    I order all my under parts in bare steel for the same reason. I paint the underside with a spray can and when I come off the trail I can see any new hits and make sure everything in that area is ok,. do a nut and bolt check then respray it so it is ready for the next trip

      Yep. Paint makes sense over powder coating for any vehicle that gets actual use. Easy to touchup paint. Powder coat "touchup" requires full tear down, likely sandblasting and then re-bake the whole item--nobody's doing that in the real world. It's trendy for sure, but it makes no sense in reality.

    Well worth it on the donor. By the time you mess around finding all the little parts to support a take-out engine, you've lost a bunch of time and money, where the full donor will have everything you'd potentially need. I bought a complete TDI Jetta so I'd have all the wiring and everything else to make the swap less of a hassle.

    The spring rate of a shock can be assumed to decreases in a linear manner for the first ~12°. After that it decreases as a sin function. Rule of thumb would be about a 0.3% decrease in spring rate per degree of angle tilted for the first 12 degrees.

    could you install brackets at the filler panel under the power steering pump to hold plexiglass, that way you could still see the tire but still get some protection from any rocks, dirt and debris the tire might throw back and with using brackets you could cut several pieces of plexi to the same size and just swap them out when they get to scratched or damaged.

    I think I may have to correct you on your analogy for the coilover angle. If you mount a shock at a 45 it will actually make the suspension stiffer than straight up and down. It sounds silly but if you use small scale it helps more to understand. I like to use rc cars to make sense of things. Take a rc car with different holes for the shock mounting. Mount them as vertical as you can then press on the rc car and you’ll see how soft it is. Now lay them down as much as possible with the shock positions and you’ll notice the suspension is much stiffer

    • @BigTireGarage
      @BigTireGarage  Год назад +2

      NOPE....you sir are wrong you need to do some learning on the subject....angle drop s the spring rate and you have to actually do some math to come up with the correct rate......
      Here is some reading for you
      www.qa1.net/tech-center/spring-rate-tech
      What you are probably feeling in the RC car is excessive drag on the internals of the shock....not the spring getting stiffer.

    On the spring rates, I'd be curious about how the leverage of the arms comes into play? Ie, having the shocks on the lower links prerunner style takes less effort to compress than if it were on the axle itself. I know that having them on the trailing arm allows more flex, but I wonder if that might also be part of your problem.

    • @BigTireGarage
      @BigTireGarage  Год назад +2

      Its not a problem...trailing arms are amazing...you get more travel out of a shock and better packaging. You just have to adjust spring rate to compensate....you need more rate depending on the location of the shock on the arm. this car has 21" of wheel travel in the back and 17" of wheel travel in the front using 14" shocks!!! I used Randy's base rates for his buggies..but he uses different shocks (king vs Bilstein) on his rigs so the valving is different, and his locations are slightly different. This is just a tuning issue and it is what awning a buggy is all about!!!
