Thank you for this very clean, easy demonstration on how to replace the hdmi port. You explained each step clearly and hassle free. There are thousands of videos available on how to do this but yours is by far, one of the best examples. For anyone watching, please be sure to use a good quality flux and solder which will give you a solid, clean and reliable result.
Hi. I watched this video 3 times before attempting to change the HDMI port in my nephew's Xbox. I just wanted to say, thank you, and I think I invented an even easier version of your method. I got the old port off and then I could not for the life of me get any of the old solder out of the leg holes. I didn't have your fancy desoldering gun but I did have the plastic one and it didn't do a darn thing. So this is what I did instead. With the board facing up, I put a drop of leaded solder onto each of the 4 leg points, then I pointed my heat gun at the area until I saw them start to melt(a few seconds) then I carefully pushed the new port into place with my other hand(and tweasers). I made sure the pins all looked aligned and Then I turned off the heat gun. That's it. The old solder hardened almost instantly and it all looks just as good as new. No mess. Painless. Took half the time as your method. But thank you for the guidance! I couldn't have done it without this video. I tested the Xbox after and it works like new. I'm so proud!
Excellent, and nice method.. just be really careful to not put too much pressure on the pads when inserting the replacement port when doing this - as the pads are warm (from the melted solder) it might damage them
man after buying un leaded solder, a soldering iron, heatgun, copper braid, copper flux (didnt do my research very well), and then buying proper flux later, waiting for half the stuff to come in the mail. I find your video. I managed to get off the broken port and almost got the new port back in but I didnt remove any of the old solder (from watching other videos i tried just the heatgun method with no success) Im going to give it another attempt tomorrow with this great info
@TweakTips I've been soldering all sorts of electronics for over forty years, including modern stuff, but still picked up a few tips. Thank you for this! It's an excellent primer as well as a guide to the Xbox in particular which I don't work on very much. I really appreciate you letting us know which solder station settings you use, most videos just seem to assume that.
Excellent job, the only addition to the method shown would be to use IPA in between using the irons and gun. This cleans the excess flux (as most are rosin based) to keep the area clean. Since there is small components near the pad areas and using a heat gun; kapton tape is inexpensive and a huge repair tool when soldering surface mount areas. You remind me of manufacturing techniques on repair stations. GREAT JOB!
Father of 4 here, followed each step, first bought a decent soldering gun, then a heat gun and followed all the steps to the point I need a de-soldering gun. I don't care about the price, I just want a good one to finish this job. Please point me in the right direction...Many thanks from Boston.
Hi Chase - thanks for the comment, and great to hear you are giving the repair a try yourself. Here is a link to the desoldering gun I have used personally myself and it has powerful suction, what is nice about this model is the pump is separate from the gun which means it can be larger and in turn more powerful - amzn.to/3nVQKwV If you prefer a cheaper option, you can just try to use desoldering wick and a manual desolder pump - amzn.to/37bWjBB with this you will be able to place the copper wick over the pads and heat with your soldering iron and it will remove most of the solder (without the need for the desoldering gun). Key for the desolder wick is to use lots of flux so the solder is pulled onto the wick. Hope that helps.
Thank you so much! This helped, I had a donor Xbox one board and practiced on it and removed and reinstalled the hdmi port on it, only problem I’m having is I only have the desolder pump and not the gun you have so it took me like 40 minutes trying to remove the solder on the holes where the port goes in, I got 3 of them out easily with the pump but the last one just wouldn’t come out so I had to try a different solution. I’m trying to buy an Xbox One S with a broken HDMI port and see if I can fix following this guide again, this amazing video just got you another sub!! 😄
@@TweakTips 15:33 I’ll never understand how this is done without bridging, I just tried it on the Xbox I said I was gonna get and ahhh it’s so difficult man, like I did everything and just had to solder it down but the tiny tip doesn’t do much and the bigger tips cause a bridge and ugh :/
@@johny1220 It is tricky for sure - my top tip is a thin soldering iron tip, on a soldering iron which is at least 100w. Typically the thinner the tip, the less heat it holds, so it is better to have a higher wattage soldering iron when using a thin tip. Also, always add lots of flux when using a thicker tip and this will help to stop the bridges
Actually, while this method obviously worked, it made it harder than it has to be. I suggest buying some solder wick. It’s a copper braid with flux built in. Start from the back side (opposite side of the port) lay the wick across the solder points and heat it with the iron, the heat will pull the solder into the wick and allow the ports legs to be pulled out from the other side. Solder wick is a solderer best friend. Do not over heat the printed circuit board as it can damage other components as well as weaken the board. Good luck!
