Probably the best Big Tire Garage episode so far. Reminds me of the old Xtreme 4x4 where there is tons of info and I learn things I can apply to my build. Good stuff!
Absolutely love everything on the Bomber! Hour long videos all day!!
it is always a treat watching you work
IMO Steel-It makes more sense for the frame, easy to mod/ repair tubes/ touch up chips and scratches. Personally not a fan of powdercoat, once you get that first chip and atmosphere gets to the base metal.....
I'm serious about purchasing the 2015 ford expedition from you once so please whenever you see this comment please reply an we'll go from there!!
Also wanna say thank you for all your time an all were e
effort you put forth to continuing to put great content for us all to watch!!
Shoot me an email bigtiregarage@gmail.com
Man this was such good and informative episode. Please keep it coming hands-on - it allows me to learn so much from you. Thank you for taking the time to shoot these. 🎉
I order all my under parts in bare steel for the same reason. I paint the underside with a spray can and when I come off the trail I can see any new hits and make sure everything in that area is ok,. do a nut and bolt check then respray it so it is ready for the next trip
Yep. Paint makes sense over powder coating for any vehicle that gets actual use. Easy to touchup paint. Powder coat "touchup" requires full tear down, likely sandblasting and then re-bake the whole item--nobody's doing that in the real world. It's trendy for sure, but it makes no sense in reality.
Absolutely enjoyed this video, little bit longer and way more indepth with the tricks and tips. Great video Ian
Love the Bomber Build!! I think the Bomber would look sweet with the panels and if you put a hood on it with a little cowl!!
When I seen that tube chassis the first thing I thought of was the poison spider build. I think that was my favorite from the old days.
Finally got around to watching this one and it’s probably my favorite Big Tire Garage episode to date! I love these longer videos packed with information. The Bomber Car is coming along nicely! 👊🏻👊🏻
🤟
Well worth it on the donor. By the time you mess around finding all the little parts to support a take-out engine, you've lost a bunch of time and money, where the full donor will have everything you'd potentially need. I bought a complete TDI Jetta so I'd have all the wiring and everything else to make the swap less of a hassle.
Man i like the long length videos! I already wanted to buy a bomber chassis before watching this and now I really want one.. one day!
Dude.....I LOVE this car
For seeing the font tire. Instead of closing it in with aluminum you can try plexiglass. Protect yourself and stay clean and still see out through
small world!! Heath was my HIPAA attorney haha
Sweet I run one of these plasma table the G8. We plasma cut up to 1 in. And torch cut up to 3 in plate
Yay! Full-length episode!
Ian was good to see a real full episode again I enjoyed this!
I saw you on Micifmaker I wanted get back to watching the expert. Do still come to Arkansas, I live in Benton Arkansas
Great video Ian, love learning from you!!😀
The Ford 3.5 V6 Ecoboost with the 4L60 will be a sick project! Really enjoy how much work you put into all these videos! Great work!
Thanks! 👍
Great content Ian. This was a helpful video. I am currently building a Trail Chassis and it is good to see it going together while I am collecting parts. Going to get a 6.0 today.
I really enjoyed the long detailed format. Thanks so much!
Nice shout out to VGG / Derek, another YT favorite on my subscribe list...
Ian you can use yellow pine and the burning finish on the wood will look completely different with a lot more grain showing up than the spruce you used on this one. I built an entire living room suite this way with my father when I was a kid.
I have an Ecoboost in my F-150 and it has no problem hauling me and my Jeep from Ohio to Moab and back.
I'd say ditch the factory Tcase, there are adapters from advanced adapters and others to use the 6r80 with the np231/bw1356 (etc) and atlus cases. I know of a character that built his own adapter vs buying one in a bronco as the 1356 input and 6r80 output shafts are same spline and diameter. Loving the progress on the Bomber, keep up the good work!
we are missing the chance to see the family truckster ford on tons and fourtys ...make it happen ian and take 6 of us wheeling with ya
It’s coming along. In the footwells to finish that inner fender well area, you could do expanded metal so you could still see your tire but wouldn’t be a big, open space.
I just honestly hate the look of expanded metal on a buggy....makes it look like a tractor
@@BigTireGarage fair enough. Looking forward to seeing it finished, definitely been a cool build to follow.
Awesome to watch this build as I just seen on Wrecked Gears channel, about the bomber crawler kit, I alrighty have the rc crawler bug, now I'm getting the 1:1crawler bug, lol
The spring rate of a shock can be assumed to decreases in a linear manner for the first ~12°. After that it decreases as a sin function. Rule of thumb would be about a 0.3% decrease in spring rate per degree of angle tilted for the first 12 degrees.
I installed a pice of Lexian in the foot well to see threw, but still be protected from mud and dirt spray from the tire.
Great video. Just saw the shakedown run of the Bomber car and that's pretty rad. That Expy would make a really cool overland build but can't wait to see what you do with the drivetrain!
What camera set up are you using? Seems that it has a hard time looking down at your work. I keep trying to look under my monitor at what you're doing.
could you install brackets at the filler panel under the power steering pump to hold plexiglass, that way you could still see the tire but still get some protection from any rocks, dirt and debris the tire might throw back and with using brackets you could cut several pieces of plexi to the same size and just swap them out when they get to scratched or damaged.
