I really love my curly hair and I think it looks good. However every single time I straighten my hair I get so many compliments like 'you look so good' 'wow you look presentable for once' 'oh you should brush your hair more often it looks good straight' and I cant help that it lowkey makes me feel like there is something wrong with my hair in everyone else's eyes...

I’m happy to see women are starting to embrace their curls. I’m 44 years old and have always loved and embraced my curly hair. Even through the eighties when everyone was teasing and crimping their hair, I always wore it natural. I would have to create my own hair products at the time because the choices we have today didn’t exist. It’s a breath of fresh air after years of flat irons and manipulation of ones natural hair texture. I’m glad to say I was truly ahead of my time.

42 year old here. Did we really have a choice?
There were no straightening irons on the market that got above 2 degrees then.
I had a straightener with interchangeable crimping and wave plates. I used those from time to time and tried the straightener twice. No! It didn’t do anything but get the top layer somewhat straighter but you could still feel huge waves.
We grew up in a time when curly hair was all the rage. I had curly hair when I was born, it went straight and waves & curls started coming back during puberty. I didn’t know it because I was spending 5 hours in the chair at the salon getting body waves or spiral perms (that took 3 boxes of perm solution to achieve). I started getting perms at 12 and I was 15 when I decided to splurge and go to an Aveda salon. I told the stylist that my last body wave was still hanging on for dear life and he said sweetie, that’s natural curl. I was 100% in love with it and rarely straightened my hair (but I did get one or 2 more spiral perms before I gave up the ghost). I always liked doing roller sets if I wanted my hair to be a bit straighter for a particular style but I did damage trying to get my curl back.
I still color or highlight because I have several different colors in my hair. I was born with a head full of jet black hair that turned brown, red, strawberry blonde and then a light golden blonde with a strawberry tint. As I went through puberty the sides of my hair went white blonde, the bottom layer started turning a dark brown, the top is a dirty blonde and it all has a strawberry tint very noticeable in the sun. I try to keep whatever I do somewhat close to the natural colors and I prefer highlights and low lights because I will go a year between getting it done. I’m lazy like that. I don’t want anything that requires constant upkeep.

Baptized by Fire It is great that picks and wide tooth combs were the instruments of choice when we were growing up. By the time my waves and curls started coming back I was well versed in using them and never brushing dry hair. I’ve tried to keep one good paddle brush on hand for the last 25 years that I use on the rare occasions that I do a different style. I can’t even remember the last time I used a standard hair brush. Unfortunately most of the stylists where I live try to come at you with a rat tailed comb.

Love your curls! I think every curly girl goes through a period where they straighten their hair all the time. We always want what we don't have, right? I remember straightening my hair every day in high school! Then when I went to college, it was like "I don't have time for this!" Now I rarely straighten it & I stopped coloring it years ago. It's pretty much all natural now - wash, curl cream, & air dry :)

This makes me so excited! I'm in the shoes you were in a few years ago when you decided to just embrace your curl (and then crossed your fingers that it came back the way it was)! My hair used to look just like yours does now. Except I was using horrible products so it was always crunchy or frizzy, never really in between. Then I started straightening as much as I could and it got to the point where it just wouldn't really curl anymore! I have been almost in tears because I miss my curls!! Like you said... it's just a part of me! I've spent all weekend doing research on Deva curl products and routines and already today, my hair is curling more than it has in months so I'm excited. Thanks for all of your curly girl videos! Truly appreciated!!!

I just stopped straightening my hair and trying to tame my hair with heat and these videos are SO helpful. Wildly enough I liked my curls but had no idea how to deal with them so I would actually straighten my hair to kill frizz and then double down on the heat by using a curling wand to get presentable curls.
Super excited to get started on this curl journey :D

So grateful and thankful for you sharing your curly hair story with us all. I'm currently outgrowing my keratin treatment (my natural texture is probably to my ears currently). Hopefully I'll have my natural texture back by June/July of 2018. I think it is so important for us curly haired girls to be informed on what products to use and what haircuts work for us. I live in Australia, so we do not have access to DivaCurl products sadly, and our curl products are very limited here. It is still very much of a trend here to wear your hair dead straight, and sadly I fell into that trap for the last 2-3 years. Can't wait to start reconstructing my curls, and becoming for informed on what I should be doing and learning how to love my crazy italian curls.

