Did it ever occur to the maker of this video that the airplane was the object of interest? The entire video is of the guy talking about the PLANE! Show the Goddamn plane!!!!!!!
Yeah he should do another video to, like you said, show us the G.d D.mn Plane! I think the guy did need to tell his & his uncle's story. So now is time for video #2. 😂😂
Wow. The dedication and love that couple showed as he built his dream with her full support is actually epic. And that’s before even seeing the finished piece of aviation art that is the P-38. I just wish there had been some video of it in the air where it belongs.
Free video, history about its origin shared. Now on to another video showing the airplane in detail; don’t you just love this RUclips thing! Free no charge, but still some commenters act like they’re paying for this content; unbelievable!
Hard to say what's "best." There's a scale B-17 flying and yesterday that WAR Corsair flew 0.7 hours. I think this Lightning is beautiful but I agree with the other comments: we'd like to see it fly, please. Thank you!
I was privileged to have spent a day flying with Jim as compiled some 13-14 years ago. Just a passenger and he was co pilot. Fascinating to hear him talk about the builds.
Good one Ed! Thanks for that super interesting interview on a fantastic replica/homebuilt. Guess next one could be Tom Hodgson's amazing B-29... 😉 Best 👋🏻
Real nice aircraft and great build !! There is also a homebuilt, B-17 out there somewhere, ( I don't know what scale ) that is impressive to see flying !
Awesome build, but I have just one question. Why not build to full scale? Is this a kit and is only offered in 2/3 scale? If that is the case, then why did the manufacturer of the kit make it a full-scale version?
The builder designed it and made it all by himself as a home project. Full scale it would have taken A LOT more space, and it would have been A LOT more expensive and time consuming to build.
I was informed long ago by a WWII era “pursuit” pilot and FAA examiner that the term “contra” rotating refers to opposite rotating props centered on the same axis as on the Tupolev tu-95 bomber. These are "counter-rotating" props. Not sure how that was accomplished on this scale P-38, though I know that some production twins like the Beech Duchess have counter rotating props/engines that could serve as in this installation. Interestingly, the descending blades on this plane appear to be outboard like the real P-38’s. Not so in the Duchess whose descending blades are inboard, which reduces adverse yaw during single-engine operations.
I found one still photograph of this plane with the builder and his wife flying, going on a vacation. Can not find a video of this plane in the air. My advice is to not fly the plane and keep it in flying condition out of respect for the man and his wife. The loss of this P-38 would be a great shame. It is a treasure and be preserved for future aircraft people who appreciate this dedication and craftsmanship in this build. Beautiful peace of work.
Considering that the P-38's cockpit was a tight fit for the average pilot at the time, I can only imagine what it must be like to shoe-horn yourself into this thing. It's beautiful, but...
I've looked up videos for this plane and not one does he ever actually fly it. Just talks about it. Just look at it, look at it. Wouldja look at thayat..... "Just look at that" ~Ed Bassmaster~
No. The original flew with V1710 Allison engines, with, at the time, a top secret tubosupercharger in each tail boom. It was designed in the 1930s to meet the USAAF requirement for a pursuit aircraft capable of making 360mph in level flight. It made over 400 mph, in 1939. The iconic version of the P-38 was the P-38L, with hydraulically assisted control surfaces, dive brakes, and an Allison V1710 engine that could make nearly 1900 horsepower and that had a service ceiling of 45,000 feet, well above the ratings of the Packard Merlin used in the P-51 models.
Why must every airplane video begin with the beginning of fly or the first time you’re fluent aircraft? Can’t you just tell the story? Isn’t that difficult? Is it because you have the need for someone to watch for longer than they really want to? I am out
"The workmanship on the nose alone..." I wish we could have actually seen it. What a disappointing video. You literally showed us nothing of the aircraft.
Yeah, nice that you interviewed the nephew, but the PLANE, Boss, the plane!
The plane doesn't talk! LOL ;)
@@ILSRWY4 yea but it would have been nice to go around the plane and actually show it off
Yes Tatoo! Smiles everyone smiles. 😂
😂😂😂😂 the Plane! ❤
Did it ever occur to the maker of this video that the airplane was the object of interest? The entire video is of the guy talking about the PLANE! Show the Goddamn plane!!!!!!!
Yeah, me too.. I wanted to see more of the cockpit , and the internals. AND it flying...!!!
lol i thought that was well, through all the talking i wanted them to go around the plane and actually show us the full thing
Well, they had to mention EAA and its presidents a bunch of times.
Does it fly? All talk makes one believe it doesn’t

I wouldn’t mind them chatting in the background as this beautiful aircraft is shown in it’s entirety ❤ what the heck over?
Magnificent work of art👍

Great video! Wanted to see it fly! :)
She is a real treasure to us that hard to believe.

