  • Biomes are large-scale ecological communities characterized by distinct climate, vegetation, and animal life. The major biomes of the world include:
Tropical rainforest: Hot, humid climate with abundant rainfall; lush vegetation including tall trees, vines, and epiphytes; diverse animal life including primates, birds, and insects.
Temperate rainforest: Cooler, wetter climate than tropical rainforest; mixed forests of coniferous and broadleaf trees; diverse animal life including deer, bears, and salmon.
Temperate grassland: Semi-arid climate with seasonal rainfall; grasslands dominated by grasses and wildflowers; diverse animal life including bison, pronghorn, and prairie dogs.
Tundra: Cold, dry climate with long winters and short summers; treeless plains dominated by mosses, lichens, and dwarf shrubs; animal life including caribou, polar bears, and snowy owls.
Desert: Hot, dry climate with little rainfall; sparse vegetation including cacti, succulents, and thorny shrubs; animal life including snakes, lizards, and scorpions.
Aquatic: Biomes found in salt or fresh water.