Hello bro I’m trying to fix the htmi port but the things you said we need are not available to me what can I use instead .what are the thing I need that not that expensive.Thank you
It is actually really easy! After you get the old port off, as shown in this video, don't even worry about removing all the old solder, it seemed impossible for me, so I just put a drop of leaded solder onto each mount point, let it cool, heat up the area with the heat gun for a few seconds until you see the solder melt again, then with your tweasers holding the new port in your other hand, gently lower it down into it's position and press into place carefully, making sure the pins are aligned and it looks fairly level in comparison to the port next to it. Hold it in place and turn off the heat gun and you're literally done. No cleaning up or trying to suck up messy solder. No fancy equipment or desoldering mechanism needed. You can do it!
Thank you for the video. I do have one question though. What temp should my soldering iron hit in order to loosen the solder on the legs of the hdmi port?
I did everything in the video and my Xbox worked but for some reason my screen stop displaying out of nowhere while my xbox was updating do you know what could be wrong?
I plan on attempting this...starting to tinker more and more. Do the small pins already have solder on the new HDMI port? Or do I need to introduce a small amount of solder with a fine tip? I feel like yours stuck so easily to the motherboard pads 🤣
Hi - Great to hear you are tinkering.. that's how I got started as few year back. It is best to add a little solder to the legs of the new HDMI port before installing - this will always help. Just try not to add too much so you do not get any solder bridges.
Thank you, and thanks for the question. Usually, no video output is one of two things.. either the HDMI port or the Retimer chip is faulty. I have a video here on how to replace the retimer chip - ruclips.net/video/W_hJsG-IGUw/видео.html

It certainly can be tricky.. I struggle sometimes too. I have found that, as long as you have the board on a flat surface, press the iron with more pressure on the wick (without moving it!!) can help draw up the solder to the wick... just do NOT move the soldering iron if you are putting more pressure on the wick.

So I thought you cleaned all the solder off the board before you started. I seen you heat each leg up but not actually add any soldier to them. Did I miss you add soldier to them before you seated it to the board

Hi Nico - depends on how much of the pin is missing. If it a small amount you might be able to bridge and resolder the pin, if not you will need to replace the HDMI port
Great video. All the other ones i saw were an hour or more lol. What all do i need to do this replacement other than the hdmi replacement port and soldering iron + solder?
I tried doing this I couldn’t melt the solder I’m using a 60 wat harbor freight iron and some soder and a heat gun, what type of solder should I use and is 60 watt enough thanks
I’ve never done this before and I’m trying to fix my old Xbox’s hdmi port and I don’t have any of the tool. Where can I get tools for this and also any tips to help me?
Unfortunately I think I ruined my board during the heat gun part. Part of the pad came off with the broken hdmi socket because it was taking 30+ minutes and I guess I got impatient so I started tugging down *lightly* to get the socket to move. Well, that worked, but upon flipping the board over I see the pad is half missing. What a bummer... that heat gun part is gruelingly slow and I can't help but feel like this tutorial is meant for those who have high quality equipment -- the rig I've got is a sort of "entry level" set and just doesn't seem to generate the heat required for quick soldering and heat gun use. Damn...! Freaking bummer right now
ok how long did it take you with the heat gun. I seem to be making no progress whatsoever. I was heating for about 20 minutes at 515C because my heating gun is a bit weak. But literally nothing is happening, nothing is getting loose.
Unfortunate that I took apart my whole xbox just to find out I wont be able to fix the hdmi port. Would it be possible for you to put up a list of all the materials/tools that were used to do this.
