind you, Kroeger is full of shit on Nickleback being diverse at all, nevermind more diverse than Slipknot or Stone Sour.

Avenged Sevenfold is a pretty diverse band... probably more diverse than Nickelback. They have songs like “So Far Away” “MIA” “Sieze the Day” “I won’t see your tonight Pt. 1” and then they have “Bat Country” “Beast and the Harlot” “Scream” “Nightmare” “Afterlife” ...then they do progressive metal with “The Stage”... more diverse in my opinion than Nickelback. (This is coming from someone who actually likes Nickelback (yes I know crucify me))

Umm dude, know your enemy. Stone Sour was started by Corey in the 90's, but him and Jim ended them to go work on Slipknot. But during the Iowa era, Corey wanted to go do more things than the death/groove metal of Slipknot. So, he brought Stone Sour back. Also, a song like Taciturn is more heartfelt than Far Away which was made to make a cheap radio hit.
I am a fan of Nickelback, Stone sour and Slipknot, Slipknots music is awesome the masks are just there to look awesome while making f*cking good music

The hero we deserve
It's incredible how a dumb trend can cloud people's minds, Corey Taylor started it all because it turns out that Roadrunner Records paid more attention to Nickelback than Slipknot, this is because Chad was and is a hit-making machine, while Slipknot is a noise-making machine, when Slipknot realized that making noise wasn't bringing them profits, they started incorporating melodic vocals, and that's when they really blew up as a band (All Hope Is Gone), Stone Sour had to do the same thing: make more melodic songs with clean vocals. In other words, Corey Taylor's only talent is that his voice hasn't broken from all the screaming and noise he makes, for everything else, he had to copy Nickelback formula, and not even fully. To get attention, he has to act like the bad guy; otherwise, he would be completely irrelevant today. If Chad says Nickelback is diverse, it's because it's true, Nickelback has done Grunge (Curb, Little Friend, Where?), Metal (Because Of You, This Means War, Feed The Machine, The Betrayal Act III), Groove Metal (Side Of A Bullet), Country (Rockstar, Cowboy Hat, Good Times Gone), Hard Rock (Burn It To The Ground, Animals, How You Remind Me), Alternative Rock (Photograph, When We Stand Together, Song On Fire), Pop Rock (She Keeps Me Up, Get 'Em Up, What Are You Waiting For). So cry all you want, Nickelback is by far a thousand times better than anything Corey Taylor does, but if you insist on listening to the garbage Corey makes, go ahead, though you must be pretty messed up in the head to do so.
Ok Nickelback is really not diverse, coming from someone who likes their music. Listen to Next Go Round, Midnight Queen, and Animals and tell me they aren't repetitive. Or listen to Photograph, Someday and Savin' Me. And even if Corey's honestly kind of an arrogant prick too, he was completely right in this feud. He even responded by saying that the other members of Nickelback are cool guys, it's just Chad that he can't stand. Chad even went as far as saying that Corey can't write a hit song, which is just complete bullshit. Corey has managed to write several hit songs in his musical career. So Chad is definitely in the wrong here for stating complete bullshit.
I have to disagree, I cant think of a band more formulaic than Nickelback. Slipknot started as a bunch of angsty kids who were angry with nowhere to go and had crazy talent. They just had to learn how to refine it. You may say slipknot was just making noise but that's what our forefathers said about Chubby Checker, Elvis, Johnny Cash, Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest(the list goes on) I would compare them to Blink-182, blinks first album didn't go anywhere either, but you cant tell me they aren't one of the most influential bands of the modern age. Sure Nickelback could write radio hits, but I would debate slipknot had a more dedicated fanbase(were literally willing and happy to be called maggots....fight me) I'm just saying I wouldn't downplay Slipknot as just "making noise" that's both uninformed and disingenuous.
@@user-vy1md9mi8q I have no idea how you perceive things, but the truth is: First, Corey Taylor alone would not have gotten where he is now, most of the success Slipknot or Stone Sour have can be more attributed to the rest of the band than to him alone, of course he is the soul of his own bands because he is the singer and sings well, but very few times has he been the main writer of the songs he sings, only two of his own songs have become moderately massive hits, like "Snuff" or "Through Glass" additionally, Slipknot is a niche band that increased their video views with the hype of the internet; otherwise, they would be less relevant today. On the other hand, Chad Kroeger has been the author of almost all of Nickelback's songs, even though they may be easy to play on guitar or have crappy lyrics, when compared to Slipknot or Stone Sour, they are much catchier and have more groove, otherwise, no one would say Nickelback is a guilty pleasure, this is why, and because Corey had been mocking him for almost the same reasons people hate Nickelback, Chad told him to try writing a hit, besides, when he said Nickelback was diverse and he couldn't think of another band like them, I completely agree, because Can you name another band that has done metal to pop in less than a second?, there was an extremely ridiculous comment mentioning Avenged Sevenfold as diverse, but the person who wrote it admitted they only write metal, now, I could say that Bring Me The Horizon is diverse, which is true, but it's not a band that comes to mind immediately if you're someone who listens to everything, on the other hand, the internet also helped Nickelback, but they already had everything before that happened, in contrast, I repeat, without the internet, no one would pay attention to Slipknot because most of the success of their music and hits is based on an overhype created thanks to RUclips videos, otherwise, they would be on the same level as Stone Sour. And to conclude, tell me, Who listens to music based on its complexity?, ask anyone, and they will tell you it's completely ridiculous, people listen to music because it's good, period, if Nickelback didn't have absurdly bad lyrics, many more people would agree with me, I have the lucky advantage of not being a native english speaker, so I don't care much about the lyrics, I can understand why people wouldn't listen to Nickelback, but it's not like people are very concerned about lyrics, at least I believe that the goodness of a song comes more from the melody than the lyrics, that's all I can say.

