Bruce! Crushed it man. And I love the outtakes. The explanation of how it works in the middle of the video was good too. I honestly didn’t know. Simple yet smart.
Thanks, Stephen! Appreciate the feedback! I was watching my edit last night and realized it was missing that explanation. So I went out and recorded it. Glad to know it came across well!
Beautiful bellows, simple explanation. Thanks! I can’t wait to make mine!
Glad I was able to explain it well! Thanks for watching.
I really like that explanation of how the internal mechanism works. I also thought it would have been more complicated. Great video man. Keep them coming! 👍
Thank you very much! I was so surprised about the mechanism also!
Great to finally understand the mechanism. And how to make the one way valve!
Glad it was helpful!
This is a cool project Bruce
Thanks, Gavin! I still use it all the time!
I love your bellow!!!!!!!!!
Thanks so much!
Thank you for the added explanation. It frees up the design a lot for what could be made!
Glad it helped! Thanks for watching!
Really, really nice!!! I work wit leather and thinking about making the bellows!!! Well done!!! Thanks for sharing !!
Glad you found it useful! Make one...they're handy to have around.
Very good and great idea
Thanks so much!
Did not realise the mechanism was so straight forward! Great job man, that was a unique project
I didn’t either until I started looking into it! Thanks for the kind words, Robin!
Nicely done, dude. The leather looks awesome!
Thanks, Robert! I love the contrast in leather and wood.
Good job! I was looking for Uilleann Pipes bellows and stumbled onto your video. :)
Thanks so much! Glad you found it!
@@BruceAUlrich You're welcome!
Very good engineering
Thank you!
I definitely would have messed up the intake hole without that so thank you for the tip!
Thanks so much for explaining how the bellows works, and what the double-hole mechanism is for! I literally came here with that question in mind, and it was cool to learn what I came for, and stick around to watch the rest of the process, too.
Glad it was helpful! I was fascinated to learn about how it worked when I dug into it.
never wondered about how the bellows actually work inside with the flaps. very interesting, thanks
Glad you checked it out!
Its looking really beautiful. Good job, thanks
Thank you!
Nice project Bruce👌👌
Thank you very much!
Great project Bruce!
Thanks, Zach! Appreciate that!
Very nice!
Thank you! It was a fun project!
Great build Bruce, it's got me thinking how to incorporate leather into my work now!
I keep thinking the same thing, Tommy! It is such a fun medium to work with. Thanks for checking out the project and for the kind words!
Skilfully done
Thanks so much! Appreciate you taking the time to watch!
Great video Bruce! Sure beats the heck out of blowing in the fire to get it up to temperature. I like the combination of wood and leather too!
Thank you! Yeah, I’ve done my fair share of blowing on a fire and that’s for the birds. Ha ha
Love the wood/leather combo, Bruce! And that leather is awesome looking. excellent color choice!
Thanks so much, Sean! I really like how the leather looks with the maple too.
Here is how confident I am, I hit that like button before I even finished watching the video, and you did not disappoint. Very cool project! I was actually thinking of making a foot-powered bellows for a forge (not sure if it's going to happen, but it's nice to dream), so this is very helpful! And I totally love the outtakes and being silly, great job Bruce!
The Every Maker - Nick Wow! Thanks for the confidence, Nick! And I appreciate the feedback on the outtakes.
In health class today, my 9 year old is learning about the lungs. The book referenced the lungs working like a bellows, so we went online to find pics and videos of how a bellows works. We found your video first and it was great because my 12 yr old watched as well and although he did know what a bellows is, he learned something new from you about how they actually work during your explanation. Thanks for making this video so it could enhance our health class as well as teach new things about how things work.
Hi Sonja! Thanks so much for letting me know this! It made me smile to know my explanation helped!
Bruce, this project rocks! Your best vid yet, imo. Great vo, and cool shots. I was cracking up at the outtakes!
Thanks so much, Jonny! I really appreciate the feedback. I was hesitant at first to include the outtakes but I might do that more going forward.
Such an awesome project. There are many other ways to put air into a fire. This is the best way by far!
Thanks so much! I’ve used some other ways like my backpack blower but that’s just too much. Ha ha
Great video Bruce! Very cool project. Makes me want to try out leather. Great work!
Thanks, Mitch! You should totally try leather out! Follow @AcadiaLeather on Instagram. I’ve ordered from them multiple times and they’re great...& cheap!
Nice video Bruce! The leatherwork looks challenging but came out great.
Thanks, Mike! Yeah, the leather was hard to size and get to fit around that weird shape, but it turned out just fine.