There should’ve been more video or pictures of the airplane.
I was privileged to have spent a day flying with Jim as compiled some 13-14 years ago. Just a passenger and he was co pilot. Fascinating to hear him talk about the builds.
a work of art
Good one Ed! Thanks for that super interesting interview on a fantastic replica/homebuilt.

I wished you would have shown more of the aircraft than the conversation
Wouldn't it be great if these 2/3rds replica aircraft had 2/3rds the horsepower of their full-scale big brothers!
I agree. Too bad the Thunder Mustang guys never tried the 38. THAT would have been awesome, to see a Thunder 38 flying with Thunder Mustang.
Remarkable aircraft, extraordinary effort to design and build.
What a legacy for your family William.
We all want to see flight video!!
AIUI there are still tests being flown (or there were back then)
@@FLYERTV could you show us more of the plane please
Would love to see it in formation with Bally's Bomber!!
That would be a great photoshoot!
Awesome Lightning! Like the real one!
Great plane, right sizing!!👍👍👍
So impressive. Speachless.
How come you didn’t let us see the plane!!!!!!
STAGGERING!!
Incredible.....
No Footage of the Aircraft, Footage only of the Nephew 🧑🍳
Real nice aircraft and great build !! There is also a homebuilt, B-17 out there somewhere, ( I don't know what scale ) that is impressive to see flying !
The B-17 is 1/3 scale.
There are also several WAR planes, flyable reproductions of several WWII fighters. Those are wooden and 1/2 scale.
have yet to see it fly.....
Beautiful aircraft.
There is not kit, just the builder making the drawings, parts, structure, systems etc. etc.
Bravo.perfect
One of a kind and simply amazing.
It's beautiful. Looks like it has contra rotating engines,

Yak yak yak show the plane
Who’s the star here! The nephew or the plane?! 💤 😴
GHS We want to see the entire plane, and see it fly. Good story though.
Wonder how its V1 cut would play out.
Drop the LOUD music. Spoiled the whole thing.
Wish we could have seen more than 4 seconds of it from the rear
Can't tell if it's the best because you never showed us the friggin plane.
It's a great story, but this video could have been so much better by showing the aircraft while using the interview as narrative.
Al-you-Mini-um
Ah-Looooom-in-um 😁
Would have been nice to see more of the plane instead of two guys yakking about it. We could have listened to them while you showed more of the plane.
I found one still photograph of this plane with the builder and his wife flying, going on a vacation. Can not find a video of this plane in the air. Pretty sure it was built in San Angelo Texas
If you are going to that much trouble...just build it full scale.
Considering that the P-38's cockpit was a tight fit for the average pilot at the time, I can only imagine what it must be like to shoe-horn yourself into this thing. It's beautiful, but...
Clearly you never heard of the guy who built a 2/3 scale B-17

Not much better than click bait. Show it flying!!!....Dork!
what about the plane?
Wish they'd shown it flying? Here's a real one:
ruclips.net/video/fKK1tFbzVkA/видео.html
So did they win something?
Every video I see about this plane is a boring gab fest. Are we ever going to see it fly?
You buried the lead. Step aside and walk around the airplane while you play the audio from the interview. SHOW THE AIRPLANE!
"Al U. Meenium"???
if its 2\3 scale it must be underpowered. Didnt the original have two merlin engines?
No. The original flew with V1710 Allison engines, with, at the time, a top secret tubosupercharger in each tail boom. @@boydgrandy5769 so this 2/3 scale is woefully underpowered.

Who cares !!!! ........show the bloody aircraft.
To slow.😥
Not worth watching. All yap and don’t get to see the plane.
Boring , geek alert ! 😂
Yakati yak yak yak
Beautiful aircraft.