I'm white Puerto Rican and my mother has African American ancestry. I remember that when I was little I had half curly half straight hair, it was like a soft curly. All my life I flat iron my hair because I didn't understand how to properly manage it, so when I moved to the US I meet a girl from Haiti and she told me that my hair was Afro curly and that I should manage it with African hair products and not make it straight cause I was damaging it, After few years I decided to do what she said and today my hair is beautiful curly. I regret not knowing my type of hair and not embracing my mother's roots. 😢

Me too also always had thick frizzy messy hair whether it was curly or straight. I think it has a lot of do with where you live. The humidity. If the humidity is high then you are going to suffer with a lot of frizzy hair. I really wish that I didn't have to straighten or relax my curly hair. Or what you would call it, "Type 2c/3a hair." I have a girlfriend from high school that also had very long thick frizzy naturally curly hair, and I've learned that we have the same hair type! And, the year after we met she had gotten her thick curly frizzy hair straightened or relaxed! I was in total shock! But she looked a lot prettier with it then she did with it curly. Don't get me wrong. She's also beautiful with her curly as well but she just looks so much better with straight hair rather than her curly hair, and when she got it straightened she still kept it very long! It was hip length close to tailbone length. When it was curly it was close also her tailbone as well! I honestly think that if she had kept all of her hair when she got it straightened it would have reached to classic length.

My hair is exactly the same. It started out straight/wavy when I was a kid and slowly got curlier. Unfortunately I went through a phase where I dyed my hair and straightened it all the time. On top of that, I used to work as a swim teacher and a life guard, so I spent 25 hours a week essentially soaking my hair in chlorine. My hair is so damaged that it basically doesn't curl the same anymore, and now it has a half wavy/half curly texture. I'm slowly working on growing it out but it's such a pain.

My hair has been through hell and back and I’m literally only 15. I had beautiful Shirley temple curls when I was younger and in middle school I started wrecking my hair. Literally everyone had straight hair at my middle school and I though it looked so good compared to my messy unkept looking curls so I straightened it everyday from the 7th-8th grades, and dyed it 3 times in the 7th grade. But during the summer my boyfriend, before we were dating, encouraged me to wear it natural so I began letting it do its own thing and get a little better although it was still a mess but this basketball cheer season I started straightening it and curling it for games and decided it was easier to style it than leave it natural. My hair is literally ruined and Im having such a hard time with it and I’m so jealous of everyone at my school with beautiful curls. But your videos are helping me realize I’m not the only one and that I have all the time in the world to recover my curls and my curl pattern, thank you for helping me.

Omg girl I can relate. I flat ironed it every single day for 2 years straight until my hair was literally (not even exaggerating) turning white from all the split ends and broken hair reflecting. So of course, like you, I did keratin which didn't do anything except make my hair a tiny bit softer. So I just put the heat down for a year and now I blow-dry it every few weeks only and I do have a balayage but my hair is very healthy and curly. I love it now idk why I did the flat iron to myself. Plus I have like a 7 head so...the flat hair look wasn't working hahahaha

I think you are my favourite "curly hair youtuber". When I put mousse, my curls look like yours, they build locks. When I put no mousse, they sometimes look like a 2B/2C and I have dry hair. I use products with silicone and sulfates in it, but I have already done an order of shea moisture shampoo and conditioner and it comes next week. Moreover I bought 2/3 months ago "Lush" products, thinking that they were sulfate free, but I was wrong. But good about my hair, is that I rarely use heat, I straighten my hair once a year, I almost never blow-dry it and I've never dyed it. Also, your hair is not greasy at all, looks perfect to me.

