- This video explains how to properly engage 4High, 4Low, and the rear diff locker on a first gen Tacoma. This truck is a 1998. There are some newer first gen Tacoma's that are a little bit different than this that actually have a 4WD button on the shifter itself. Hope it helps you guys out!
Super helpful, thanks! Scared the crap out of myself thinking that I had the differentials locked on accident, now I know that I didn’t!
Glad I could help!
These old 4runners are still better than most of the stuff on the market today.
Hey Thanks! This video explained exactly what I need to do and what I was doing wrong. Perfect !
I got the exact same truck. Had it for 10 years.
I love how its an automatic with a tach but my 95 5spd doesnt have one.
My base single cab has air conditioning and a tape deck but no clock
@@EulogizingSleep my old ass jeep doesnt have a tach, or clock. Dont complain 😂
My 95 5 speed taco does
Curious as to whether you are supposed to keep the 4x4 shifter in neutral or high when driving regular everyday driving.
The Truck won’t go anywhere if you have the 4x4 shifter in neutral.
Keep it in 2h for regular daily driving
@@kagenlogan544are you suppose to lock your hubs if there Manuel ?
@@FOURFTP Only lock the hubs when you are in four wheel drive.
I have a 99 Tacoma and I pressed the e locker switch, and it glows but the light in the dash doesn’t come on.
Out of 4l can be done on the fly with a j shift t case. Make sure to be In neutral. MT makes this much easier because you will have to find a new gear anyways.
That's why it's important to read the card on the visor. Since mine is an automatic transmission, it states on the card specifically for automatics to "Stop the vehicle, then shift into neutral first." when going in and out of 4lo. For the manual trans is says "stop the vehicle, or keep the vehicle speed below 5mph" Might as well stop at that point. lol So with automatics, you have to be stopped.
broodmare25 you are correct with reading the card. It is the best way to ensure a proper shift as per Toyota. Auto your only option is to stop, shift, and continue on in or out of 4L. The MT is a completely different story. This is in reference to j shift transfer case with MT. Out is possible at any speed as long as you do the order correct. Out of 4l... 1. Let off the dang throttle 2. Put clutch in find neutral on transmission. (Recommended out of 3rd gear in 4l) 3. Find neutral on t-case then shift to 4h gently. (I have never found a situation that it will grind results may vary... it is your truck so be warned!) 4. Find 2h on tcase can be done by simply shifting tcase lever off throttle 5. Find new transmission gear close to ground speed. (If coming out of 4l 3rd, 1st 2h is slightly shorter and 2nd 2h is taller. 1st requires you to slow significantly and rev match to open the gate on the fly. 2nd requires a very quick and smooth operation between step 1-5 to allow you to continue without lugging the engine.
If you are not familiar with the operation of the Toyota chain driven tcase I wouldn't recommend trying to shift on the fly. Also into 4l is almost impossible while moving and is a poor decision unless you want to start rebuilding your t-case.
Side note. Clutchless out ;) good luck.
Awesome video, thank you for sharing!
Very helpful, thank you!
How do I disengage 4x4 04 Tacoma
I got the same truck 00 Toyota Tacoma but mine is not equipped with diferencial lock but I got 4x4 auto
Thanks so much I pushed you a lot. Take care
Hi I just bought this vehicle and I can’t seem to engage the locker.. I rolled forward a little and turned the wheel..no dice 🤨.. what am I doing wrong ?
if ur a first time 4x4 owner, remember u might have to lock ur front hubs.
Dumb question... but when would you apply 4hi vs 4low
4 low would but ultra slow speed situations where you need the max amount of traction. 4 hi can be driven around town at normal speeds
It was pretty clear your explanation on how to shift into each of 4 wheeling, you just forgotto explain what is the purpose of each position!
René Montoya That could be a whole video on its own! I’ll try and do that sometime too.
Okay I have a 1995 Tacoma 4wd and I don’t have the rr diff lock feature or button but my dash does have the light and even turns on for a quick second when I turn on the car. Why does my dash have the light if I don’t have the feature or does it have that feature??
omgcheeter That’s odd. Generally the lockers didn’t come about until 98. I’ve heard some say they’ve seen some with lockers previously but I’m not sure how true it is as I’ve personally never seen one. But it may just be how they all have a similar dash from the factory (rather than changing dashes for each feature) which is causing you to see it on startup. Or someone swapped yours out or something. Not completely sure haha
broodmare25 yeah I’m thinking someone might have swapped the dash out before it that’s how they probably came factory with those lights. Mine is also the base 4wd trim
broodmare25 I own a 1997 Tacoma with a locker, its production date was December 1996
I wish mine had this feature :*(
I loved my 98 it’s a standard tho hehe
So nice to have a woman do one of these!!! I thought it was me that was the problem. The truck is about 20 years old and grinds when I try to take out of Low 4. Neutral, foot on brake, pull straight back and it grinds. Any suggestions anyone? Thanks!
