The only reason Seymour is introducing the treaty principles Bill is because those who hold power and wealth don't like a judicial review finding that there is redress required and that redress will tip the scales even if slightly against their favour. Using English names for all government departments makes sense. We have many ethnicities in this country around 3 to 4% of people speak Maori It’s an international language. It makes sense to use English. It should never have been changed in the first place and the fact why it was changed without asking English-speaking people so it’s kind of like a reverse thing isn’t it?
Maybe the number of government departments with prominent Maori names should be proportional to the number of Maori in the population. That way we have some Maori names but the majority are still English so most people should be happy?

So under section 2 of the treaty of waitangi, 28 legislation the Act and NZ first want to be able to use to make money but they cant because its stuck by law under the treaty. Some of the legislations like the conservation and protection of natural native plants, organisms etc land ,waterways are what they intend to free up for mining e.g waikoropupu springs in the south,which means arsenic will pollute it due to mining and so will the caving systems that are massive down there. This will poison underground water ways wells, impact on farming and the communities there . The majority of the money will not do anything for our economy and all resources taken with be sold and N.Z gets a small percent, the miners will most likely already be trained and be flown in. Same with gas, the hauraki gulf they aant open for fishing ,commercial shipping. Maori they want to vuy at the cheapest cost possible to also do all that. The government refuses to buy Maori owned land for full price which forces the greedy to change it to crown and sell possibly. But it also mean department of conservation has no say, although that was the old way of taking land by say 'th8s wet land on your property has threatened species so you cant use it and we will take carebof that." So it makes sense to use the language that most can handle, and I note that you yourself used English because you KNOW that your message won't get through to most if you used anything else, DESPITE there being Google Translate. Why make it difficult for everyone? Use the most prevalent language! That's NOT to say that people can't (if they wish) learn maori/te reo, but I declare right here and now that English gets me through all over the world, no matter where I visit, and I'm not about to learn maori myself at my age. I can speak more than one language, but I'm not adding another to the mix just to keep activists happy, because even if I were to do so, THAT wouldn't be the end of it, would it? There would be no respect for having done so because I still wouldn't know other things about maoridom. Such as (but not limited to) the protocol at a marae. But I can understand a tiny amount of Maori and can understand Spanish and can speak a little. But why wouldn't I use my first first language and speak English in New Zealand, but equally English doesn't need protection. In Spain, they speak Castilian predominantly, but they protect the Basques and Catalan languages. In the UK, they protect Welsh and Gaelic . Or do you think only white indigenous languages are worth protection and any languages spoken by people who have too much melanin in their skin isn't worthy of having their languages protected.

FORCING others to de-facto learn a minority language because the English has been diverted in a sentence or phrase is ludicrous. Necessitating having to look up and translate what's being said. I served on a jury where the murder accused would only speak maori/te reo and wouldn't accept the jurisdiction of the court to be tried. Everything said by the accused had to be translated, and it was translated very poorly and stintingly by somebody whose FIRST language wasn't English. The accused was able to speak English, but wouldn't, just to be difficult. After more than a week, the accused changed plea, the jury thought it had all been a huge and frustrating waste of time, and we jurors all received a letter exempting us from further jury service as a result of the experience.
the problem is Maori want to keep asking for more sovereignty, benefits and specially treatment incrementally. They know that if they ask for everything upfront it could create a huge backlash. The Primary Language is ENGLISH - so department names should be in English first. The Bill attacks no one's rights it simply affirms that we should all be equal. Waitangi tribunal was supposed to be temporary, that is how it was sold to the nation, Helen clark had a crack at winding it up, so far it has cost every NZ taxpayer $30,000 is settlements each, and as part moari are 20% of the population so every Maori has taken $120,000 off their fellow taxpayers, the people in their street. Dear Buddy, I was born in 1959 and believe in the first version of the Treaty which was one page long. In 1974 a Treaty bill was introduced to parliament, the purpose of which was to provide for the observation and confirmation of the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and to determine claims about certain matters which are inconsistent with those principles. After 135 years of the Treaty, Maori claim the text of the Treaty in the English language differs from the text of the Treaty in the Maori language and therefore a tribunal was needed to be established to make recommendations on claims relating to the practical application of the principles of the Treaty and, for that purpose, to determine its meaning and effect and whether certain matters are inconsistent with those principles. In 1985 the act was amended to give the Waitangi Tribunal the authority to consider claims dating back to 1840, when the Treaty of Waitangi was signed. It also enlarged the tribunal's membership to enable it to handle the increased number of claims. It also required the tribunal to have a Māori majority. In 1988 tribunal membership and hearings expanded the tribunal's membership and abolished the requirement for a Māori majority. It also enabled different groups of tribunal members to investigate different claims simultaneously. And here we are in 2024, 31 year after NZ voted for MMP and our politicians can't determine and define treaty principles' entered into into at Waitangi between Her late Majesty Queen Victoria and the Maori people of New Zealand. Since this time all we have heard are stories that no body has bothered to investigate. Why?