I'm glad you embraced it, you have great hair😊 I'm a year and a half into regrowing my hair after heat/dye damage. the push for me was after daily straightening since 5th grade and my hair never grew back to how long it was before I started.. and my hair wasn't even that long before anyway.. but I went to the salon and told her I didn't have much hair to lose seeing how it took me years of not really trying, to get to my upper back. so I told her a max of an 2 inches off my hair to layer it (it was way too thick to be that short)...and what did she do??? cut it and thined it before straightening it, and ended up with my hair barely over my shoulders and thin as fuck. I was sooo disappointed, but that was a year ago, and the last time I got my hair cut, I haven't dyed or straighten it, and I've had lots of oil treatments and vitamins I can gladly say my hair has grown at least 4 inches and is ALMOST as long as yours 😊

Its amazing isn't it. As hair care and styling is so straight-haired/euro-centric those of us with tighter waves and curls are made to feel that curly hair is inappropriate by other people (even family members and friends), the media, magazines etc, so we gravitated towards the straight styles and even when we wore it natural we cared for it as straight hair because we didn't know better. Once I learned how curly hair has different needs and started to cater to those I saw a revolution in my curls and like you felt liberated to appreciate them for what they truly are. I have always loved my curls, and never wanted straight hair, but these days I love them and embrace them in ways I never did. I was born in the 70's however, so I still feel that a blowout is necessary for myself when I have styled and formal occasions lol because in the 70's and 80' curly hair was definitely considered wild and crazy so we always set it in rollers. Some things just never go away :-)

My hair looks like yours in random parts. The rest is a looser wave. I've seen your hair wet and detangled and that looks like my hair, too. I can comb it wet and it looks straight, except a few bits that turn (particularly around my face.) I have been doing a modified curly girl method for 2+ years now. The first thing I did was drop shampoo. I wasn't too picky about what conditioner I used, though. I just made sure to thin it out and use globs of it to detangle in the shower, plus massaging some in my scalp to cleanse. I was still wearing it in a perma-bun/ponytail though, and even flat ironing at times. I have stopped using heat now and for the last 6 months I have been letting it air dry down and wearing it down (this is so not something I have been able to do since I was a little kid unless it was straightened or curled---my hair is between those states and I was bullied growing up because of it. Was told it looks dirty and messy). And for the last maybe month I have been using Shea Moisture conditioner for my co-washes (which IS CG approved) and I did squish to condish recently and suddenly I am noticing even more hairs that are either curly or more obviously wavy, rather than looser waves. My side burns coil now, I have baby hairs at the nap of my neck that coil, and I have 3-4 spiral curls that appear towards the under backside of my hair on wash days. My hair is also becoming more manipulatable. I can wet a piece that has straightened out on day 2, 3, 4, etc and encourage it to coil with my finger and water only. Is it your opinion my hair is in a transition still, or just merely that I have mixed textured hair and that's all? I want to get layers to see if the hair in the upper back will behave a bit more.

This is so similar to my story. When I was little my hair was straight with a wave and once puberty hit, that's when my curls started coming in. I didn't know why it was doing it so I kept straightening it and now I regret it. I'm still on the path to helping it get better.

I’m in the middle of my curly hair journey, and it’s going pretty well for me. I straightened my hair for about half a year until I decided to stop, because I noticed that it started getting really damaged. I stopped straightening my hair about a year ago, and I have only straightened it occasionally three times from then, and I think that’s actually pretty good. Over the 6 months, my hair actually hasn’t gotten TOO damaged, but it’s not completely healthy. I have done a keratin treatment almost 2 years ago, and I’m not even gonna bother going into detail about how much I regret it, and why I regret it. It’s honestly the worst thing ever!! I regret sooo much. I used to have veryyy thick natural curly hair and the keratin thinned it out. Half of my hair fell out, and now my hair is very thin. I started doing coconut and castor oil treatments, and I’ve noticed that new hairs are starting to grow on my scalp. I also stopped putting any products with silicone or solvated in it? Specifically moose. Ever since I’ve stopped adding these products, I’ve noticed that my keratin damaged hair is starting to get a bit more curls than it has before. I only stopped putting moose in my hair about two months ago, and it’s already helping!
