  • Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party is getting ready to assume a historic third term in power.
    William Lai of the independence-leaning DPP, is set to be sworn in as the island's next president on May 20th.
    At the same time lawmakers from his party are ramping up a campaign to remove the statues of former leader Chiang Kai-shek.
    They see these as "symbols of authoritarianism" - linked to Beijing-friendly opposition KMT.
    CNA's East Asia Tonight examines the controversy and what does it mean for cross-Strait relations.

Even if we ignore the people's right per the United Nations principle of self-determination, the return of "stolen property" should have only included 1/3 of Taiwan and not the whole island. Taiwan also did have a very brief period as an independent state right after the Qing Dynasty had given away Taiwan to Japan with the Shimonoseki Treaty. It was called the Republic of Formosa (臺灣民主國) founded on May 23, 1895 and lasted 151 days until October 21 of that year.

      @@michaelyuan3382 Argue much? Qing China exercised full sovereignty over the whole of Taiwan with indigenous peoples administering their areas much like the Miao and other non Han subject of Imperial China. This self administered areas were expect to pay taxes often in local products and were even marshaled for imperial wars see the Ming dispatching Miao troops to Korea during the Imjin War in the 16th century.

    • @michaelyuan3382
      @michaelyuan3382 10 дней назад

      @@deanzaZZR First, The Qing government in Tainan had to send troops to war on the Paiwan tribe during the Rover Incident of 1867, making it pretty clear that the aborigine tribes in the south of Taiwan were not under their control. The American Consul to Amoy, Charles Le Gendre, in the Rover Incident subsequently commented: "we see the rights of the Emperor of China over aboriginal Formosa, such as we have said, are not absolute, as long as she remains uncivilized . . . " That comment makes it clear, even if the Qing Dynasty claimed control over the whole of Taiwan, the reality was different. Do you have to pay rent and taxes to me, just because I say so? Given their isolationist mentality, the Qing Dynasty just was never really interested in obtaining the whole of Taiwan. Austronesian aborigines on the western plains were assimilated and intermarried with the Han settlers, but the mountains and the whole of the eastern parts of Taiwan remained pretty much under the control of unassimilated, unconquered native tribes during the Qing Dynasty. That's why there was a classification distinction by the Qing Dynasty between 熟蕃 and 生蕃: civilized and uncivilized (literally, cooked and uncooked), i.e., conquered and unconquered savages. Japan also occupied a part of Taiwan during the Mudan Incident in 1871, breaking the continuity and fragmenting the territory of control by the Qing Dynasty.
      Second, you got it completely backwards. Back then, it was the Han, mostly Hokkien and Hakka (and not Miao) Chinese settlers paying rent to the aborigine overlords, not the other way around.
      Third, the Miao were not Taiwanese natives. They lived in Hainan and the mountain regions of southern mainland China. Please do not confuse Taiwan with mainland China and Hainan. They are distinct geographical concepts. And I cannot find any mention of the Ming Dynasty sending any troops at all from Taiwan for the Imjin Wars. Please provide your source for the claim. Even if Ming Dynasty sent Miao troops to Korea from China, it doesn't prove that they also sent natives from other parts of the world they did not control. Are you going to argue that the Ming Dynasty also sent American Indians to fight in the Imjin Wars?
      The bottom line is that neither the Ming Dynasty nor the Qing Dynasty nor any other non-native power had absolute, unbroken, unfragmented control over the whole of Taiwan prior to the Imperial Japan period. It was Japan that brought unified control over the whole island of Taiwan under one authority after the Shimonoseki Treaty in 1895, followed by the KMT dictatorship in 1945 subsequently. Every other colonial power had only partial control. That's why it is so odious to the Taiwanese to hear communist China's claim on Taiwan based on the Ming or Qing Dynasty history. Neither was communist China, and one of them was not even Chinese, but Manchurian. Frankly, the Dutch and the Spanish have better claims to Taiwan based on history than the current communist Chinese regime. And finally, back to the KMT that started this series of arguments in the first place: yes, they are foreign colonizers of Taiwan, because they chose to massacre, torture, and oppress the Taiwanese people for decades as subhumans, not even as foreigners. That's really all that needs to be said, although I could mention universal principles such as self-determination or repeat all the historical facts that show that the whole of Taiwan has never been part of any "China," never mind communist China, and not even the Republic of China before Taiwan was invaded and occupied by the KMT in 1945 (the original ROC Constitution does not even include Taiwan), etc. But you believe what you want if you are already brainwashed by KMT and communist propaganda. Just know that the Taiwanese will not hand over our homes and lives so willingly. More than 98 or 99% according to the last poll do not want Taiwan to become a second Hong Kong. We will fight for our freedom and independence. We won't let the Chinese colonize us again.
