I think stating "you won't get into medical school with an MCAT score of 500" is quite discouraging and inaccurate. Students who demonstrate excellent research activities, clinical experience and high GPA do get accepted with lower MCAT scores. Its accurate to say most who matriculate have high scores but remember the MCAT is just one requirement not the ONLY requirement to get you accepted 😉

I’m going into premed in the summer and have around 8 months until school. I have only highshool sciences and I plan to study for the MCAT for these next 8 months while working, and finish it before University, doing so will also give me a step ahead of students in my regular premed classes, as I would have already spent a lot of time converting subjects that will be taught. What do you think about this plan? Is there anything you would particularly recommend implementing ? Currently I am doing Anki, online lectures on Lecturio which is extremely effective and I’d recommend everyone to use it. Also got the Kaplan books. After I’ve gone through all that material, (roughly 3 months from now) I will start doing exam questions and more Anki

I think you can do it successfully in all honesty. But be warned, most US and Canadian medical schools will not accept an MCAT that is over 2 or 3 years old. So if you take it before your freshmen year, your score will likely be "expired" by the time you apply to school and I would hate that for you!

@@InformingFutureDoctors thank you for the reply! I’m in Canada, and I read that it’s 5 years till it “expires” . I’m doing accelerated university to finish in roughly 2.5 -> 3 years. And I’ll apply after second year.

what practice tests do you recommend taking besides the ones provided by the AAMC? Are there any free ones?

a lot of companies will offer a free practice exam on their website! Altius has our favorite FLEs but you can also try Blueprint, Kaplan, Princeton Review, etc.

I plan on taking the mcat around september next year. I got 496 on diagnostic. I got tired at the end and started guessing. Do you have recommendations for building stamina? 7 hours is so long🫠.
Also: I read through the chapters, but when I get to the questions, I'm still confused and feel like I wasted time even reading the passage.🫠

Honestly, stamina isn't a big issue on the real test. You're so amped up on test day it doesn't really impact you ha. But I always suggest studying in 2 hour blocks to build stamina.