Hi Ogtay - You will need a few tools using this method. A heat gun/soldering iron station (amzn.to/3ebA8f1) and de-soldering gun (amzn.to/3bU2Tvb) as well as solder (amzn.to/2ywsBIG) and flux (amzn.to/3ebb5IV)
Sure... you will need: New HDMI Port (Xbox S) - amzn.to/3r4sydx Hot Air Station (Mid Range) - amzn.to/37q4tpK Soldering Iron (Mid Range) - amzn.to/3p1sZ6x Or a combination Solder Rework Station (Mid Range) - amzn.to/37pU514 Soldering Wick (Instead of using de-soldering gun) - amzn.to/3ntxDtr Solder - amzn.to/34mTKKL And finally, Soldering Flux - amzn.to/3ampC62

After you get the old port off, as shown in this video, DO NOT even worry about removing all the old solder, it seemed impossible for me too, so I just put a drop of leaded solder onto each mount point, let it cool, heat up the area with the heat gun for a few seconds until you see the solder melt again, then with your tweasers holding the new port in your other hand, gently lower it down into it's position and press into place carefully, making sure the pins are aligned and it looks fairly level in comparison to the port next to it. Hold it in place and turn off the heat gun and you're literally done. No cleaning up or trying to suck up messy solder. No fancy equipment or desoldering mechanism needed. You can do it!
So I thought you cleaned all the solder off the board before you started. I seen you heat each leg up but not actually add any soldier to them. Did I miss you add soldier to them before you seated it to the board
Yes, make sure you tin the pads with solder before you attach the new port - makes life easier when you solder the pins
Where can I buy the alternative hdmi port?
Hi - Amazon stock them - amzn.to/3w7zyJe
@@TweakTips Also, who should I contact for doing this, since I'm not a professional? (In India, there are no Xbox service centres, so I wanted to know which profession can do this)
So I don't have a soldering iron, heat gun, desoldering iron, flux, or leaded/unleaded solder....
How much would this cost to do if I didn't have a soldering iron
Out of curiosity, do you have a preferred brand of isopropyl alchohol?
To be honest, most brands are the same as it is a standard product. Look for something which is 99% or above

Them pins on the motherboard, my Xbox had some kind of faulty that it would just black out the screen and reappear randomly. I opened the Xbox and one of the pins was damaged like half of a pin was gone for some reason. U know how to fix it mate?
Hi Nico - depends on how much of the pin is missing. If it a small amount you might be able to bridge and resolder the pin, if not you will need to replace the HDMI port
How do you keep the tiny pegs from touching each other
It is best to use a microscope to solder the legs
Bruh this really helped my brother broke the input
same
i was the brother who broke mine🤣
Great video. All the other ones i saw were an hour or more lol. What all do i need to do this replacement other than the hdmi replacement port and soldering iron + solder?
Hi Yoinkez - you will need a hot air station too
Awesome thanks! :)
Will anything hot work work? Like a hot hairdryer?
@@Fandomsaddict definitely not. You need a hotter temp then a hair dryer can do
@@5k122Y what about a heat gun?
I tried doing this I couldn’t melt the solder I’m using a 60 wat harbor freight iron and some soder and a heat gun, what type of solder should I use and is 60 watt enough thanks
Nice video! But do you know where I could pay someone to do this for me?
Hi - Thank you very much. If you are based in the UK, check out consoletherapy.com/
You can get somone to do it on the app thumbtack
is it possible to just push the hdmi piece out with just the desoldering gun?
And like put something between the piece and the place and just let it fall out as you desolder it?
can you do this without the unleaded solder
Yes it you warm up the port enough - you will still need the solder to install the new port
Is there any alternate ways to do it without the heat or soldering gun because I can't afford those items they are way too expensive at the moment
Can you take the hdmi off without a heat gun?
Unfortunately not as the all the pins need to be heated at the same time to remove it
I did it on mine and I get picture but it's cuts out then cuts back in. It does this consistently. Is this because it's bridged somewhere?