Totally agree.. the treaty is not law and in fact in 1860 it was dropped completely. With the newly created add ons of the 1970&80's by Labour politicians, Maori activists and their lawyers, it ceased then to be our treaty... the add ons were the work of the judiciary whose role it is to interpret and not invent the law. .. and their interpretations completely changed the meaning of the old treaty.

When Americans talk about their constitution they actually cite the amendment. Not once have I heard anyone read out a single act in the treaty word for word when referring to it in the 50 years i've been alive. All I hear is that the Maori version is different which is true because the one in English is for the already (at the time) British citizens and would be weird to tell them they will become citizens which they already are.

The only reason Seymour is introducing the treaty principles Bill is because those who hold power and wealth don't like a judicial review finding that there is redress required and that redress will tip the scales even if slightly against their favour. Using English names for all government departments makes sense. We have many ethnicities in this country around 3 to 4% of people speak Maori It’s an international language. It makes sense to use English. So under section 2 of the treaty of waitangi, 28 legislation the Act and NZ first want to be able to use to make money but they cant because its stuck by law under the treaty. Some of the legislations like the conservation and protection of natural native plants, organisms etc land ,waterways are what they intend to free up for mining e.g waikoropupu springs in the south,which means arsenic will pollute it due to mining and so will the caving systems that are massive down there. This will poison underground water ways wells, impact on farming and the communities there . The majority of the money will not do anything for our economy and all resources taken with be sold and N.Z gets a small percent, the miners will most likely already be trained and be flown in. Same with gas, the hauraki gulf they aant open for fishing ,commercial shipping. Maori they want to vuy at the cheapest cost possible to also do all that. The government refuses to buy Maori owned land for full price which forces the greedy to change it to crown and sell possibly. But it also mean department of conservation has no say, although that was the old way of taking land by say 'th8s wet land on your property has threatened species so you cant use it and we will take carebof that." Yes alot of stuff half of the people dont get. What they do get is land will indirectly be confiscated once again and sadly by two guys who are of Maori decent who work for big corporations. Dear Buddy the reason that we have English names on government departments was the vast majority of New Zealanders did not understand them. Why make it difficult for everyone? Use the most prevalent language! That's NOT to say that people can't (if they wish) learn maori/te reo, but I declare right here and now that English gets me through all over the world, no matter where I visit, and I'm not about to learn maori myself at my age. I can speak more than one language, but I'm not adding another to the mix just to keep activists happy, because even if I were to do so, THAT wouldn't be the end of it, would it? There would be no respect for having done so because I still wouldn't know other things about maoridom. Such as (but not limited to) the protocol at a marae. I don't envisage ever visiting a marae again (been once, that was enough). In the same way that I have no intention of visiting a Jewish synagogue - not necessary, not part of my culture. No one is saying you have to learn a 2nd or 3rd or any other number of languages. Language is the way we communicate that much is obvious. But I can understand a tiny amount of Maori and can understand Spanish and can speak a little. But why wouldn't I use my first first language and speak English in New Zealand, but equally English doesn't need protection. In Spain, they speak Castilian predominantly, but they protect the Basques and Catalan languages. In the UK, they protect Welsh and Gaelic . Or do you think only white indigenous languages are worth protection and any languages spoken by people who have too much melanin in their skin isn't worthy of having their languages protected.

FORCING others to de-facto learn a minority language because the English has been diverted in a sentence or phrase is ludicrous. Necessitating having to look up and translate what's being said. I served on a jury where the murder accused would only speak maori/te reo and wouldn't accept the jurisdiction of the court to be tried. Everything said by the accused had to be translated, and it was translated very poorly and stintingly by somebody whose FIRST language wasn't English. The accused was able to speak English, but wouldn't, just to be difficult. After more than a week, the accused changed plea, the jury thought it had all been a huge and frustrating waste of time, and we jurors all received a letter exempting us from further jury service as a result of the experience.