That’s normal 02 taco here
Very helpful. Thanks.
Thank you
Thanks for sharing... just got my 98 tacoma... does the locker work in 2hi and 4hi? Mine seems to only work in 4lo
Alphabreed2121 For truck’s like yours with 4WD, the locker will only work in 4Lo. There is a mod you can do called the grey wire mod which will allow you to turn it on anytime.
@@broodmare25 Grey wire mod completed today!!! it was very easy to do.
Alphabreed2121 Well that was good timing! Lol
@@broodmare25 thanks soo much... your video was great and it took me down the rabbit hole where I found out about the grey wire mod... thank you for that... gonna test out the locker this weekend by running paddles in Glamis
So you don't have to back up one and a half car lengths to unlock the system?
Not normally, no.
The green 4WD light on the cluster won't turn off when I put it back in H2 from H4 and L4. How do I get the 4WD to disengage so the light turns off in H2? 2004 Tacoma 4x4 5spd single cab.
I’m looking for the same answer
@Miki-mg7df Make sure you put the shifter in 2wd. All you do is put the car in reverse and back it up a little. It will pop back into 2wd and the light will go off.
My 2001 has a 4wd button on the side of the shifter what’s it for?
four wheel drive
MVP
Thanks for sharing this video
LSanti Glad you liked it!
If I want to drive in the snow can I just press the 4wd button on the side and leave it on 4 high. Do I still need to engage the rr lock button? I have the 02 double cab tacoma. Automatic 3.4 engine.
The RR lock will only work in 4low. The locker isn’t something you want to use in the snow anyway. You want the wheels to slip, otherwise it kicks out pretty easily.
I have a 2002 toyota tacoma 4x4, so does that mean that putting it into 4wd works the same one as yours ?
The process should be the same. The only difference is you may have that electric button on the shifter itself.
Thanks for the tutorialb
I'm so surprised that they kept the transfer case the same for at least 30 years I wish it was still in the new Tacos, I have a 98 5 sp but mine doesn't have an e-locker it has the spot for it on the dash though.
Spider Money54 my 98 3.4L auto has it and it makes a pretty big difference while off roading
Only TRD models have e-locker
No locking hubs on the wheels?
Nope, mine does not have the manual hubs. There are some out there that do have them though.
@@broodmare25 I was wondering bc I had a 99 Tacoma and it was a stick shift with the manual locking hubs. I recently bought a 2001 Tacoma and it doesn’t have the hubs in the wheels. I was a little confused.
@@deansoclean3582 Yeah they were a bit more common on the older first gen Tacoma’s. We had a 96 that had them but neither of my two 98’s do.
i have a similar tacoma. but mines manual transmission. mine does not have a rr locker button
Only the TRD off road package has it.
My 01 Tacoma grinds going into 4Lo and back into 4hi. Yes I’m in neutral and completely stopped when doing this. I’ve already changed transfer case fluids and filled per spec... my dad said as long as I’m not moving and I’m in neutral it won’t hurt anything and that is normal. True or false??
Jeremy Tablang you need to pull the shifter really fast for it to not grind
That was good
What about ect power?
The ECT button changes the shift points and allows you to hit higher RPM levels before shifting into the next gear.
It also makes your tranny kick down with ease! If you're going balls out, the tranny will get very busy for you if need be or, if you're hauling/towing weight, like you said - it raises your shift points relatively accordingly. Ive had a 99 4× limited trd white & I've managed to only clock 176k on the tiker. I like my ride but, it hasn't been free of issues like older examples in the early (factory) 4x4 days - these newer wheelers will cost you here & there with vulnerabilitys the early machines don't have. I know that being stuck in 4x & locking the diff in is off the hook frikin cool!
What is the push button 4x4 on the side of the gear selector?
the truck can't shift into overdrive (think interstate speeds) with the button pushed in...
Somtimes i guess the time depending where the sun is. Issue then is i have no compass. Night your sol
Whats the other power ECT button?
Cody Shanks It changes the shift points and allows you to reach higher RPMs before shifting. Helps climbing steep grades among other things.
Does anybody have a owner's manual for a 2002 Toyota tacoma pree runner? I will buy it
Ebay
@@rawkus2013 thank you Mario I appreciate it

IMO you should have done your demo with the OEM knob - too confusing for viewers to deal with you holding it and referring to it throughout your video. Lame
