That was undeniably the simplest, the most to-the-point and the best tutorial that any beginner can receive on these essential tasks. THANK YOU for not running down your resume, for not hoisting praise upon yourself regarding all your experience, for not talking to the audience like they were a bunch of engineers. Most RUclipsrs are poor teachers and spend 75% of the time explaining the science behind something as simple as changing a flat and leave out critical information like making sure the tire is clear of anything that can hurt your new tube. You did an excellent job. You can't see me right now Katie, but I'm applauding you from New York! 👏

I am 61 yrs old. And believe it or not, because of you, i am now going to get into cycling. I'm only 5'3, so i hope i can find a nice endurance bike for myself. At this age, the main thing is to keep moving, so you have inspired me to do just that. I'm certainly not interested in racing or keeping up with the pack. I'm more of a loner, so i would prefer, long leisure rides by myself, sought of like bicycling meditation. So, let me take this opportunity to thank you so much for the inspiration, and your humorous and optimistic outlook on life. Wishing you the very best, health and happiness!!!

I've found that after putting the tube back into the tyre, a little bit of air into the tube prevents it pinching as you get the tyre onto the rim fully before fully inflating the tyre.

The one defining feature that makes these videos really shine, beside their being--of course--well-filmed and helpful--is your continued demystifying of what goes into having a good time on a bike. I watch a lot--maybe too many--cycling videos, and like many (I presume) I suffer through some braggadocio and bravado and implicit elitism and, I mean, you're an accomplished cyclist but you don't come off as needing to prove anything. It's relaxing and makes the helpful videos that much more appealing.
Thanks for the tips! I didn't even think of taking my chain-breaking tool on rides (my multitool doesn't have one...I don't think?), but that makes total sense (and I take speed links anyway).
    Cheerio!

Great series Katie!! Would be helpful to a lot of new riders to show the rear tire - how to remove it and put it back on as most don’t understand or know how to move the rear derailleur to get the tire back on or what chain ring in the front and what gear on the cassette they should be in .

Ya know what, My daughter asked if she could come out with me on the bike, she's not been able to go to the gym because all closed due to the Covid 19 virus. She used her husband's bike, anyway she loved it, I said if you really want to get into road bike cycling I'll treat you to a road bike. She got a bike and I passed your site on to her telling her you discussed all things cycling. But this last vid you've done, doing a puncture, chain repair, sorting your gears out will be really helpful to her..and showing a female can do all these with ease. Cheers.

I met a nice couple at a roadside stop once and we had a nice chat.
Later 5 miles down the road, I stopped to fix a flat when they came driving up very worried that I might need rescue.
Thanking them, I said 'No, it's all just par for the course'.
I'll ask and appreciate motorist or other riders who pause to see if you are okay.

I've been a bit out of riding for a while now.. I give each new tube a dusting of talcum powder.. Then a shot inside the (unmounted) tire, rolling the tire slowly in my hands to let the dash of powder flow around the inside of the tire.. This adds a bit of anti-friction, which helps taking the tire on & off.. As a bonus, when you get a puncture, most times there is a tail-tale of white dust to mark the spot!

  • @harrymurphey2634
    @harrymurphey2634 4 года назад

... I have learned the hard way if you have tubeless tires ... you need to carry a "valve removal" tool ... the valve will clog up at low pressures ... and 3-5 lbs will prevent you from removing the tire from the rim (I lashed/cut my tire 1/2-3/4 " long It tried to seal but I was (5)m into a starting a "metric" ... "SAG" picked me up) ... Great Video ... most riders do not think about a broken chain ... my multi-tool has a chain press tool and I do carry "Quick-links" !!!
Every rider needs to volunteer for "SAG" ... you learn so much ... and you need to "payback" the "SAG" for your fellow riders ... and you ...

Little tip: mark the tyre & tube (with chalk) at the valve, when you find the hole in the tube, reference it back to the tyre using the chalk mark to easily find the thorn or whatever caused the puncture (it'll still most likely be in the tyre) and dig or pull it out.

Sorry last comment, if you continue this series (which I hope you do), could you do a video on how to find people to ride with. Being a beginner its hard to find a community that isn't far more advanced in distance they ride, length they ride, and all their intensely nice bikes. Its hard to find a beginner community that is on your level or closer to it. All the best!

If you're in the UK try letsride.co.uk social and/or guided rides. Various length rides, all sorts of bikes, different days, usually include a cafe stop. A beginner might want to avoid the rides run by the bike clubs until you're less of a beginner. Rides start again 4 July.

Just a little tip don't forget the small retaining ring holding the valve on the rim, when I was young could not get a tube out, so used a hammer, bent the valve, did not undo or see the retaining ring. My father buried my bike under 30 ton of stone in the back garden to teach me a lesson. I also pump up tube to test before fitting wheel on bike, and deflate the tyre so I do not have to adjust the brakes, then pump up when wheel back on. Did the Holme Moss Loop today, thoroughly enjoyed, thanks to your video gave me encouragement to try, cheers Katie.