Was thinking of doing that
you could do a lexan panel , you can see the tire and keep dust out near the brake pedal.
Bomber is looking sexy!! That was a super fun day hanging out and making that sign! Was not expecting to be making something out of wood in the big tire garage 😂. Love the content with all the behind the scenes action!
Glad to see always improving your projects, most of all why you like some stuff and why you want to change a few things along with the effects of your changes made. Your frame improvements should make it stronger as well as show how forces work in different ways on different areas of your Bomber. Keep on inventing !! (improving)
Freaking awesome man 😮 💪💪💪💪💪😍😍😍
Use some clear plexi on the lower panels like Shannon’s Campbell RZR mostly to keep mud off your feet
i was thinking of doing that as well
bomber is looking good
Thanks
sweet
I remember watching this guy on spike tv when spike was a new channel on cable
Could you explain how to do a hand clutch on a wrangler?? I'm disabled and want to drive a standard again. I know its a lot to ask. Just thought I'd ask. Using right hand
Please use the screen on your phone/camera so we can see what you are pointing at.
Ian, the 4 doors and hatch will sell for as much as you paid for the entire Expedition through LKQ. Check with collision centers. We have one in the shop now putting a roof on. Wish we needed doors or hatch and I would help you recoup some of your money.
Thanks for heads up...
Thanks for heads up...
I’d do the kick panels out of clear lexan, still have view of the tire placement but keeps rocks from sneaking up through there.
Have you thought about mounting the intake manifold backwards on the engine? I probably do more river stuff than you plan on but that's how I'm planning on doing my buggy, keeps it out of the dust underneath the dash area
Yes I have it that way on my goatbuilt LJ....on a tube buggy like this with no firewall it really won't make a huge difference
Amazing episode!
I think I may have to correct you on your analogy for the coilover angle. If you mount a shock at a 45 it will actually make the suspension stiffer than straight up and down. It sounds silly but if you use small scale it helps more to understand. I like to use rc cars to make sense of things. Take a rc car with different holes for the shock mounting. Mount them as vertical as you can then press on the rc car and you’ll see how soft it is. Now lay them down as much as possible with the shock positions and you’ll notice the suspension is much stiffer
NOPE....you sir are wrong you need to do some learning on the subject....angle drop s the spring rate and you have to actually do some math to come up with the correct rate......
Here is some reading for you
www.qa1.net/tech-center/spring-rate-tech
What you are probably feeling in the RC car is excessive drag on the internals of the shock....not the spring getting stiffer.
I Love the long form video.
I would dsuz fasten the panel on instead of bolt. Quicker removal for cleaning the inside and such.
👍🏽🇺🇸👍🏽 love the hour plus videos from you..
Just wondering about the Jeep transfer case holding up to hp/ torque of the v8. What case do you use and any modifications to it?
NP241 out of a JK...and no real modifications that can handle some serious torque
Love your videos.
Thank you
Next time you need a bend in sheet goods, do it over tube. No sharp edges!
love the build videos. thanks Sir.
Awesome
I love watching you fabricate, do you have formal training? or did you learn as you went aka trial and error?
I love that engine. Regardless of the haters. The only thing better (I suspect)is the HO in the Raptor & F150 Limited
I am super stoked to give it a try
@@BigTireGarage In the F150 there’s a ‘sport’ mode that is pretty lively. Have fun!
Ian please take my Bronco and make it a badass rig! 👍🏻
Is there a build series on when they bent the tube and chassis? I’d love to see it from the start. I can’t find it
Built this one on motortrend
Ian love the channel. Happy holidays
Great video
I don't know if you saw eastwood has a small air belt sander that bends to do tube now
Is there a shakedown run video of this buggy? Love the videos, keep up the good work!
Yes on Motortrend
Love the longer video but please hire a camera guy or point the camera at what you are talking about. Numerous times you're talking about bending something here and measuring to there and we are looking at the headrest or the floor. Love your stuff though!
RUclips does not pay enough for me to hire a camera man for these vids....I bet I make 400 bucks off thos video
good video thanks
love it
Please drop a power stroke in the expedition!!! 🇨🇦
No No No....just pulling the Eco Boost and getting rid of the truck
Would a lip on the top of the angle where the switch pro and gauge is be a plus to keep the rain off of it all
will probably make a cover that I can drop on when parked
Hey Ian! Been watchin your shows for a long time. Love all the offroad builds n info. Im workin on a build now. My 84 f150 stepside 4x4 needs a new frame. Got a 00 f350 4x4, goina shorten the frame to fit my body, 4 or 6" lift, n ive got some 22x12 wheels withs 37x13.5 m/t tires. Out of all your crawlers, do u have any rc crawlers? Ive got close to 20 myself lol
I did when my son was younger.....but I never really got into them to be honest
On the spring rates, I'd be curious about how the leverage of the arms comes into play? Ie, having the shocks on the lower links prerunner style takes less effort to compress than if it were on the axle itself. I know that having them on the trailing arm allows more flex, but I wonder if that might also be part of your problem.