Thanks so much for this video! I'm working on a project for a sculpture class where we have to make something from a wooden chair, and since mine was a colonial style historically, I decided to make a bellows. This really helped, I would not have figured out that internal mechanism on my own, or how it was hinged!
Glad you found it helpful! It's a pretty fascinating, but simple, mechanism.
Love this project and the video was great. I love the outtakes. The detail on the bellows... awesome! Beautiful combination of colors and materials. The compass trick is a good one to remember too. Great job man!
Thanks, Doug! Really appreciate all of the feedback! I was hesitant to include the outtakes/bloopers. I might do more of that going forward. I think I was channeling my inner DN Handcrafted on the contrast of colors. ;)
Super interesting! No idea how they actually worked, so simple its great. Well done as well finished thing look beautiful.
Thanks so much, Edd! I’m pleased with how it turned out. It is actually more refined looking ham I imagined. Ha
-+- the value was a real surprise. God video- thanks
Glad to hear it! Thanks for the nice comment and for watching!
Very nice. I would have like to see how you designed the hinge mechanism and what hardware you used.
the flap is definitely interesting, and seemingly crucial to the function
It is for sure. I thought it was more complicated than this. Nope
@@BruceAUlrich I am far from a technical builder, especially functioning innards like this. I’ve never worked with leather either, but this for some reason seems like an approachable project that I can have some creative fun with. Also, need a pair to superheat metal
Great Video! you nailed it :)
Thanks so much!
Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Awesome build! Super creative. Nice shirt too, btw. I'm shocked they haven't commented yet :)
Thanks so much! Appreciate that! Yeah, I need to show them the Merch I’m sporting!
Bruce, that's awesome. The explanation of the mechanism really makes sense. Is that a bake oven? I've got a pizza oven I made about 4 years ago and I've been dying to find a bellows for it. Not make, buy. Not any more buddy, with your video I'm set to make me one. Where did you pick up that leather?
Thanks so much for letting me know it was helpful to explain the mechanism. This is not a bake oven...that would be fun to have. It is just an outdoor fireplace that we have to enjoy some time on the back porch. I want to see what bellows you make! I picked up the leather from Acadia Leather. Look them up on Instagram. They run specials there & they’re great folks! I just grabbed the upholstery tacks from amazon. Click my affiliate link in the description if you want the same ones. ;)
Hey thanks for responding. When I make one I'll post it here...although, if I find my own unique way of doing it, may I reference you in a video? This has opened up my mind to leather. I've actually been cracking my skull against the wall trying to think of other things I can make out of leather.
Yeah, mention me in the video. That would be cool. Did you check out Acadia Leather? I got a whole side (22sq ft) for like $35 shipped
I just got in and was pulling up my browser. Do you have a link somewhere so that I can get you some change from them?
You mean like an affiliate link? I don’t think they do that. I would just go through Instagram and if you end up ordering, tell them @Brudaddy sent you. I’ve chatted with them some on IG, but I’m not big enough for them to want to sponsor me. ;) Yet. ;)
well made
Thanks so much, Ron! It was a fun build!
Great project! I had no idea the inner mechanism was so simple! Fascinating! I find that making a paper template can also help with leather, but that shape was so odd maybe some cheap muslin fabric would work better? Fantastic job on making that work out so well!
Great idea on the fabric as a template! I need to do that next time. Thank you!
Anytime!
Concerning the leather that covers the hole in the middle, does it matter which direction the opening is facing? Great job on your bellows.
I don’t believe it matters, but good question.
Hey great video! I have a question: for your air intake, you glued on three sides. In other videos, I have seen people glue on just one side and maybe add weight to the flap. I am going to be making some really, really big bellows in the future... what do you suggest? Did the leather get enough contact with the hole with it glued on three sides? Also, thanks for the explanation... literally could not find anyone else who did this.
Thank you! I'm no expert on bellows, but this one is working just fine. The leather seems to get enough contact with the hole with it being glued on 3 sides. I didn't glue it flat, but left some slack in the middle like a flap so it could open and close. I've seen people use all kind of different materials for the valve...even a sandwich bag looking kind of stuff. ha.
I made one in high school it was lost in a fire up north in Michigan at the cabin !
Oh man, that’s sad. They’re cool simple machines
Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Great video, Bruce! Such a cool project, I didn't realize how much went into some bellows. Speaking of questions.. it seems the check valve functions by creating a parabola that allows the air to enter, how many PSI does it take to overcome the modulus of elasticity of the 8oz leather? Also, my wood stays wet too.
Ha ha ha. I have no idea about that! Maybe someone else will know. Thanks, Caleb! It was fun!
It's all good, I don't even know if those are real words, may as well be talking about a turbo encabulator. But I did really dig the music!