Good vlog.... one little tip.... if you squeeze both tyre beads into the centre / "V" of the rim and work the tyre towards you ... you can actually get a few millimeters extra slack to get the tyre off or onto the rim...
Also should you lose a link and your chain is too short you can set the stop screw on your rear deraileur to not go onto the largest cog on cassette.... you will lose the easiest gear but it will get you home 👍

    Hi Katie,
    Great Video!
    Thanks a lot!
Just 2 additional comments when it comes to changing a flat tyre:
    1. Always put the Brand Name of your tyre at the Level of your valve, so it is much easier to find the valve quickly.
    2. Always slightly inflate the New inner Tube and knead it before inserting. Makes life much easier.

  • @veriest1
    @veriest1 3 года назад

On changing tires, it can help to put some air in the offending tube to find the puncture before taking the tire all the way off. Then, using the valve and valve hole as a guide search the area where the tube was punctured immediately.
Secondly, the rim has a little low spot, or channel, in the middle where the tube sort or lays. Tucking the bead into it opposite of where you're working will help get the tire on easier. It's probably not really necessary with bicycle tires but I do it any way and it is a big help on motorcycle tires.
Lastly, always be gentle with it. If you're struggling excessively there's something wrong with your technique. But it can be hard to know how much is excessive without experience. Regardless, taking ones time will prevent puncturing the tube with the tire lever(s).

This is good stuff. A good suggestion to add would be practice at home. Have a mental picture of how your chain threads around the derailleur (love spell check), try out that chain-breaker on an old chain, and tweak the shift when you start to get misses right away. On some clincher tires, I have to use tools to make the final pass with a remount on the tire. I always carry a two finger piece of scrub pad on the inside of tire to catch the wire wickers and thorns without impaling my fingers. Credit cards work too.

Not bad tips. A couple of things though. When I put the inner tube back into the tyre, I pop some air into it. Not a great deal, but once you pop the tyre back on the wheel, this bit of air will stop pinch flats. With the chain. When you reconnect the chain, make sure that the bike is in the small gear at the front and high gear at the back. The two smallest cogs. This means that your rear deralier will be flat and you wont have to pull the two chain halves together. One other tip. I carry an old toothpaste tube that has been top and tailed, a few zip ties and a stout needle and thread. If you have a tyre wall go, place the bit of toothpaste tube inside your tyre, covering the hole. Sew it in place so that the two halves around the split are pulled together, just like a doctor would do. Pop your partially inflated tube in and fit the tyre to the bike. Use cable tie or electrical tape to secure the tye to the rim by wrapping over the repair several times. This will get you home.

A little tip I've learned from experience! When you're using the race rocket pump and screw the hose of the pump onto the valve make sure you tighten the small nut on the valve body on any new inner tubes first. I've had this happen a couple of times when I've pumped the tyre up but when I unscrewed the hose the valve also unscrewed and let all the air out! They're a bugger do screw back up! Not all tubes have nuts on but Continental definitely do. Either nip the nut up with pliers or use the attachment on the race rocket pump which fits the nut. It's the grey attachment on the end of the pump.

I wondered what you meant so just had a look at my pump... who knew, it has a presta valve core tool in the end, it's in the back of the grey cap just like you said!! I always wondered what the 2 'nail nicks' were on that (to pry it off with your nails of course!) Well you've helped at least one other rider with your comment, thanks Anthony!

Katie - great mini-series - loving the outtakes - how about a behind the scenes series on how you plan, film, and edit etc. - I can't remember if you have done any videos in the past on this topic, even though I have watched most of them and obviously I'm too idle to search through the list :-)

If you pump up the old tube and find the hole you can line up with the tyre to get the position of the puncture

Thanks for the videos Katie, from someone whom is starting out on this new era of my life, I have been watching your videos in hope to iron out a few bad habits. Thanks again, hopefully you can shed some light on the difference between the 3d 15d 20d chamois, as I have heard the thickness Is dependent on the saddle used.... Never mind keep up with the enlightenment.

Katie, how to fix flat in the rear wheel?! Because we will have to remove the gears right? Try to cover it in a future video maybe 😉 thanks for your informative videos!

No, you remove the back wheel and the gears (cassette) are attached

Another great video! The rolling of the tyre to get it back on is really helpful. Cheers Katie!

Crackin’ video Glad you showed outtakes....never believed you rolled the tyre back on 😂 It would have been even better if you had done the rear wheel as that is the one that worries most getting it out and back in correctly 👍

Practice at home. Chain on smallest sprocket, open brake with the small catch on the brake, unfasten axle. The wheel should pull out