@@ElThunder Nah. Slipknot isn’t famous and hyped just because of the internet, they are famous for Corey and the guys being able to write many hit songs. If anything, Nickelback are the ones that are more famous because of the internet because of the constant memes and jokes. Also, there are countless bands more diverse than Nickelback (e.g Metallica, Megadeth, Linkin Park (dont even like their music), Avenged Sevenfold, Foo Fighters, Queen, Coldplay, Imagine Dragons etc.) and if you listen to a handful of Nickelback songs you will hear plenty of things in common whether its their ballads or hard rock songs, they have things in common such as lyrical themes or structures. Nickelback have made a couple different tracks, so they arent as formulaic as one or two other bands out there (cough cough acdc) but they’re still pretty repetitive. I agree Nickelback has good melodies but some lyrics are godawful that they almost ruin the song (figured you out for example). So overall I think you’re the one perceiving this from a biased perspective, not me.

This dude talked about how great he and his band are the whole fucking time and completely trashed Corey and his band because of this other guys opinion. Regardless of IF Corey talked shit before which I highly doubt was as direct as kroger makes it seem, the best musicians rise above it and know they're too good to acknowledge any hater. People who have long careers in the music industry make it happen because of the way they carry themselves. Sure everyone might have some sort of narcissistic tendencies but they are mostly always humble and down to Earth (few exceptions like Kanye, but he is 100x more talented than chadd kroger). Guys like this nickelback singer fall off because they show their true colors of how cocky and big headed they are. They make a few top 10 singles and think they are legends. Legends are more than their singles, albums and music. They influence mass amounts of people with there individuality, uniqueness and persona.

Kroegers' a joke. Nickelback *objectively* writes less complex and easier to write "chant" style songs with literally 3 topics, teenage levels of drinking or pot, "partying", or "sex". All of which are so white washed and boring to actually listen to at this point.

By the time Stone Sour debuted their very first album, Nickelback had already published 3, and were already at the top of the bill as one of the biggest rock bands of that era. So Chad is somewhat true when he says that Stone Sour tried to "imitate" what Nickelback did. And not only this. It is highly likely that, had Nickelback not gone successful, NOW WE STILL WOULD NOT HAVE STONE SOUR. Because Stone Sour became famous and were signed to Roadrunner ONLY thanks to what Nickelback did for the industry with their Silver Side Up, an album that propelled alternative rock to the top of the sales and made record companies interested in similar bands. Show me ONE Nickelback song that's got blasts beats in it, proper double bass, ACTUAL growls, ACTUAL guitar solos that not just anyone whose played for six months can play. Nickelback is NOT diverse. Stone sour is. The difference between songs like Bother, RU486 and Come Whatever May is monumental. THAT is diversity, and it sounds NOTHING like Nickelback. claim 2, Corey hasn't written a hit song. This one is irrefutably false. Slipknot has TWO albums that went nr 1 in Billboard 200, and Stone Sour has two songs that were in the top 50. Aka, hit songs. And yes, writing hit songs IS easy, which is why most songs that top the charts in the first place are utter garbage. It's not an impressive artistic feat if you come at it form the point of view of trying to write a hit song. it's a very simple formula. When you write songs that actually have genuine creative layers on the other hand, making it to the charts IS very impressive. All the other claims were just embarrassing and inaccurate interpretations of Slipknot and their so-called "gimmick", not to mention the fact that Stone Sour not only formed before Slipknot, they formed before Nickelback did as well. Chat is full of shit, and Nickelback is the sonic equivalent of hot garbage.

wow, LP is probably the best example. Their diversity is unusual and at the end they're being hated for it sometimes. Chad should really open his eyes and ears, if he thinks Nickelback is diverse. BMTH and LP are such amazing examples, Linkin Park went from nu metal, hard rock, to pop, while bring me the horizon went from deathcore, to metalcore, and with a hint of electronics in their songs. I've never listened to opeth but I'll check them out