But what should you buy to replace the port?
What can i do about if a pad i missing from the hdmi port
You will need to use jumper wire to reconnect the pins of the HDMI port to the correct place on the motherboard
@@TweakTips the pin was missing when i open the system up
I’ve never done this before and I’m trying to fix my old Xbox’s hdmi port and I don’t have any of the tool.
Damn...! Freaking bummer right now
can i do this without a heat gun? like just heat each one up with the iron instead?
Unfortunately not as the soldering iron alone will not head the pads up enough
@@TweakTips thanks off to buy a heat gun! haha
Can you use petroleum jelly instead of flux?
No - it is not the same consistency or have the same properties
ok how long did it take you with the heat gun. I seem to be making no progress whatsoever. I was heating for about 20 minutes at 515C because my heating gun is a bit weak. But literally nothing is happening, nothing is getting loose.
Hi Captain.. It can take a while. Make sure you use plenty of flux and you have your air flow quite high
I accidentally lifted some of the pads, what should I do now?
Unfortunately you will need some jumper wire to reconnect them, and a microscope
Could you as a temporary fix (until I get a replacement HDMI port) could I take the HDMI in port and put it in the HDMI out port?
You certainly can yes
Unfortunate that I took apart my whole xbox just to find out I wont be able to fix the hdmi port. Would it be possible for you to put up a list of all the materials/tools that were used to do this.
Hi Ogtay - You will need a few tools using this method. A heat gun/soldering iron station (amzn.to/3ebA8f1) and de-soldering gun (amzn.to/3bU2Tvb) as well as solder (amzn.to/2ywsBIG) and flux (amzn.to/3ebb5IV)
booBeam Tech thank you
Will i need to have flux or can i do it w/o the flux
@@eltonsayani2494 You will need the flux as this help melt the solder, and creates a strong bond for the port.
Do i need a heat gun or can i use a soldering iron
i dont have any of that equipment though is there another way to do it beside using heating and flux and etc?
I don’t have any tools to melt it or anything what do I do
Get yoo ass to work
Can you list everything i need for my process?
Sure... you will need:
New HDMI Port (Xbox S) - amzn.to/3r4sydx
Hot Air Station (Mid Range) - amzn.to/37q4tpK
Soldering Iron (Mid Range) - amzn.to/3p1sZ6x
Or a combination Solder Rework Station (Mid Range) - amzn.to/37pU514
Soldering Wick (Instead of using de-soldering gun) - amzn.to/3ntxDtr
Solder - amzn.to/34mTKKL
And finally, Soldering Flux - amzn.to/3ampC62
Hi I have a Xbox one s so my Xbox one I closed and then I opened after maybe from 1 to 2 hours it has problem with HDMI port and in screen like it was broken screen like green red like broken phone so I went to the shop to fix but it’s still the same problem and also when I open the Xbox display was 640p I want 1080p before when Xbox is good 1080p all good so can you help me please with this problem
Hi do I need the tools you use in this video including the things that you put on the hdmi port
Is that a micro soldering pencil or standard iron you're using?
Can I switch out the HDMI piece next to it with the one that is broken
What's the preferred size solder wick?
Is it safe to replace the hdmi port without removing the fan and not having the cleaning alcohol
Although technically you might be ok to do so, I personally would always remove the fan as the console does get hot when removing - and accidents happen.
Where did you get your HDMI from?
I have a supplier in China, but they are available on Amazon here - amzn.to/319SvwQ
Will a hair dryer work instead of a heat gun jw have everything else but the heat gun
Wondering what I'm doing wrong. No matter how long I heat it with the gun, the port wont budge. How long should it take?
Make sure you have added unleaded solder first of all and use lots of flux.. should take 3 or 4 minutes at 480 degrees.
Didn't work for me it will turn on but does not show the screen
Hi Amanda - it might be your HDMI retimer IC that is faulty
Is there any way to do this without heat or a flux
Unfortunately not, no
@@TweakTips oh
@@TweakTips rip my Xbox took it apart and did everything just to not have the right stuff