Its not a problem...trailing arms are amazing...you get more travel out of a shock and better packaging. You just have to adjust spring rate to compensate....you need more rate depending on the location of the shock on the arm. this car has 21" of wheel travel in the back and 17" of wheel travel in the front using 14" shocks!!! I used Randy's base rates for his buggies..but he uses different shocks (king vs Bilstein) on his rigs so the valving is different, and his locations are slightly different. This is just a tuning issue and it is what awning a buggy is all about!!!
I am installing an oddfire Buick V6 in my cj5. Curious as to what degree of pitch to mount engine? A lean backwards forwards to what degree?
A couple of questions. Who does all your editing for the channel. Do you do anything else out of the shop to generate income besides the TV, and youtube productions.
Great work Ian. Now if we could only see what you are looking at would be even better. Just sayin'.
Being that I am someone with a healthy understanding of their OCD level, where do you draw the line between perfection and good enough when fabricating?
Ian love the long episode, who makes that chase light I like how slim it is? Thanks for the great content.
It is from Baja Designs
Ian - when you hemmed the edges of your body panels, it raised them off of the tubes they were mounted to slightly. The body panel mounting brackets still look like they are welded so the top of them is flush with the top of the tube. Are you putting a spacer in there?
The edges of the panels drop down over the tabs....that is what the benefit of that rolled edge does
Do the front wheels kick up many rocks on the trails? You might want a panel in to deflect them.👍🇨🇦
Not really....I am gonna leave em open for the next wheeling trip and then decide
are you welding nuts on the back side of your panel tabs?
You trust a switch pros more than circuit breakers? Whenever I think about items like switch pros or spod I always equate them to the Mopar Power Distribution computer that goes bad every couple years..
The switch pros is fed by a circuit breaker so it still has overload protection in it....and the solid state stuff is really good
Dude! I've been asking people all over this area of work to do something with the Ecoboost! Not because I think they are the greatest but because I'm curious. NO ONE will do it. They all say its not worth it and not tell me why.
It is not a Cheap engine....I tried finding a "take out" and they were around 10K and up that is a lot of money for a junkyard engine I think that is why
@@BigTireGarage Agreed. Dollar for dollar I think an LS is probably everyone's go to. I'm curious for the people that already have an ecoboost, or are thinking about them. So many people love them. I think the ecoboost owners have kinda been left on the sidelines in the motor sports arena. What is it capable of? What can be done with it? Why choose it (if at all)? How's the aftermarket? If I'm looking at a truck, (Hemi, LS, Ecoboost) how do they compare? Straight up. I'm not suggesting you should answer these. I'm just excited to see someone trying something with an ecoboost.
Good Morning, Ian. What abrasives, i.e. grinder discs, cutoff wheels, flap discs do you prefer to use?
I use mostly Benchmark Abrasives
Do you know how to make a unique cut?
Unique up on it!
When choosing your springs for your coil overs are you aiming for a particular suspension frequency?
Is it possible to put mesh as the infill panels where your feet are? Can still see through them, but also stops you copping a rock to the face/legs/nuts
Where did you get the Hex Weld Washers from. Very cool 😎
I get them from 4xstore
The hairs gettin' long... great video. :)
Where do you run the steam ports on your LS engines? I see some people running it into either the water pump or radiator.
Water pump on most of them.
How is the heat when you are wheeling? Seems like it would get really hot with the heat from the Engine, trans and radiator placement? It seems like it would get rather warm when you are not moving much?
No heat at all TBH....with no hood and other panels the heats tends to rise out the top....plus with no radiator fan blowing hot air back at you from the front it is actually quite comfortable...well tube buggy comfortable
What is your opinion on trailing arms for a Jeep? Would I have more benefits for a two-door over a four-door
Going to be the one to say it "STEEL IT" not steels it
@Ian - looks like since the Willys wagon (when you borrowed Kevin’s bead roller) you bought your own motorized unit. Was buying the motorized unit a non brainer or would a manual bead roller for the general hobbyist suffice? What are the key diesto buy when starting out?
I went with the powered roller because when I was doing larger panels I could not do them by myself....I am by no means a "good" bead roller but I am learning and loving to add a new skill to the shelf
What ever happened to the moon buggy, and would you ever build a small single.seater buggy again?
What type of aluminum did you use for the panels 3003, 5052? and how thick?
Question on the commachi I like odd engine swaps and any thing that is different from the usual LS swap but why a 3.8? Love the show and the builds
Cheap, aftermarket support..BOOST
Boost makes everything better
👍👍
Did I miss a video? When was the Bomber finished. And man, some of those chassis welds look pretty rough 🤔
We finished it on Motortrend...not every weld can be perfect...no matter how hard you try
What’s the budget to build one of these? Just curious to see what it would take
This particular car has about 60-70k in parts alone...labor on top of that
put lexan in that lower panel. Then you can see the tire and not get muddy.
With all your projects how do you juggle all the work to be done and keep so organized?
Lists...lots of lists
