what are good drills to make the feet angle out, my feet seem to be pointed forward through the whole kick phase of breast stroke, any input will be great help.
Hi Edwin, I think most people have far to wide of a pull. If you watch Adam peaty he has a very tight and quick pull which allows him to have such a high tempo. In the 200 breaststroke, although, tempo isn’t quite as important so you can get away with a little bigger of a pull.
Hi! I like breaststroke too! How far back can your elbows go when you pull? Is there a rule that they should not pass shoulders ? I seem to kick down instead of kick back though my intention is to kick back. As a result, I swim somewhat up hill down hill instead of forward. What do you think I can do to fix this?
Hi! There is no rule saying elbows cannot pass the shoulders, I just would advise against it because this can create a lot of drag. This problem you mentioned with kick is actually very common and is probably caused by dropping your knees during your kick instead of keeping them close to parallel with your body line. You can practice by doing breaststroke kick in streamline on your back, as this will force you to not lift your upper legs (otherwise your knees will come out of the water.)
Hi Miles, you can generate power in both the scoop and the scull, and most of the pull power will actually come from the scoop. The scull, although, is very important to set up an efficient scoop.
Hi Derek, How should I focus on keeping my elbows high during the pull? Next, you mention the momentum from the head; should I let the head lay down or snap it down using my core and neck? I am mainly looking to increase my stroke rate and swim correctly.
Hello, While I was learning the high elbow catch, I would focus on first hinging at the wrists and moving my hands, next hinging at the elbow and moving just my forearms (creating a high elbow pull), and finally using my shoulders to pull with the full force of my arms. This process may feel a bit choppy at first, but it will become more fluid over time. This high elbow catch is also very important for the other strokes (especially free and fly), so it is a great thing to work on. With the head, you want to bring it down at a similar speed as the speed at which your arms “shoot” forward, and I would definitely focus on making this combined motion fast in order to increase your stroke rate. It is also key to get the head looking straight down at the bottom of the pool as soon as possible as it enters the water after a breath. Let me know if you have any more questions!
@@--4606 This is a very common problem for breaststrokers. One thing a lot of people do is drop their hips and legs when they lift their upper bodies to breathe. What I would recommend is trying to pull the hips forward as you breathe instead of letting them drop. Also, try not to let your knees get too deep. Your feet shouldn’t quite break the surface but they should come fairly close.
@@--4606 Good question. If you watch right at the beginning slo-mo part of the video, notice how when I breathe my hips don’t get any deeper in the water, instead they just move forward as my upper body comes out of the water. It is easy, especially when you get tired to drop your hips up and down through the stroke, but they really should stay at the same level in the water the whole race.
Hi Derek, not related to breaststroke but I used to be able to swim underwater after push-offs as long as I wanted but now as soon as I do my first dolphin kick,my body floats up and is slowing me down, please help
I would really focus on the angle of your push off. If that doesn't help, try to tighten your core to make sure your arms aren't lifting up as you dolphin kick. Btw - sorry for the late reply!
Hey Derek! I am Vishal and I am challenging myself to learn swimming in 2weeks. Anyway I only know how to float in shallow and I really want to learn how to float in the deepened so I was wondering if I could get any tips from you😊
Hey Vishal! One easy thing you can do to float higher in the water is make sure your lungs are full of oxygen. Also, keep your chin and chest up with as little of your head out of the water as possible. If you try to lift your head up this will drop your hips and make it much harder to float.
That’s a good point. They probably are in this video. I would like to get an underwater video with a tech suit on because normally the tech suit will lift my hamstrings a bit.
I’m trying to improve my breast stroke from a 110 to sub 1 min but can’t get any stroke work. I feel like it’s my lack of power which is my kick and I think this may have helped I will see at my next practice. Is it also helpful to swim against a band?
It can be helpful to swim against a band, as long as your knees can handle it. If they start to hurt at all, try swimming breaststroke with dolphin kick against the band. The main way I improve my kick power is in the weight room with squats, lunges, etc. I will make a video about that also eventually.
one of my problems is going too vertical with my stroke (even though I finally fixed this sort of by keeping my chin in one position) I find that I cannot get any distance per stroke. My breaststroke kick is fine because im really strong in my kick but my upper body screws everything up
Interesting, I would first make sure that any time your head is in the water it is in line with your spine. Also, the balance between lifting up and shooting forward is important. If you watch an Olympic or worlds final most of the swimmers lift up similar amounts and have similar head positions. I have tried to mimic that over the years and now have started to focus more in on technical details.
Derek Maas kevin cordes does it really well especially in the first 100 for his 200 breast his stroke is curved but he’s got a ton of easy early speed I cannot glide in my breaststroke ahaha I can swim with a higher tempo otherwise I usually add with that
Your stroke looks very good! I wouldn’t worry about not being able to glide fast right now, for me I can only really glide fast when I’m fully tapered and I only glide long in the 200. I would focus on getting your head in line with your spine like I mentioned earlier (you can kind of tell from the video your head is still pointed a little forward when in the water.) Also, I noticed especially on the second 25 that your elbows are creating some drag as they are a little wide in the middle of the pull. Every stroke, especially in the 50/100 I like to think about making the elbows tight and narrow during the shoot phase of the stroke.

Thank you so much! That was exactly the intention
Glad this came out on schedule! I always look forward to the posts!
This should give you at least a couple seconds next time you do a 100 IM!
Outstanding video! Great technique tips!
clean informational and most importantly goated
subbed
🔥 thanks bro
Excellent video
Very good effort 👍 keep going 🤗
Thank you!
Excellent post, thank you!
Thank you brah I’m swimming state tomorrow this oughtta help a bit
Good luck!!
Knew u were gonna make it big congrats on the title and gl at NC’s
Thank you!!
peaty is one of my favorite swimmers of all time
Me too!
Thank you so much sir
Thanx bro, for the tip, I'm sure it will help me

Narrow pull vs wide pull, which is better?

Are you supposed to generate power during the scoop portion or just during the scull? It looks like just the scull but I’m not too sure.

Honestly still get 90% of my power from my arms
I can’t figure out the kick to save my life

Glad to hear it!

Nice video
and my stupid highschool coach wanted my feet to not touch
Do I need to bend my wrists in breaststroke like I do in freestyle?
Ideally you wouldn't. This is actually an issue of mine that I have been working on.
Make same for the rest 3 swimming types.