Unfortunately you seem to be under the mistaken impression that a democratically elected representative is allowed to bring a bill that represents the views of his constituents to parliament for public debate. We don't live in that kind of democracy or at least not anymore it would seem.
This is the whole point - Maori activists know that they have got privilege and preference out of pushy aggressive, demanding, playing the indigenous card, blaming the rest of New Zealand for every ill, blaming colonisation for everything, and now they are confronted by a set of principles that judges did not give them preferential rights without any reference to the people of New Zealand. The reality is that we are a democracy - where the majority of people have control. Under what we have put up with for the last fifty years, the democratic right of the majority who have been blamed, smeared, called racist, etc. etc., has been fundamentally degraded. Now, for the first time, the majority of New Zealanders are saying "ENOUGH." And that means that Maori as a practical minority cannot prance around and demand more favourite treatment. This is what this is all about - grievance, petulent grievance. And Maori culture sucks up insult and craves revenge for insult. Waitangi tribunal was supposed to be temporary, that is how it was sold to the nation, Helen clark had a crack at winding it up, so far it has cost every NZ taxpayer $30,000 is settlements each, and as part moari are 20% of the population so every Maori has taken $120,000 off their fellow taxpayers, the people in their street. We are in a cost of living crisis Buddy, we cannot afford any more. We need this process to stop Buddy, time the whole race grift is wound up.

I was born in 1959 and believe in the first version of the Treaty which was one page long. In 1974 a Treaty bill was introduced to parliament, the purpose of which was to provide for the observation and confirmation of the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and to determine claims about certain matters which are inconsistent with those principles. After 135 years of the Treaty, Maori claim the text of the Treaty in the English language differs from the text of the Treaty in the Maori language and therefore a tribunal was needed to be established to make recommendations on claims relating to the practical application of the principles of the Treaty and, for that purpose, to determine its meaning and effect and whether certain matters are inconsistent with those principles. In 1985 the act was amended to give the Waitangi Tribunal the authority to consider claims dating back to 1840, when the Treaty of Waitangi was signed. It also enlarged the tribunal's membership to enable it to handle the increased number of claims. It also required the tribunal to have a Māori majority. In 1988 tribunal membership and hearings expanded the tribunal's membership and abolished the requirement for a Māori majority. It also enabled different groups of tribunal members to investigate different claims simultaneously. And here we are in 2024, 31 year after NZ voted for MMP and our politicians can't determine and define treaty principles' entered into into at Waitangi between Her late Majesty Queen Victoria and the Maori people of New Zealand. Since this time all we have heard are stories that no body has bothered to investigate. Why?

Totally agree.. the treaty is not law and in fact in 1860 it was dropped completely. With the newly created add ons of the 1970&80's by Labour politicians, Maori activists and their lawyers, it ceased then to be our treaty... the add ons were the work of the judiciary whose role it is to interpret and not invent the law. .. and their interpretations completely changed the meaning of the old treaty.

Not once have I heard anyone read out a single act in the treaty word for word when referring to it in the 50 years i've been alive. All I hear is that the Maori version is different which is true because the one in English is for the already (at the time) British citizens and would be weird to tell them they will become citizens which they already are.

Brilliant, Sean. Your interviewing approach made it very transparent how it is the objectors to this bill who are illogical and racist. The bill simply seeks to make everyone equal, rather than the pro-Māori institutional racial discrimination that currently exists in the public sector.

I’ve read the thing three times and am loosing my mind trying to figure out how people can be against it when there is nothing wrong with it unless all those people against it don’t want to live under one government and don’t want equal rights for all.

The only concrete example Buddy gave was not relevant to the Bill, and (as Michael Laws noted, on the Platform) was about giving less prominence to Maori names of various official bodies. That, Michael explained, was inserted by National and NZ First into the Coalition Agreement last year, which was promptly actioned (both of them now ducking for cover). It predated the ACT party's current Bill, and indeed seems not to be a clause that Buddy could point to in the Bill. That is one detail Sean seems to have missed in his otherwise masterly interview... Michael rightly asks: Why are protesters picking on Seymour's Bill, which simply invites discussion,, instead of calling out Nats and NZ 1st for pre-empting discussion?