Ha ha! I wondered if you were speaking gibberish!
thanks! yes re the explanation of how it works.. I found an old one , trying to restore but wasn't sure of the physics :)
I never knew until I started digging into the subject. It’s a pretty neat concept.
@@BruceAUlrich I finished it up with googly eyes, and it has a great personality; so I gave it to someone with a fireplace who named it Saul Bellows.
“Unexpected intrusions of beauty. This is what life is.” -Saul Bellow
@@aerily1 ha ha...love that!
I came here to figure out how the mechanism works, thanks!
Glad it helped!
Great project and simply explained. I have a question for anyone here to answer. Is there a minimum and maximum angle the bellows should open to. I imagine that too little and it wouldn’t blow much, too large and the leather bunches up or puts too much pressure on the structure. Any thoughts please? Keen to make this.
Hey Ben...thanks for the kind words! I'm not really sure of the ideal angle for this. Mine opens up pretty wide. I would think as long as you can have enough material for it to fold in a way that doesn't hinder the action of the bellows, you could make it open as wide as you would like.
Can you please indicate what what of leather you used in this project. Either in oz's or mm thick as keen to make a set.
This was oil tanned leather that was about 6 oz thick.
Hi..I have a bellow that is completely missing the leather. Can I send it to you for a new leather? How much would the charge be?
Thanks for your interest, but this is not a service that I would be able to provide.
What stops smoke and hot air from being sucked up the pipe when you open the bellows ? Don't you need a 'valve' there too to only let air out and not in ?
I don't really know why, but it doesn't really get sucked in the pipe. It has something to do with the valve and it wants to come in the valve and out the pipe. I mean, a little comes in the pipe, but not a significant amount.
Fold the drawing with the crease pointing up, and tape it to a window to trace the other side.
why doesnt the air draw in through the nozzle/tip end as the bellows are expanded...?
It does draw in the tip a little. You have to be a little careful if there is a lot of ash, because you can suck it in if you're too close with the nozzle.
Does a Bellow make static electricity? I want to see if I can use that to dust off my keyboard in my computer instead of buying duster cans all the time!
I don’t think this type makes static electricity, so it should work!
You use the same type of method for the Bellow intake as you do a bandage for a sucking chest wound just taking down three sides
Interesting. I'm not familiar with that, but it is a simple mechanism. Thanks for letting me know!
@@BruceAUlrich you use a piece of plastic if you don't have the actual one way valve bandage. Combat lifesaver class
My brother bought an old bellows online and the valve was a piece of wood that was broken off. We pulled it out as it was floating around preventing proper function. The question we have is how do we create a new valve when the bellows is already together?
Hmmm. That’s a good question. The valve works with 3 sides being secured and one side being able to “breathe” and flap. I don’t know if you can create one and then secure it inside?
That was awesome. Mine won’t likely be as pretty, but better than lighting my hair on fire. Lol.
ha ha. Thank you! Show me what you end up with by tagging me on Instagram @Brudaddy!
oh.. it works like a reed valve, gotcha!
Yeah, it's much more simple than I originally thought it was.
This can be used to build an at home manual ventilator.
Yep...seems like the principle is the same.
I need to make a bellow or bollows?.. for my paper pulp packing production 😂 I usually just blow really hard into the back of my mold to release it! I use a 3D printer to make a mould to attach to a wet vac! Nobody really does it apart from huge companies with massive machines! As my moulds get slightly larger my lungs can't blow with enough volume and velocity!
What about blacksmith bellows?
What about them? You could probably use these for that purpose.
@@bellowsization Hmmm...not sure. So, you think the leather was too thin to actually get the flap/valve to close or ALL of the material was too thin?
Could have used some scrap cardboard or paper to trial fit and then Final Cut the leather. Papers cheaper
Great job
2: 13, Wow, look at that piece of leather! It must have been a tough decision, buy it or a Lamborghini.
2: 17, And always remember, Sesame Street had it right...Build a model. Cardboard. Styrofoam.
It looks to be pushing a good amount of air.
Thanks for showin'.
It was about $60 so not too bad

Holy cripes on toast those are gorgeous billows! Love the gag-reel intro. Had me laughing
So glad it had you laughing! I was hesitant about posting them, but that’s encouraging. Thanks!
You mean its just as simple as a small piece of leather to make that one way valve and here my brain tried to think of how
I know! I was the same way. I kept thinking it was some super complicated thing but it is not.
Bruce A. Ulrich im totally making one
Tag me @Brudaddy on Instagram when you do!
make me one in 12th scale.
That would be crazy small. Ha ha
first I thought someone doing bellow breathing
ha ha...kind of sounded like that.
